Appendix 1 ACM National Scholarships
ACM - Pam Hayes and Margaret Peters Scholarship
(formally known as the AMSF/ Annual National Scholarship)
Background Pam Hayes and Margaret Peters established the Australian Midwifery Scholarship Foundation (AMSF) in 1989 with the profits from a successful ICM Congress in Sydney. The AMSF was administered by Trustees consisting of office bearers of the Australian College of Midwives (ACM) and one nominee from each State and Territory Branch. In 2014, the ACM changed its legal status through unification of the nine incorporated associations such that the trust deed was no longer in step with the ACM constitution and its branches. It was decided to terminate the Trust in accordance with the relevant clause of the deed and establish the Pam Hayes and Margaret Peters Scholarships in 2016. The scholarship is named in their stead to acknowledge their wisdom and vision in establishing the AMSF.
Purpose The purpose of the ACM annual national scholarship is to provide funding: • for midwives to undertake projects or research that contributes to the education
and practice of midwifery;
• for midwives to undertake projects or research that contributes to the education
and practice of midwifery with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander focus;
• to assist attendance of midwives to present their projects or research that
contributes to the education and practice of midwifery at national or international
conference in midwifery or related fields;

present at Australian midwifery conferences, or to undertake study tours to learn
about midwifery in Australia as part of a project or research in their home country
that contributes to the education and practice of midwifery.

Background The Margaret Peters Scholarship is awarded to a midwife to attend a short course, conference or other professional development activity to the value of $2000.00. The scholarship honours a woman responsible for the establishment of the College and a woman whose contribution to the world stage of midwifery is significant. Margaret Peters was born at Mirboo North, Victoria. She entered the midwifery profession in 1958, at Melbourne's Royal Women's Hospital. Margaret Mabbitt Scholarship
Background
The Margaret Mabbitt Scholarship enables a qualified midwife to undertake further studies to the value of $2000.00. The scholarship honours a woman who has contributed much to the development of midwifery during her lifetime. Margaret Mabbitt was born at Swan Hill, Victoria. After gaining registration as a nurse in 1951 she became a midwife at Royal Women's Hospital in 1956, followed by an infant welfare registration. Margaret's initial working life was spent in varied rural and metropolitan positions. However, it is for 32 years' service at the Royal Women's Hospital that she is best known.
Throughout her time Margaret has been active within her professional bodies. She has been a longstanding ACM Victorian Branch committee member and treasurer, including working towards bringing the first Southern Hemisphere ICM to Sydney in 1984. She has been active on numerous other committees such as RCNA, UNICEF, RWH history, Archive & Alumni Committee. She remains an active volunteer within the archive departments of RWH.
