College & Career Room

The Oviedo High School College/Career Room has provided a much-needed service to the students at OHS since 1985. Staffed by Dividend volunteers, the College/Career Room is located in the Guidance Office. It is open daily.

Scholarship Update

Attention all students interested in obtaining scholarships for college: Your College Room is a valuable source of information on scholarships that we hope you will utilize. Beginning in September, seniors and parents of seniors will receive a weekly Skyward blast of the Scholarship Updates. This update will include information about scholarships with approaching deadlines as an encouragement to seniors to apply. Although most scholarships target seniors, many are available to underclassmen as well. Everyone is encouraged to go to the OHS website> Guidance>Scholarship Info to access this important information. We will also place a copy of the announcement in

an orange binder in the college room and ask senior English teachers to post it on their bulletin boards. Applications for the scholarships will be on file in the College Room, and adult dividends are available on some days to assist you in your search. Please take advantage of this service that will be offered throughout the year, and see your counselor if you have questions regarding scholarships. Attention seniors planning to attend Seminole State College: The Robert E. and Jane S. Lee Scholarship will be awarded to one or more Oviedo or Hagerty High School seniors who have 3.0 GPA and a financial need. This scholarship will provide up to $2,000 per semester for the first two years of college, with a maximum amount of $8,000 awarded. Applications for this scholarship are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is May 15th. Attention seniors planning to attend FSU: The Seminole Club of Greater Orlando will award one $1000 scholarship to a deserving student whose parent or guardian is a member in good standing of the FSU Alumni, Boosters and/or Foundation. Scholarship information is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is June 1st.

Seniors interested in pursuing a career in animation are invited to apply for the Aspiring Animation Professional Scholarship Program. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded, and more information is available in the college room. Deadline to apply is June 1st. Attention Seniors: The Aspiring Business Professional scholarship worth $1,000 will be awarded to students interested in pursuing a business degree. Deadline for applications is June 1st, and more information is available in the college room.

Seniors interested in pursuing a career in fashion are invited to apply for the Aspiring Fashion Professional Scholarship Program. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded, and more information is available in the college room. Deadline to apply is June 1st. Attention seniors, the Panyha Foundation provides scholarships to student of Lao heritage who are enrolled in an accredited four year community college or university and demonstrate a financial need. Application information is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is June 15th. Attention seniors planning to attend a community college or technical school: The Horatio Alger Association Career & Technical Scholarship Program will award

scholarships to students who have a financial need. You can get information about the scholarship program in the college room, and the deadline for application is June 15th. Attention all seniors who have achievements in academics, athletics, and the arts: a new scholarship in honor of retiring superintendent Dr. Bill Vogel will be awarded to one Seminole County graduating senior. The winner of the $1,000 Bill Vogel AAA Scholarship must possess a 3.5 GPA, participation in one or more high school athletic programs, and participation in visual or performing arts. We just received the applications, and the April 19th deadline is coming up right away. Visit the college room to pick up your application.

Attention seniors, if you are interested in a career in air traffic control or aviation, the Air Traffic Control Association offers several scholarship opportunities for you. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is May 1st. Seniors, the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Foundation offers a wide range of scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000 to students interested in the hospitality industry. Criteria for selection include academics, hospitality work experience, extracurricular activities, financial need, honors, and personal attributes. Information about the scholarships is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is May 1st.

Attention seniors, the Rotary Club of Oviedo is offering a four year scholarship of $1,000 per year to a deserving Oviedo resident. Applications are available in the college room and must be submitted by the April 20th deadline. Seniors interested in pursuing a career in the culinary arts are invited to apply for scholarships through the James Beard Foundation. Information about applying for these scholarships, which vary in amount based upon the school you attend, is available in the college room. Deadline to apply is May 15th. Seniors the Fairwinds Credit Union is sponsoring an essay contest and will award two $1,000 scholarships. To enter, you must be a member of Fairwinds Credit Union. Applications and information about the essay topic are available in the college room. Deadline to apply is April 14th.

Seniors, the Children of Divorce Scholarship will be awarded by the Ayo and Iken PLC law firm. The scholarships, valued at $1000 will be awarded to two students

who have experienced divorce in their families. Visit the college room for information on applying, and the deadline is May 1st. Attention senior girls interested in the fields of engineering and computer science: The Society of Women Engineers provides scholarships to women students pursuing degrees in these majors. GPA of 3.5 is required. More information about the scholarship is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is May 1st. Attention students interested in studying design and arts disciplines in college: Worldstudio Foundation, in conjuction with AIG, the professional association for design, provides scholarships to minority and economically disadvantaged students in the amount of $2000-$3000. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is May 1st.

Attention seniors interested in pursuing a career in document management and graphic communication. The EDSF Scholarship Program will award several scholarships on the basis of scholastic achievement, application essay, participation in school activities, community service, and recommendations. Seniors with a disability are invited to apply for a scholarship through the Johnson Scholarship Foundation. You may obtain more information about applying for this scholarship in the college room. The deadline to apply is May 1st.

Attention senior girls planning to major in a field directly related to the construction industry. The National Association of Women in Construction will award scholarships of $1000 based upon GPA, extracurricular activities, and financial need. Visit the college room to get an application, and the deadline to apply is May 5th.

Attention seniors, the Florida State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will award more than 25 scholarships to students for their outstanding academic achievements. Applications for the scholarships are in the college room, and the deadline to apply is May 15th.

Seniors, Source Supply is offering a $1,000 scholarship to the winner ofan essay contest about the importance of keeping the environment clean. Essay entries must

be emailed by May 31st, and you can get more information about the contest in the college room. Attention seniors, the CFE Federal Credit Union will be awarding a total of six scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each to selected eligible members or dependents of members of the credit union. Winners will be selected by lottery. The deadline for the application is May 31st, and applications are available in the college room. Seniors, the American Road and Transportation Builders Association will award a scholarship of up to $5,000 to assist the children of highway construction workers killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. Attention seniors, Give Kids A Chance is offering scholarship grants in the amount of $1,000 to high school seniors who have a documented financial need and at least a 2.5 grade point average. Seniors, the Abbott and Fenner Business Consultants will again offer scholarships of up to $1,000 to winners of an essay contest. Senior athletes, the BigSun Organization will award a $500 scholarship to a deserving student who will be attending a postsecondary institution and is currently involved in some sport at that institution or in the community. Seniors, the Central Florida Chapter of the International Test and Evaluation Association will award a scholarship of at least $1,000 to a student who plans to pursue a degree in any of the physical sciences, mathematics, computer science, or engineering fields. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 10th.

Seniors, The Central Florida STEM Education Council will award scholarships to students who plan to pursue a degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics field. Applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.0, extracurricular activities, and community service. Information about the STEM scholarship is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 25th.

Attention seniors: The Central Florida Chapter Women in Defense is offering a $1000 award to seniors interested in a career in national security, defense, or a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) related field. Seniors, the Kiwanis Club of Sanford is sponsoring an essay contest with an award of $1,000 to the writer of the winning essay. The essay is on the topic of volunteer services and the local community and must be received by the Kiwanis Club by the March 28th deadline.

All students grades 9-12 are invited to compete for a $2,500 scholarship in the Optimist International Oratorical Contest. Students are required to prepare an original speech of about four minutes based on an assigned topic. Attention senior girls: The PEO Chapter BQ, Florida is offering scholarships to female students with an unweighted GPA of 3.0 to 3.5. Financial need is considered but it is not the primary consideration for selection. More information is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is April 10th. Attention seniors planning to major in criminal justice or ROTC: the family of OHS 2013 graduate Matthew Caselli will award $500 to an Oviedo High senior who has a 3.0 and has demonstrated leadership in school or community activities. Seniors, the Florida Council of the Blind is awarding scholarships to students who are legally blind. Applications for the scholarships are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is April 15th.

Attention all seniors, the Col. George C. Morton Memorial Scholarship is awarded in memory of those personnel who served in a Special Operations Unit during the Vietnam War and those who were prisoners of war or missing in action in Southeast Asia. Applications for the scholarship are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is April 15th.

Attention seniors: The Pearlie’s Lift Up Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student who has struggled personally or academically in school, given back through service to his or her community, and wants a second chance in furthering his or her education. Applications are in the college room, and the deadline to apply is April 15th.

Attention students interested in a career in one of the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, or math): the Altamonte Springs Science Incubator, in partnership with Dr. Ashley Ansara, has establish a scholarship of $1,500 to provide outstanding Seminole County students the ability to explore and develop careers in STEM. Attention all senior girls: The Suburban Republican Women’s Club will award a scholarship of at least $500 to a female who has shown leadership in school or extracurricular activities. Applications for the scholarship are in the college room and must be mailed by the May 1st deadline.

The Coil Law High School Senior Scholarship valued at $500 will be awarded based upon your academic history and an essay on the assigned topic. Deadline for submission of the application is May 31st, and you can obtain more information in the college room.

Attention juniors and seniors: The Kim Coburn Scholarship of $500 will be awarded to an Oviedo High School junior or senior who has improved their grade point average from the fall 1014 semester to the spring 2015 semester or maintained a 4.0 or higher GPA for the entire year. Information is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is June 1st. Attention seniors, the Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools will award several scholarships to graduating seniors of Seminole County high schools. Among the scholarships that will be awarded to Oviedo High School students are the Colonel Joseph F. Nardo Scholarship and the Catherine “Toots” Nardo Scholarship. There is only one application you must complete to apply for these awards, and that application is available in the college room. The deadline to apply is March 31st. Scholarships will be awarded at Senior Awards Night, so come to the college room for information on applying for these Foundation scholarships. Are you a high school senior who loves Oviedo? Seniors, the Robert Locke Scholarship was established in memory of the 2006 Oviedo High graduate to recognize and assist an OHS senior planning to major in theatre at the college level. The Central Florida Gator Club, an affiliate of the University of Florida Alumni Association, is pleased to announce six new scholarships. Attention seniors whose parent is a member of the Non Commissioned Officers Association. You are invited to apply for a $900 per year scholarship to be awarded by the NCOA. The American Legion Auxiliary will award several scholarships to students who qualify in a variety of categories including children of veterans who served in the Armed Forces or members of the American Legion or Auxiliary. Seniors, the Scholarship for Military Children was created to recognize military families’ contributions to the readiness of U.S. armed forces and the commissary’s role in the military community. At least one $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student at each commissary. Attention seniors who excel in science: the Project Weather Scholarship is for $1000 and will be awarded to nine central Florida seniors by a meteorologist on News 13. Seniors, the Sanford Seminole Art Association (SSAA) will award two $500 scholarships to seniors from Seminole County Public Schools. Seniors, the Phil Cloninger Memorial Scholarship was established by the Oviedo/Winter Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce to be awarded to a deserving local high school senior. Attention seniors: The Central Florida Hotel and Lodging Association is offering a full-ride scholarship to a student planning to pursue a degree at the UCF Rosen College of Hospitality. Seniors who have been identified as being legally blind are eligible for a scholarship awarded by the Visual Aid Volunteers of Florida, Inc. Applications for the scholarship are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 30th.

Attention all students: The Americanism Essay Contest is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and is open to all high school students. Awards range from $2000-$10,000 for each grade level based upon your essay. Entries must be submitted by March 10th, and details are available in the college room. Seniors, the Lake Mary Heathrow Festival of the Arts Scholarship awards $500 to artistically talented Seminole County seniors. Applications are available in the college room and must be submitted by March 30th. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War awards two $2,500 scholarships annually to deserving seniors. To apply, male students must be a current member of the organization and female applicants must be the daughter or granddaughter of a current member and a member of an affiliated organization. If you qualify for

this scholarship, you can pick up an application in the college room. The deadline to apply is March 31st. Attention all students grades 9-12: You are invited to participate in an art contest in which your artwork expresses patriotism. The contest is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, and awards ranges from $500 to $10,000. Find out more about the contest in the college room. Deadline to submit your artwork is March 31st. Seniors, the Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor her legacy as an advocate for youth and supporter of community service. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA, demonstrate leadership in community service or other extracurricular activities, and have a combined family income of less than $100,000. Applications for the scholarship are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 31st.

Seniors, the Omega Psi Phi fraternity Friendship Foundation will award scholarships of $500 to seniors in Orange and Seminole counties based upon GPA, community service and leadership. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 31st. Seniors, the Kiwanis Club of Oviedo/Winter Springs will award a scholarship to a local high school student who has at least a 3.0 grade point average. Applications for the Kiwanis scholarship are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is April 6th.

Seniors, the Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund will award One Full-ride scholarship valued at $48,000 to the Rollins College Evening Emerging Leaders program. Visit the college room for more information and submit your application by the April 1st deadline.

Attention seniors, University Behavioral Center will award a $500 scholarship to a senior who has dealt with mental health challenges either personally or with someone close to them, whether it be a friend or family member. Applications are available in the college room, and the winner will be chosen on the basis of an essay about your experience. Deadline to apply is April 3rd. Seniors, the Kobrin Family Scholarship is a one-time scholarship of $2,000 awarded to a student who will attend UCF. Financial need, GPA, and test scores

are considered, and preference is given to students who are of the Jewish faith. Applications are available in the college room and must be submitted by April 3rd.

Seniors, the American Nuclear Society will award four $1,000 scholarships to students planning to pursue a degree in nuclear engineering. Applications are on file in the college room. Completed applications must be received by the American Nuclear Society by the April 1st deadline. Attention female African-American seniors: the Sanford Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is offering scholarships to deserving students committed to pursuing a higher education. Visit the college room to obtain your application. Deadline to apply is March 10th. Seniors, the Rotary Club of Winter Springs Charitable Foundation will award the “Service Above Self” scholarship to a deserving senior. Applications are available in the college room and must be postmarked by the March 11th deadline. Seniors, the Seminole County Historical Society will award the Carolyn Bistline History Scholarship to a Seminole County senior planning to pursue an undergraduate degree with a concentration in history. The scholarship is valued at $500, and the application is available in the college room. Deadline to apply is March 15th.

Attention seniors: Collins Dental is offering a $500 scholarship to an Oviedo High School senior who is interested in pursuing a career in the dental or medical field. Applicants must have at least a 3.5 average and must complete an application and essay. Information is available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 20th.

Attention all students, you are invited to enter an essay contest sponsored by the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA). Awards include a $2,500 scholarship, an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., and an all-expense paid educational voyage courtesy of Semester at Sea. Attention seniors: if you are the child of an active duty, retired, or deceased Air Force member, you are encouraged to apply for the Air Force Aid Society General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant. The American Legion Auxiliary Children of Warriors National President’s Scholarship valued at $5000 will be awarded to fifteen students who are children and grandchildren of veterans who served in the Armed Forces while our nation was at war. Applications are available in the college room, and the deadline to apply is March 1st. Attention seniors, you are encouraged to apply for the Oviedo High School PTSA Scholarship. Scholarships will be awarded on Senior Awards Night to deserving members of the OHS graduating class who are student members of PTSA, have a 2.5 or higher unweighted GPA, and have proof of acceptance to a college or vocational school. You may pick up an application for the scholarship in the college room. Deadline to apply is March 31st.

Seniors, a $1000 scholarship will be awarded to an OHS senior by the Oviedo High School Reunion Graduating Classes of 1953-1963 who want to “give back” to current students. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA and complete an application which is available in the college room. Deadline to apply is March 31st.

Attention seniors: the Oviedo Historical Society will again award a $500 scholarship to an Oviedo High School student with a special interest in history. Interested students should complete the application which is available in the college room. Deadline to apply is March 31st.

The Central Florida Hotel and Lodging Association will award a scholarship of $1,000 per year for four years to a student with a 3.0 GPA and a financial need.
