The UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship Program

The UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship Program aims to strengthen our community by investing in exceptional young people who use their skills and commitment to lead positive change in our community, state and nation.

Established in 2004, the UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship Program is one of Australia’s premier scholarship programs. The scholarship is a joint initiative between the Fogarty Foundation and The University of Western Australia, to award WA’s brightest and most committed students, scholarships for the entirety of their university degree.

The program connects Scholars with local and international leaders, to provide Scholars and Alumni leadership opportunities, supported through comprehensive academic scholarships, academic mentoring, career and personal enrichment engagements and, paramount to the program, a strong network of likeminded young leaders.

Ten new scholarships are awarded each year to our State’s highest achieving students. Scholars are selected based on academic excellence and outstanding achievements in leadership, community involvement, sports, the arts and enterprising initiatives. UWA Fogarty Undergraduate Scholars who choose to continue their postgraduate study at UWA are fully supported in their further studies.

A key element of the scholarships is a tailored Leadership and Enterprise Program for the Scholars’ entire university degree. This program focuses on developing transformative leadership skills in each of the Scholars and includes support for Scholars’ initiatives, and access to the Scholars’ Enterprise Investment Program.

In 2021, we have 60 Scholars and 106 Alumni who are studying, working and making a contribution in WA and around the world.

UWA Fogarty Scholars participate in a tailored Leadership and

Enterprise Program that provides Scholars and Alumni with an

excellent opportunity to learn from today’s leaders.

The Leadership and Enterprise Program expands Scholars’ horizons

by initiating opportunities for the Scholars to learn from, and have

access to, a network of leaders, gain insight into how our community

works and how they can make a positive contribution now and in the

future.

From 2020, the Leadership and Enterprise Program includes a focus

on enterprise, bringing Scholars a range of opportunities to challenge

their thinking and to develop leadership, entrepreneurial and life

skills.

The UWA Fogarty Scholars study across a range of disciplines and as

they graduate they become members of the UWA Fogarty Scholars’

Alumni. The Alumni network of talented and motivated young people

working in a variety of professions, provides ongoing support as they

evolve in their individual roles within the community.

Tom finished his studies for the Juris Doctor in 2018. He previously completed a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Economics and Political Science & International Relations.

During his undergraduate degree, Tom worked with Ignite Mentoring as General Manager. He visited the Copenhagen Business School on exchange and studied the European Union's foreign policy.

Whilst at Law School, Tom worked as a tutor for the unit Evolution of Human Rights. He visited the University of Oslo on exchange, specialising in international human rights law

Upon graduating, Tom worked for Volunteering WA as the Corporate Volunteering Coordinator. He currently works for Cullen Macleod Lawyers as a Law Graduate for the commercial and litigation teams.

The Jeremy Cheang Award is a special annual prize, awarded in memory of Jeremy Cheang, a former UWA Fogarty Scholar. The annual Jeremy Cheang Award of $2,000 is to recognise and award a Scholar:

Fogarty Scholars’ Association

The Fogarty Scholars’ Association (FSA) comprises all UWA Fogarty Scholars and

Alumni. The FSA facilitates the cohesion and skill development of UWA Fogarty

Scholars and Alumni in order to empower them to contribute to society.

The FSA has three key objectives:

• To create an accessible network of Scholars and current and future leaders

• To provide professional development opportunities for Scholars

• To support Scholars in their involvement in the community

The FSA run a range of events and programs each year, including a mentoring

program for Scholars and Alumni, the flagship Fogarty Futures Leadership

Conference for high school students and informal social events. The FSA also

provides the opportunity for Scholars and Alumni to develop their leadership skills

by offering support for their projects.

Being a part of the FSA is the best way to immediately become a part of the UWA

Fogarty Scholars community, meet motivated, interesting people and make the

most of the benefits the UWA Fogarty Scholars and Alumni network has to offer.

The Fogarty Foundation

The Fogarty Foundation advances social change through education.

The Foundation was founded in 2000 by Brett and Annie Fogarty to support and provide education and leadership opportunities across the spectrum of the WA community.

The Foundation identifies areas of need and supports and develops West Australian programs that deliver educational opportunities and have wide, long-term impact.

The Foundation’s current programs fall within 3 main focus areas:

• Next Generation Leaders: Empowering, extending and creating opportunities for high performing and high potential students

• Excellent Teaching for all Students: Inspiring excellence and high quality instruction in schools by investing in teachers, school leaders and school principals to ensure that all students receive a high quality education

• Future Ready Students: Catalysing innovation in education to ensure that today’s students are equipped with skills for the future

The ripple effect, depicted in the Foundation’s logo, is at the very essence of everything that the Foundation does, creating opportunities for improved outcomes with long term impact.

The UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship Program

The UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship Program aims to strengthen our community by investing in exceptional young people who use their skills and commitment to lead positive change in our community, state and nation.

Established in 2004, the UWA Fogarty Foundation Scholarship Program is one of Australia’s premier scholarship programs. The scholarship is a joint initiative between the Fogarty Foundation and The University of Western Australia, to award WA’s brightest and most committed students, scholarships for the entirety of their university degree.

The program connects Scholars with local and international leaders, to provide Scholars and Alumni leadership opportunities, supported through comprehensive academic scholarships, academic mentoring, career and personal enrichment engagements and, paramount to the program, a strong network of likeminded young leaders.

Ten new scholarships are awarded each year to our State’s highest achieving students. Scholars are selected based on academic excellence and outstanding achievements in leadership, community involvement, sports, the arts and enterprising initiatives. UWA Fogarty Undergraduate Scholars who choose to continue their postgraduate study at UWA are fully supported in their further studies.

A key element of the scholarships is a tailored Leadership and Enterprise Program for the Scholars’ entire university degree. This program focuses on developing transformative leadership skills in each of the Scholars and includes support for Scholars’ initiatives, and access to the Scholars’ Enterprise Investment Program.

In 2021, we have 60 Scholars and 106 Alumni who are studying, working and making a contribution in WA and around the world.
