It Starts With The Glass®

Schneider Optics, a U.S. subsidiary of acclaimed German lens maker SchneiderKreuznach, represents a long history of extraordinary lenses and filters for manyindustries including still photography, High Definition, television broadcasting, cinematography, and digital projection. It’s no wonder Schneider filters formotion pictures and digital cinematography are the finest in the industry.

Consistent PrecisionDiamond cut from crystal-clear, water-white optical glass, Schneider filtersare ground and polished to a precise flatness and plane-parallelism (exactparallel relationship between front and back filter surfaces). Then, to ensureperfection, this is verified by a laser interferometer. Schneider filters arethen checked with a densitometer for consistent density and tested with a spectrophotometer for proper light transmission. This ultra-high consistencyallows cinematographers to swap like filters mid-shoot with no discerniblevariation in color or effect. What’s more, the unprecedented purity, colorsaturation and repeatability of Schneider filters virtually eliminates the needfor lab color timing correction.

Ultra DurabilitySchneider filters stand up to the most rigorous demands on set or location. Many feature Schneider’s specially formulated hard anti-reflective coating toresist flaking, peeling and scratching. This proprietary coating also reduceslight loss and flare to less than 1% per surface, compared to untreatedglass that has a light loss of 4% per surface.

Schneider screw-on filters feature virtually jam-proof precision mountingrings, while unmounted Schneider laminated filters are protected againstdelamination and edge-chipping by Schneider’s unique Edge Seal, which alsoreduces edge reflection and edge flare.

Professional Sizes for Film and Digital ImagingSchneider filters are available in popular sizes including 4˝x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝(Panavision size), 5˝x5˝, 5.65˝x5.65˝, 6.6˝x6.6˝ and 138mm rounds. Screw-onfilters are available in 58, 62, 72, 77, 82, 86, 95, 102, 105, and 127mmsizes. For more information or additional sizes, visit us online.

SchneiderClassic Soft®

filters are manufacturedusing opticalglass that isdiamond cut, precision groundand polished toensure uniformityand consistency.Sandwichedbetween two

pieces of this optical glass (A) are hundredsof precision Micro-Lenslets (B). During use, image light (C) that passes through eachMicro-Lenslet is only slightly refracted (D),while light (E) passing between Micro-Lensletsis unaffected.

Classic Soft filters are tested with a laserinterferometer to ensure exact flatness andthe parallel relationship between both sides.

Application: Blend small wrinklesand blemishes, while maintainingoverall sharp focus to conceal theuse of a softening filter. Greaterstrengths (I, 2) can add a mood to the scene by causing highlightsto glow softly. Use with cine or HDcameras with 2/3˝ chip or larger.

Schneider has developed a subtleand effective softening filter thatcan be used freely without fear of compromising the high quality ofcontemporary lenses. Schneider ClassicSoft® filters are made possible bystate-of-the-art optical technology anda proprietary Schneider manufacturingtechnique. In the normal range of exposure, this filter imparts onlya closely confined, very subtleglow to highlights. If large amountsof over-exposure exist in a scene, like a blown window, Classic Softfilters add a stylish glow that keepsthe scene’s contrast under control, while adding a romantic look.

As with all Schneider opticalglass filters, Classic Soft filters aredesigned for use in front of longlenses, singly or in combination, foreven greater creative control.

Extreme ConsistencyClassic Soft filters are manufac-tured to Schneider’s renownedstandards so same strengthfilters can be switched betweenA & B cameras, or lost filterscan be replaced, with nodiscernable difference.

“Hollywood Black Magic™ Filters are nothing short of amazing. When shooting HD, you suddenly see everything. All the imper-

fections not meant for theaudience to see. Make-up freaks out. Same with setdesigners and even actors. The Hollywood Black Magicon HD can do away with all of that.It makes the imageseem more like film”Brian J. Reynolds, DP

DigiCon®

Application: For a “filmic look” when shooting with digital cameras. When infront of the lens, opticallyraises black levels whilelowering highlights, capturing a higher dynamic range.

By compensating with in-cameragamma settings, a higher dynamicrange can be recorded than thecamera alone can achieve. Theresult is more detail in highlightsand shadows with no effect onresolution and no color shift.Highlight areas remain clean andhalo-free. Use it on a 35mm cinecamera to approximate the look ofa lower contrast film stock.

Black Frost®

Application: A fine black mist flairs highlights, tones downcontrast, while retaining rich blacks.Black Frost® filters give a “filmiclook” to High Definition images.Depending on the strength, theysubtly enhance a scene withoutfear of image degradation orreduction of black saturation.

Black Frost filters enable cine-matographers to capture blackerblacks than possible with similartype filters. Shooters achieve aunique image styling that can beapplied freely, without fear of havingscenes appear heavy handed.

Thanks to proprietary Schneiderdesign & manufacturing techniques,Black Frost filters contain thousandsof MicroPore™ particles, whichintroduce precise amounts of lightdiffraction while controlling straylight and flare—like never before.

MicroPore particles control thedegree of diffusion in a predictableand repeatable manner. By eliminatingexcessive light scatter and veilingglare associated with other makes,Black Frost filters enable extraor-dinary control and convenience.

Black Frost filters can be usedin front of long lenses, alone, orcombined with other Schneider filters.

True-Pol®

PolarizingFiltersApplications: The most effectivepolarizer made for cine and electroniccameras, Schneider True-Pol® filtershave an extinction ratio of ER 374,twelve times more effective than othersuch filters! Unmatched in ability to:• Reduce glare & unwanted reflections• Saturate colors & improve contrast• Deepen blue skies• Penetrate haze

True-Pol® Linear Polarizer True-Pol filters utilize polarizing filmwhich is laminated between two piecesof Schneider’s crystal-clear, water-whiteoptical glass. The filter is protectedagainst edge-chipping and delaminationby a unique Edge Seal process, whichalso reduces edge reflections & flare.

The absolute clarity of the glasscombined with advanced polarizingmaterial make True-Pol filters particu-larly useful on demanding scenes, likeshooting through windshields in riggedvehicles. Cinematographers report thatTrue-Pol filters capture more colorsaturation, wider tonal range andgreater contrast inside the car.

Sizes: 4˝x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝ (Panavisionsize), 5˝x5˝, 5.65˝x5.65˝, 6.6˝x6.6˝and rounds in Series 9, 4.5˝, 138mm,6˝ 9.5˝, 40.5 and 48mm.

One-Stop Linear Polarizer Applications: Low light such asindoors or night requiring eliminationof glare and reflections off surfaceslike car and storefront windows.

While the standard True-Pol is 1 3/5stops, the One-Stop Linear Polarizersignificantly reduces reflections whilereducing available light by just one stop.

Sizes: 4˝x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝ (Panavisionsize), 5˝x5˝, 5.65˝x5.65˝, 6.6˝x6.6˝Special orders for rounds as wellas 40.5mm and 48mm threadedbehind-the-lens filters (with anti-reflection multi-coating)

Screw-on Polarizers forVideo Lenses The Top-Pol and Kaesemann Pol employSchneider’s brass mounting ringsto virtually eliminate jamming on thelens barrel. ENG camera operators, concerned with vignetting during wide-angles, may be interested in Schneider’sSlim-Line B+W circular polarizers.

Without True-Pol® With True-Pol®

“I love Schneider One-StopLinear Polarizers for interiors. They allow me to handle the occasional cross-lightshine on complexions without having to deal with lighting.”Francis Kenny, ASC

When one polarizing filter is turned & theother is held stationary, the density of thetwo should go from slightly gray to almostblack. The more light passing through thefilters at maximum density, the weakerthe polarizing effect.

CircularTrue-Pol®

Application: To preventviewfinder black-out on cameraswhich employ polarizing elements in the beam-splitters of the viewingsystem, like Arriflex 435 andMovieCam Compact.

Camera beam splitters send light in two directions: to an eyepieceand to a video tap. Light in acamera’s viewing system can becomepolarized, and when a standard (linear) polarizing filter is attachedto the lens, the light becomes crosspolarized. This hinders visibility andcan create total blackout of theviewing image and/or the videotap.

Circular Polarizers employ a twolayer design to prevent blackout. The first layer is made of thepolarizing substance used in allTrue-Pol® filters. Layer two is madeof a 1/4-wave retarder plate toprevent cross-polarization.

To ensure correct lens barrel placement,Schneider clearly marks the CircularTrue-Pol® filters’ outer surface.

Sizes: 4˝x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝ (Panavisionsize), 5˝x5˝, 5.65˝x5.65˝, 6.6˝x6.6˝and 138mm Round

TRUE-POL ®

Polarizers are Versatile ToolsPolarizers are commonly used tocontrol glare on water and to allowthe camera to see below the surface. They are also used to reduce glareon car bumpers and control reflectionson plate-glass windows. Polarizersare so versatile they can also performthe opposite functions. Some usepolarizers to increase or enhancereflections, simply by changing thefilter’s setting. Ideal for :• Darkening skies for dramatic impact.

While graduated neutral density filters can also be used to achieve this effect, the need to position their transition line accurately precludes their use in many applications. Polarizers do not suffer from this limitation.

• Suppressing reflections & capturingtruer color when filming actors through a windshield and from other rigged-car camera positions.

• Greatly adding to the drama and appeal of the shot when shooting food (particularly meat or liquids).

• Increasing the color saturation of any object with a glossy surface.

Applications: Eliminate the undesirable effects of IR contamination or pollution thatcan occur when photographingbright scenes with digital cinemaCMOS sensor cameras. Can be usedas an IR Reduction filters or incombination with ND, controllingexposure or depth of field undervarious lighting conditions withoutaffecting color or contrast.

IRND: True Blacks fromHD Cameras

Cinematographers have found thatmany of today’s high definitioncameras have a high sensitivityto light just beyond the visiblerange. This can be beneficial inextending the color gamut ofdigital cameras to closelyapproach that of traditional film. However, light in the IR spectrumcan also cause unwanted falsecolor shifts and prevent thecamera’s imagers from capturingtrue black tones.

To solve this problem, Schneider’snew Platinum Series IRND filterslimit the light striking thecamera’s CCD or CMOS imager tothe visible spectrum. By carefullycalculating the cutoff frequencyin nanometers, Schneider has beenable to produce a near infraredcut filter that lets users of HighDefinition cameras get the mostout of their camera gear. Thismeans the benefit of an extendedcolor gamut without the worry ofunwanted false colors. Eliminatingthe near infrared light leakagelets the camera maintain truecolor rendition in the blackswhile maintaining high MTF of its lenses and camera system.

Schneider came through for us with some of thefirst sets of their greatnew Platinum IRNDs,and all our color matchingproblems disappeared.

Lowell Peterson, ASC

“Despite improved filtrationbuilt into RED’s new MX sensor, Schneider IR filters arestill essential to consistentlyensure true blacks whenshooting in bright sunlightwith heavy ND.”

James Mathers, DP

2-in-1 Function

The Platinum IRND combines thebest attributes of Schneider’sPlatinum series IR filter and NeutralDensity (ND) filters in a singleconvenient package. Blending twoeffects into one filter makes itpossible to have less glass in frontof the lens – lowering the risk ofa dirty surface, flairs, reflectionsbetween the layers, or even theminiscule loss of clarity that mayoccur when using multiple filterssimultaneously.

Great as a standard ND

Schneider Platinum Series IRNDfilters are free of off-axis colorshift regardless of the focal length and can be stacked withoutintroducing reflections. In addition, they can be used with all currentdigital and film cameras as IRND or standard N.D.

Sizes: All standard video and cinesizes, including: 4˝x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝,5˝x5˝, 5.65˝x5.65˝, 6.6˝x6.6˝ rectangular sizes plus rounds,138mm, 4.5˝ and Series 9, pluscommon video sizes 72mm, 77mm,82mm, and 95mm.

Strengths: IRND .3, IRND .6,IRND .9, IRND 1.2, IRND 1.5, IRND1.8, IRND 2.1

True Cut IR Application: IR contaminationwhen photographing scenes withdigital cinema CMOS sensor cameras.

Schneider has developed a familyof IR filters to complement thedemanding requirements of today’sHigh Definition cameras.

High Definition camera arrayshave a high sensitivity to lightbeyond the visible range. This canbe beneficial in applications such asmachine vision or surveillance butfor most production this tends to bea problem due to unwanted colorshifts in dark or black materials.Schneider’s True-Cut IR filter solutionseliminate this problem by limitingthe light striking the CCD or CMOSimager to the visible spectrum.

Sizes: 4˝x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝ (Panavisionsize), 5˝x5˝, 5.65˝x5.65˝, 6.6˝x6.6˝plus 77mm Rounds.

NEUTRAL DENSITY FILTERS

Neutral Density AttenuatorsApplication: To control overallexposure and depth of field undervarious lighting conditions, withoutaffecting color or contrast. NeutralDensity (ND) Attenuators are used tocontrol difficult lighting conditions suchas bright sun, shadow shots of citystreets or excessive bright windows inan interior shot without having to hidea grad line within the scene.

These filters diminish distractingbackgrounds by enabling theuse of wider lens apertures, thereby reducing depth of field.Conversely, they can be used toproperly expose varying lightlevels within a given frameand allow the amount of lightreaching the film to be controlledwithout relying solely on cameraaperture. Made of the finestcrystal-clear, water-white opticalglass, ND Attenuators are precisionengineered with unparalleledsmoothness, uniformity and consis-tency and can be used alone or incombination with other filters withno image degradation.

ColorCorrectionFiltersColor Correction filterschange the color contentof the light to match thecolor response of the filmand permit the user tocreatively modify color in subtle ways.

Encompassing a wide range ofcolors and densities, color correctionfilters are categorized into threemain groups: Color Conversion, LightBalancing and Color Compensating. Each can create a wealth of practicalcolor-temperature corrections andcreative color effects.

85 & 81EF Color ConversionApplication: The 85 is primarilyused to correct the color of tungstenbalanced film when shooting in day-light. The 81EF helps penetrate lightfog and eliminates the strong bluetone & haziness produced by UV light. The 81EF reduces blue tones in shadowareas without causing the look of anovercast sky. An 81EF can becombined with an 85, to achieve over-correction resulting in a warm look.

The 85 remains the industry’s mostcommonly used color conversion filter.Schneider strictly adheres to KodakWratten color standards.

Sizes: Series 9, 4.5˝, 138mm, 4˝x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝ (Panavision size),5˝x5˝, 5.65˝x5.65˝, 6.6˝x6.6˝,138mm Round

Schneider’s 81 Series For Skin TonesApplication: The 81-Two isused to accentuate skin tones for awarmer appearance. For a subjectwith darker skin tones, the 81-One ismore appropriate. Ideal for romanticclose-ups, the 81 Series can be combined with softening filters.

Schneider’s 81-One and 81-Two warming filters were born from the 81-A. Both filters are designedto add warmth toskin tones andreduce excessiveblue in outdooropen shade.

Sizes: Series 9,4.5˝, 138mm, 4˝x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝(Panavision size),6.6˝x6.6˝ and 138mm Round

Tungsten balanced film without a Schneider 85 filter.

CombinationFiltersApplication: When more filtereffects are desired than can be fitin a two or three slot matte box, combination filters make it possible.

Blending two or more filter effectsinto one filter makes it possible tohave less glass in front of the lens—an advantage when using severalfilters simultaneously. Schneider’s 85Neutral Density combination filtersare precision ground and polishedto a perfect flatness and parallelthickness, and feature Schneider’sunique Edge Seal, which preventsedge-chipping and delamination, andalso reduces edge-reflections & flare.

Schneider offers several othercombination filters including the85/True-Pol® and 81EF/True-Pol.

Sizes: Series 9, 4.5̋ , 138mm, 4̋ x 4̋ , 4̋ x5.65̋ (Panavision size),5˝x5̋ , 5.65̋ x5.65˝, 6.6̋ x6.6̋ and138mm Round

EnhancingFiltersApplication: Improves the colorsaturation of reds, oranges & earth-tones such as rust, brown & amber.

The range of colors improved bythe Schneider Enhancing filter (madefrom didymium glass) makes itpopular for use on autumn foliageand brownish-red scenic compositions, such as those found at the GrandCanyon. It is also the filter of choicefor intensifying the red in objectssuch as tomatoes, cherries, strawberriesand fire engines.

For more dramatic and excitingeffects, a Schneider Enhancing filter can be combined with apolarizing filter.

Sizes: Series 9, 4.5̋ , 138mm, 4̋ x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝ (Panavision size)5˝x5˝, 5.65˝x5.65˝, 6.6˝x6.6˝ and138mm Round

UV-410 PenetratesHazeApplication: Ultraviolet-blockingfilter effectively reduces or eliminatesphotographic haze in locationswhere the atmospheric conditionscontain a heavy concentration of dustparticles, water droplets & pollution.

Photographic haze – often found inmountainous or coastal regions andindustrial areas – scatters light andproduces a bluish cast causing filmto render a lack of color, contrastand overall image quality. By filteringout ultraviolet light below 410nanometers, the Schneider UV-410blocks the blue cast, penetrates hazeand permits the film to capture vividcolors and sharper detail.

Sizes: Series 9, 4.5̋ , 138mm, 4̋ x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝ (Panavision size),5̋ x 5̋ , 5.65̋ x5.65̋ , 6.6̋ x6.6̋ ,138mm Round

COLOR CORRECT ION • ENHANCERS

GraduatedColor FiltersApplication: Add color to partof a scene where color may beweak or absent. Can also be usedfor color effects which contribute to the cinematic drama of a scene.

All Schneider Graduated Color filtersare part clear and part color. Theyare designed to be used in professionalmatte boxes, so that they are readilypositioned at the exact angle requiredto create desired effects.

Graduated Color filters, designedto provide a wide range of photo-graphic effects, work well with sky, foliage and skin tones. They can becombined with each other, or withother filters, to provide a virtuallylimitless range of breathtaking effects.

Schneider Neutral Density (ND)Grads can be used to balance exposure in uneven lighting situationsor to increase color saturation in skyscenes, by lowering sky exposure.

Soft or Hard EdgeSchneider makes both soft-edge andhard-edge Graduated Color filters.Typically soft-edge filters are usedwith wide to medium-angle lensesbecause these lenses have greaterdepth of field. Hard-edge filters arepreferred for use with telephotolenses or for bold transitions.

All Schneider Graduated Color filtersperform beautifully, providing exactlythe desired degree of color effectwithout calling undue attention to thetransition of the filter itself. In fact,soft-edge Schneider Graduated filtershave such a smooth transition fromcolor to clear, that the point oftransition is not readily visible evenwhen using short focal-length lenses. It’salso the filter of choice when shootingirregular horizons or city skylines.

Graduated Color filters featurecrystal-clear, water-white optical glass, and are protected against edge-chipping and delamination bySchneider’s unique Edge Seal, which also significantly reducesedge reflections and flare.

Sizes: 4˝x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝ (Panavisionsize) 5˝x5˝, 5.65˝x5.65˝, 6.6˝x6.6˝Graduated Color filters in Panavisionsize are available in horizontal(landscape) and vertical (portrait)

CTB ColorCorrection Application: When working inHD, balances temperature fromtungsten toward daylight.

Many of today’s HD sensors aredesigned to work best in a daylightbalanced lighting spectrum. Withpresets that compensate for tungstenlight, this often raises significant noisein color channels under difficult lowlight conditions. Schneider’s CTB filterline balances color temperature fromtungsten toward daylight in incrementalsteps. Users then have control tocorrect as much or as little of theexposure as desired. So they cancolor correct while maintaining lownoise levels at minimal light level.

The new CTB filter line has beendesigned to correspond to existinglighting color correction standards, offering a range of correction formost situations. Stop loss is 0.17for the eighth, 0.24 for the quarterand 0.34 for the half. These filtersmaintain a high MTF (modulationtransfer function).

CircularTrue-Pol® forVideo Assist& 3-DProjectionApplication: To prevent viewfinderblack-out on cameras which employpolarizing elements in the beam-splitters of the viewing system, likeArriflex 435 and MovieCam Compact.

Camera beam splitters send light intwo directions: to an eyepiece & to avideo tap. Light in a camera’s viewingsystem can become polarized, andwhen a standard (linear) polarizingfilter is attached to the lens, the lightbecomes cross polarized. This hindersvisibility & can create total blackout ofthe viewing image and/or the videotap.

Circular Polarizers employ a two-layer design to prevent blackout. Thefirst layer is made of the polarizingsubstance used in all True-Pol filters.Layer two is made of a 1/4-waveretarder plate to prevent cross-polar-ization. To ensure correct lens barrelplacement, Schneider clearly marks theCircular True-Pol filters’ outer surface.

Available in Left and Right handpolarization for projection in standardand custom sizes.

Sizes: 4˝x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝ (Panavisionsize), 5˝x5˝, 5.65˝x5.65˝, 6.6˝x6.6˝and 138mm Round

Quarter WaveRetardersApplication: To prevent left/rightdisparity in images that contain glare.

3-D camera rigs that employ abeamsplitter can be susceptible to partial polarization because of the silvered surface used bythe reflected image. This generallyproduces a left/right disparity in images that contain glare.

Schneider Quarter WaveRetarders ensure that both opticalpaths have identical properties, thuscorrecting the linear polarization.

These filters have virtuallyno light loss and can be used indifferent configurations to correctpolarization mismatches. The filtersare made of water white opticalquality glass with a thin filmlaminated within. Each filter ispolished to produce a high qualityoptical flat that can be usedwithout any reduction in resolution.

Sizes: Available in custom andstock sizes.

Application: During stuntswhich can damage a lens, SchneiderOptical Flats protect expensivefront elements and other filters, while providing the truest image, free of unwanted color shifts.

Made from Schneider’s clear opticalglass, these filters minimize oreliminate the need for laboratorycolor correction caused by filtervariation. Both the front and rearsurfaces of these solid-glass (non-laminated) filters receiveSchneider’s hard anti-reflectivecoating, which measurablyimproves light transmission.

Sizes: Series 9, 4.5˝, 138mm,4˝x4˝, 4˝x5.65˝ (Panavisionsize), 5˝x5˝, 5.65˝x5.65˝,6.6˝x6.6˝, 138mm Round

3-D WindowsApplication:Anti-reflective water-white glass toprotect 3D beam splitters.

Beamsplitters used in today’s 3-Dcamera rigs are an expensivecomponent of the systems. Howeverthey are susceptible to damage fromflying debris and are difficult to cleanwithout damaging. Because of theexposed front surface silver coating onthe splitters, even small deposits ofsaliva from talking too close to the rigcan contaminate and damage thecoating permanently by etching into it.

Schneider Optics offers a full lineof optical glass anti-reflection coatedwindows in stock and custom sizes toprovide low-cost protection. Theseprotective windows can be usedwith long focal length lenseswithout reducing resolution andare easily cleaned.

Schneider also produces OpticalGrade Plexiglas windows that can beused as protection. While theseeconomical windows do not offer ashigh a quality of optical performanceas glass they can be used in situations where durability and protection is needed.
