What is Schizophrenia?
• “a severe form of mental illness affecting about 7 per thousand of the adult population, mostly in the age group 15-35 years.”
Symptoms
Positive: -Delusions-Hallucinations-Thought disorder-Disorganised Behaviour
Negative:- Loss of interest in everyday’s
life- Lack of emotion/ motivation- Social withdrawal
Cognitive:-problems with making sense of information-difficulty paying attention
Causes- genetic
Causes- environmental
Relative risk of schizophrenia depending upon month of birth
Differences in MRI scans
Age at onset v gender
Treatment
• Antipsychotic medication• Antidepressant drugs• Mood stabilizer
-> 1st generation antipsychotics: negative effects are not so well treated
-> 2nd generation antipsychotics: positive effects are not so well treated
