Sanctions• The reactions people receive for following or

breaking norms• Positive sanctions: approval of a norm• Material = trophy, money, prize• Nonmaterial = hugs, smiles, high fives

• Negative sanctions: disapproval for breaking a norm• Material = being fined in court• Nonmaterial = harsh words, gestures (frowns), stares,

clenched jaws

Folkways and Mores• Folkways – norms that are not strictly enforced• Correct manners• Appropriate dress• Proper eating behavior

• Mores – norms that are strictly enforced because they are thought to be essential to the core values of the group• Flag burning• Cheating

• Folkways/mores are not universal and consistent• Dependent on location• Dependent on norms of the group

• A norm so strong that it often brings revulsion if violated• Bigamy• Incest• Cannibalism

• Sanctions are very severe and sometimes include prison, banishment, or death
