Core Values
Last month we were blessed to have Ken Willard come and
lead our church in a long-range planning seminar. It gave us
the opportunity to reflect on where we are as a church and on
where God might be leading us in our future.
One focus of the day was looking at our core values. Core
values explain who we are. It is our identity and illuminates
why we do what we do. They are the “constant, passionate, biblical core beliefs
that drive the ministry” as Ken explained.
Many of you participated in filling out a core values survey. That survey had a list
of 35 potential core values of a church. We had around 200 of you fill out that
survey and from those 16 core values rose to the top. We then took those 16
core values and narrowed them down to 6 primary core values of our church.
Here are the top 6 that rose to the top from our core values survey.
Preaching, teaching scripture
Christ-centered
Discipleship
Worship
Prayer
Excellence
I like these core values! It’s not enough though to just write these core values on
paper – we need to learn to live them as a church! In fact, Ken gave us an
example of how sometimes what we say are core values and how we live them
don’t line up. The following core values represent a well-known company in
America: Excellence, Respect, Communication and Integrity. Can you guess
which company had these as their core values? Enron! Obviously they did not
live up to the core values they preached!
We are seeking as a church to live into these core values as we see where God
is leading us in the future. However, we did add a 7th core value – it is an
“aspirational” core value. An aspirational value is one in which we currently do
not hold, but aspire to reach. Our aspirational value is reaching lost people!
Will you join me in praying for our church and our core values as we seek to
continue to discern God’s future for us here at FUMC Canyon?

The holiday season is officially here. The Wednesday
nights have come to an end. We have had a wonderful
semester. The children of this church have been blessed
with amazing leaders these past weeks. The kids have
learned about superheroes in the Bible; they’ve learned
from some bad guys in the Bible, they have created soda
geysers and lava lamps. The kids have spent time in
prayer together, praying for each other, their leaders,
their families, their schools, and many many mission
projects.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for jumping in and
helping us have another blessed, successful
Thanksgiving Basket mission. 60 families will receive
these blessings thanks to your love and support.
Last week to finish up the fall season, our littles created
Thank Yous, our elementary guys designed t-shirts and
made sun catchers for Operation Christmas Child, and
our Club 56ers sorted food and filled 51 of the 60
Thanksgiving bags. Together we have worked with other
kids in our community. We live in a very blessed
community and the greatest church family!
The children’s department is putting together some
Family Christmas themed baskets for a silent auction.
The auction will end at the close of activities on Sunday
Dec. 4. The proceeds from these baskets will be divided
among the Heifer Christmas Project and Hunsley
Strickland. Hunsley is the young, precious niece and
cousin of the Schulte family. Hunsley suffers from
fanconi anemia and has health issues she is dealing with
at this time. If you would like to donate items for our
Christmas baskets you can contact me.

Snack Pak 4 Kids Canyon If you are looking for a place to donate your time during the Advent season, please join the FUMC team when we pack food bags for Snack Pak 4 Kids Canyon. Every month we feed over 1,000 kids and it takes many people to make that happen. Please join us at the Snack Pak for Kids building behind Choice Media on Monday, December 12 at 6:00 p.m., and help us feed our children. If you can help, please let Francie Pittman (806-679-1411) know or just show up. It only takes 30 minutes of your time and you will definitely be changing lives.
‘In His Hands’ celebrated their annual Thanksgiving Gathering on Tuesday, November 15th and Wednesday, November 16th in the Fellowship Hall. There are over 500 family members/friends of the preschool children that come annually to enjoy a program presented by the Pilgrims, Native Americans, and
Turkeys of ‘In His Hands’.
‘In His Hands’ would like to invite you to be a part of their annual Christmas Program and Mexican Pile-On Dinner on Thursday, December 8th. We will be having Charlotte Wilson, FUMC Kitchen Coordinator, prepare the dinner. The dinner will be served, come and go, between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Donations for the dinner will be accepted at the door and will be used to enhance ‘In His Hands’. There is a choice of two program times, one at 6:00 p.m. and one at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary! Please come and join us for this wonderful night of celebration.

30 HOUR FAMINE 2016
Let me start by saying
THANK YOU to
everyone who supported
The Uprising Youth
Ministry as we
participated in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine. I
especially want to say THANK YOU to our adult
leaders: Lupe Acevedo, Kelsey Acevedo, Will Miller,
Stephen Williams, Lori Williams, Lisa Jones, Jon
Behrens, Aaron Tudyk and Christi Ybarra, without your
help this youth event would have been impossible! I
have to say I am very proud of our students. We had
27 students who decided to fast from food for 30 hours
in order to raise awareness and funds for starving
children around the world. The students raised over
$4,500, which in the hands of World Vision will feed
and care for 5 children for an entire year. Besides
fasting from food the students participated in a variety
of activities to help give them perspective on the
challenges those struggling in poverty face. Some of
those activities include feeding the homeless at Faith
City Mission in Amarillo (at the 24 hour mark of their
fast), “bartering” for their breakfast (juice) with whatever
they brought with them, and building a shelter for their
tribe with whatever resources they could find. Again I
have to say I could not be more proud of our students!
They did a fantastic job and MADE THE FUTURE
BRIGHT for children around the world. There are more
stories than I can capture in one newsletter article so I
encourage you to talk with the students and ask them
about their first experience with the 30 Hour Famine!

The United Methodist Women still have pecans for $10 for a one pound bag. You can pick them up in the office or call Becky Harp at 341-5758. Each
bag sold helps us bless our mission projects.
It is time to place your poinsettia order, so be sure to fill out your order form today, the deadline this year is Monday, December 12th by noon. ALL CHECKS SHOULD BE MADE to United Methodist Women and the
proceeds will go to missions that UWM supports. Order forms are available in the church office or on Sunday,
December 4 or Sunday, December 11.
Costa Rica 2017
The Costa Rica mission team for 2017 is forming and we
would love to hear from you. The trip is planned for June 18-25 and will be to Alajuela, Costa Rica. The estimated cost is $1,500. The signup deadline is December 16 so time is getting short. Contact team leader Charlie Munger at [email protected] or 655-1635 to reserve
your spot today or to get more information.
Earlier this year, we had a ramp cut in the curb in front of the west entrance to help our less mobile members and guests access the building more easily. Please help us keep it avail-able to them on Sunday mornings by only using the space in front of the ramp for drop-off and do not park/leave your car there for the duration of the service. Thank you for your coop-eration.
College Goodie Boxes
It's that time again - if you have a college student and would like the church to send a goodie box to your student for en-couragement from the church please make sure you get the address to the church office by Monday, November 28. You may email Christi Ybarra at [email protected] with the updated address or to request that you student be added to the list or you may call the church office.
What wonderful team FUMC Canyon had putting together Operation Christ-mas Child boxes. Janice Cranmer does such a wonderful job with get-
ting items to pack many boxes to send on the way to children. The smile on those children’s faces are priceless. Thank you to all those who came and helped and also for those of you that packed boxes on your own! Great job FUMC Canyon.
(Continued from page 1—Core Values)
I would invite you to write these core values and place
them on your mirror in your bathroom or somewhere
you will see them and be reminded to pray for our
church.
It is a blessing being in ministry with you and I hope to
see you on Sunday.
In Christ,
