3/27/2017 - Well, it was a quiet week here at Avon High School as our teams were farmed out to drier places for tryouts and practices. The predicted warmer temps for this coming week will hopefully bring the melt that we need to begin getting our fields in shape for the teams’ first games next week. In the meantime, we wish the coaches and athletes well, and commend Athletic Director, Tim Filon, for helping them find and create practice spaces to begin preparing for the season. GO FALCONS! THANK YOU, ALLISON SCHULMAN

Only a parent who has been around for a while can fully appreciate the beauty of the new online athletic registration process that made its debut two weeks ago and was single-handedly designed and installed by Tim Filon’s assistant, Allison Schulman. Isn’t it fantastic?! So convenient, so easy, so painless …

how this parent could have used it a few years ago when she had three AHS athletes here at the same time!

Please thank Allison if and when you see her. She has saved us time, energy (and a few trees, to boot)!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT : Softball Looks to Rebuild

It hasn’t been a smooth ride these past three years for the girls

softball program at AHS. They’ve had three coaches in as many years - a challenge which would be unsettling for most athletes. However, junior captain Jillian Haworth is non-plussed. “Actually,” she says, “it’s been rewarding because [she has] learned something different from each coach.” This year’s team will be one of the youngest ever for the program, but Haworth is optimistic; new players bring new energy. She sees promise in the incoming freshmen and a great opportunity for the team to bond and start afresh. This year the team has implemented something in which many fall sports participate, called “families.” Each upperclassman is assigned a group of underclassmen for whom they are to be a big sister. Haworth hopes this will enable her teammates to get to know each other better, and make the younger girls more comfortable asking questions and sharing ideas.

Softball runs in the Haworth family. Along with her many cousins who play, Jillian herself has been playing since kindergarten, and credits watching baseball with her uncle and grandfather with piquing her interest in the sport. Initially a pitcher, she has been playing third base the past few years due to injury, but has come to enjoy it. Haworth hopes that anyone who is interested in softball gives it a chance, because it’s a great sport - and one you can play well into adulthood. She says their team is very close, and that they are developing both “physical and mental strength” with their new leader, veteran educator and coach, Bruce Michaels. So look out for AHS softball this year, as they look to turn a new page in their playbook.

DID YOU KNOW?

With snow-covered playing fields, a long melt ahead of us, and no turf fields in town, Avon’s spring coaches have to be creative in planning meaningful, productive practices. On any day this week, teams were passing balls in

the two gyms, running through the hallways and on the pavement around the school, and taking buses in every direction to indoor turf facilities. Renting field and practice facilities is expensive, and teams pay rental fees with money from their Booster Club accounts - accounts that are funded by YOU. Every time you buy dinner at a restaurant fundraiser, purchase an ad in a team program, or donate Booster Club dues dollars to a team, you are helping pay for essentials - like field and court rentals.

Thank you! - and please keep the donations coming. For more information on donating to the Booster Club General Fund or a team specific fund, please contact Booster Club Treasurer, Jim Stapleton, at [email protected].

ATTENTION SENIOR-ATHLETES: As you make your final post-high school plans, don’t forget to apply for scholarships available through Avon High School! The Booster Club funds and awards many scholarships every year. These include four “Named” scholarships, in honor of fallen Falcons Dick Migli, Ali Hunter and Robby Brisco, and multiple “General” scholarships awarded to students based on their participation and success in AHS Athletics.

Applications for all Booster Club scholarships are available through the School Messenger alerts sent out by Guidance, in hard copy form at the main office, and here on our website. Note: students are welcome to apply for more than one scholarship. Questions? Contact Mrs. Davey at [email protected].

❏ The Collinsville Press published an article Kyle Emery and other members of the swimming and team’s success at State Opens last week. Click here to read the article

❏ The Avon Patch posted the list of Avon students who earned All-Conference honors. Click here to check it out.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

The Booster Club seeks a team representative for the Softball team. Team reps function as the liaison between the team, coach, and Booster Club. Time commitment is minimum and no experience is necessary. Interested? Please contact Susie Downey, Booster Club Vice President of Volunteers at [email protected]

Every Wednesday during all lunch periods, the Booster Club sells Spirit Wear to students and staff outside the AHS cafeteria and we need parents to man the table. NO experience necessary! If you can help on any upcoming Wednesday, please contact Nicole Leavens at [email protected]. Thank you!
