“Lightning” is Mesmerizing -- But
Deadly
Lightning kills more people in the United
States in a year than tornadoes. Mari-
ners are particularly at risk. Marine ves-
sels are often the tallest objects in a
large open space. Seeking the tallest ob-
jects, lightning has blown out the bottom
of boats and caused millions of dollars in
damage to navigational equipment.
Lighting is the result of the buildup dis-
charge of electrical energy. The air in a
lighting strike is heated to 50,000 de-
grees Fahrenheit. It is the rapid heating
of air that produces the shock wave that
results in thunder.
A cloud-to-ground lightning strike begins
as an invisible channel of electricity-
charged air moving from the cloud to the
ground. When one channel nears an ob-
ject on the ground, a powerful surge of
electricity from the ground moves up-
ward to the clouds and produces the visi-
ble lightning strike. A direct lightning hit
can damage or destroy vessels, overload
navigation and other electronic equip-
ment and electrocute crew and passen-
gers.
How do you know if you are in dan-
ger: If you see lightning or hear thun-
der, hear a loud static on your AM radio,
hear buzzing sounds on radio antennas
or mastheads begin to glow.
St. Elmo’s fire: The
glow on the masthead
produced by an extreme
buildup of electrical
charge is known as St.
Elmo’s fire. Unprotected
mariners should immedi-
ately move to shelter
when this phenomena
occurs. Lighting may
strike the mast within
five minutes after it be-
gins to glow.

The new “Boat Handling Course” replac-
ing Seamanship will roll out as a pilot
program on September 10, 2018.
This course will de-
but as a series of
seminars com-
prised of six, two-
hour sessions fol-
lowed by a tradi-
tional multiple
choice, closed-
book exam. Students completing all ses-
sions and passing the exam will receive
their Seamanship grade. The new cur-
riculum removes the material which was
redundant with ABC. All student materi-
als (guides) will be distributed electroni-
cally, as well as instructor materials.
Students and instructors participating
will be required to submit course cri-
tiques. I have notified all members not
yet showing the Seamanship grade of
this course soliciting interest. All mem-
bers have been sent separate email no-
tices. If you have not yet earned your
Seamanship Grade, now is the time to
enroll by contacting me via email at
([email protected]). Enrollment
will close on September 10, 2018.
The final results for the 2017-2018 ABC
Program (which ended on June 30, 2018)
are in and once again of the 349 squad-
rons reporting, our squadron is in the top
ten nationally.
We reported 121
students regis-
tered ranking
#6 in the nation
and #2 in Dis-
trict 27. The top
squadron in the
nation was from Cape Coral, Flor-
ida,which reported 260 students regis-
tered. Within District 27, Cape Fear was
#1 with 142 students registered. I wish
to thank our team of instructors, admin-
istrators, and staff who helped with our
accomplishment.
Elsewhere in education, we have per-
formed several “Jump Start” sessions
with new/prospective members. Alan
Savage is leading this program for our
squadron. Terry Middleton and I have
participated and more sessions will be
scheduled as boaters request assistance.
You must be certified by the SEO (me) to
participate.

great insight into our course and the

THE EDUCATION ZONE
A Major Purpose of America’s Boating Club
USPS (America’s Boating Club) will be
rolling out the new, Boat Handling
Course next month, which replaces
Seamanship, the course our squadron
typically offers in the Fall each year.
The long-awaited Boat Handling course
will be introduced on September 10th
through a pilot program, and all squad-
rons planning to teach Seamanship this
Fall are invited to participate in the pilot
and teach Boat Handling instead.
Boat Handling will debut as a single
course, comprised of six, two-hour
sessions: (ALL ARE CLASSROOM SES-
SIONS)
Rules of the Road – A Practical Ap-
proach
Confidence in Docking and Undock-
ing – Slow-Speed Maneuvering
Boating with Confidence – Handling
Your Boat Underway
Anchoring with Assurance – Don’t
Get Carried Away
Emergencies on Board – Prepara-
tion for Handling Common Prob-
lems
Knots and Line Handling – The
Knots You Need to Know
Boat Handling does not include redun-
dant Seamanship 2016 material — such
as terminology, hull and engine types,
and equipment requirements — that is
already covered in America’s Boating
Course.
During the pilot program, squadrons will
pilot the entire course and the price will
be the same as Seamanship
2016. Student guides will be available in
eBook format only; and instructor kits
will also be distributed electronically.
A Boat Handling exam is being prepared
and will be ordered in the normal way.
Students who complete the course and
pass the test will receive the Seaman
grade.
Feedback from squadrons that use the
new curriculum will be reviewed for in-
corporation in the official version of Boat
Handling to be released for general use
in the first quarter of 2019. At that
time, Boat Handling will be released as a
six-part course, and each session will be
released as a seminar.

NORMANDY – A Postscript
If you attended the Business meeting at
the Port City Club on Tuesday, August
14, you heard a very informative presen-
tation by Keith Reinsmith on the historic
events in Normandy, specifically the Mul-
berry harbors that were constructed to
support the allied invasion.
Last summer, Keith and I, and one of our
sons, were fortunate enough to travel to
Normandy to personally witness the ac-
tual location of that invasion. There’s a
small village, Arromanches, that is still
there, and is a testament to all that tran-
spired. There is so much history there,
so many emotions, a person cannot help
but be moved.
Today, that little village is thriving and is
a major tourist spot, mostly for this his-
tory. But also, as part of its charm and
attraction, it’s a beautiful beach area.
While we were touring, and getting ab-
sorbed in the history and devastation
that occurred there, people were frolick-
ing in the water and playing on the
beach. To me, it felt sacrilegious. Such
an historic site; and, to me, it seemed
the sanctity of it was not being re-
spected. I mentioned this to my son
and his immediate response was, “But
Mom, isn’t that why this battle took
place? So that people would have the
freedom to be able to come to the beach,
and enjoy life.”
Well, he’s right. Such a wise observa-
tion, one that previously had been lost
on me.
Thank you to all the men and women
who have sacrificed their all so that we
are able to enjoy our freedom.

Parker that his wife, Carolyn, is home
from the hospital. She is in Al's care and
hospice/palliative care.
Please, Carolyn needs all our prayers.
Carolyn has been so special to this

Now she needs everyone’s special
