LIVESTREAM MASS OR WATCH MASS ON TV

Ascension of the Lord “Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking up at the skies?” Don’t just stand there, do something! We are awaiting the return of the Lord in glory, but we do not wait in the same way one might wait for a bus or a cab. Christian waiting is an active process. Jesus sent his disciples to all the nations with the good news. When the Lord does return to judge the living and the dead, we will be asked to give an accounting of our lives. The gifts we have received from the Father have been given to a purpose. What are we waiting for?! “Go,

therefore, and make disciples of all the nations.” This Sunday the readings are (1) Acts 1: 1-11 (2) Ephesians 1: 17-23 (3) Matthew 28: 16-20. Gather # 1079 Year A Next Sunday Vigil the readings will be: (1) Genesis 11:1-9. (2) Romans 8:22-27. (3) John 7:37-39. Gather # 1083 Year A

Next Sunday the readings will be: (1) Acts 2: 1-11 (2) 1 Corinthians 12: 3-7 and 12-13 (3) John 20: 19-23. Gather # 1084 Year A

We have created a Mary, Help of Christians YouTube channel which features videos of Mass for this “stay at home” time. Links to the videos will be posted on the Mary Help website, our MHC Facebook page and in the bulletin. Click on the link to go to the video. UPDATE

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Offering Option

A few of our parishioners have their offerings to our parish set up as

“automatic” checks from their banking institution. We receive a

check from their banking institution at set times and for set amounts,

as predetermined by the parishioner. This type of giving saves the

parishioner from writing manual checks and also does not cost the

parish anything. The automatic checks are posted to our

parishioner’s donation record, just as if a manual check had been

written. If you think you might be interested in this option for your

support of the parish, please ask your bank to help you set this

up. We are told it is very easy.

Most online offering programs typically charge the parish a 4%-5%

fee off the top. If we used that type of program, an offering of

$50.00 would yield about $47.50. Instead, we avoid this fee by

receiving automatic checks, as described above. Thanks to all our

parishioners for your continued support of our parish in this very

uncertain time!

ONE MORE OFFERING OPTION

The Loving Memory section on the back of our weekly bulletin will

allow you to honor a deceased loved one by

including them in the “In loving Memory”

section. The cost is $52.00 per entry and

will remain on the bulletin until our renewal

in March 2021. If interested, please clip

and fill in this slip. Mail to Diocesan - 6161 Wilcox Road, Dublin, OH

43016. You can also call Vinnie DiNicola @ 614-580-8454.

Thank you for your support.

If You Can’t Receive Communion, Make a Spiritual Communion “Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.” Act of Spiritual Communion The Church encourages frequent, even daily, Holy Communion, but if at any time we cannot go to Mass in or out of this season of the coronavirus, we can still unite ourselves to the Eucharist through making a spiritual Communion. By making an Act of Spiritual Communion, we express our faith in Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist and ask him to unite himself with us. Here is the Act of Spiritual Communion written by St. Alphonsus de Liguori:

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

May 15, 2020

Dear parishioners,

I feel I am overdue to reach out and share some thoughts with everyone. We have been in this

pandemic for two months now and our routines and norms have been at least significantly, if not dramatically, changed. Hopefully, all of us have been able to adjust and grow in much of this. I am surprised how well I have been able to get along without some of the routines that were so much a part of my life in the past like going to the gym and watching sports on TV. My prayer life has been challenged but blessed, too. All in all, this pandemic has been good for me, apart from not getting to

say public masses. I really miss that, even being such an introvert.

Some thoughts on these past couple of months and where God is in all of it. God created us to need and follow him, but we set up a lot of things that pacify us without him. Usually because we think the price of needing and following God very closely is too demanding. In this pandemic a lot of those pacifiers have been taken away from us with mostly only God left to fill our needs and find fulfillment and direction in life. But once we invite him into our lives, we find how good it is to be following him, that the price is dwarfed by the rewards and joy. Saint Ignatius, in trying to find happiness and meaning in his life, tried a lot of things but finally realized God was the best thing for happiness in life. He came to that conclusion because the other things were just temporary pacifiers and as soon as he stopped doing/using them he was back to being unfulfilled and not very happy. But he recognized that in the things focused on God, that fulfillment and happiness would rise and remain with him the rest of the day. Hopefully, all of us have had experiences of that in these past two months. I think this pandemic has been allowed by God in the hope we would move past some of our pacifiers and give Him a new chance.

The really good news is that we get to start saying public masses again on May 25th. Because the virus threat is still very real and everyone is susceptible to infection, and many are high risk for serious illness, even death, if infected, we need to start back with some guidelines that need to be followed diligently. Even if one doesn’t feel very threatened by this virus, one really does not know just how it will affect them if they get infected, and all of us have a responsibility to try and protect others, not just ourselves, especially those most threatened and vulnerable. Accordingly, for our own good and the good of others, we need to be diligent in following the guidance of the Archdiocese and the local parishes in returning to mass. It is essential that the church is not a place where someone gets infected!!! So please cooperate with the guidelines. Following is a summary of those guidelines/directives.

First, if anyone feels sick in any way please stay at home. It is not okay to come if you just think it is an allergy or something similar. We need to presume the worst out of concern for others. Also, for anyone who feels uncomfortable/threatened by coming back to mass this early, especially the most vulnerable, feel comfortable with staying home. We will continue to record and hopefully live stream the masses to be watched at home. You can make a spiritual communion at home. The archbishop has given an ongoing dispensation for anyone who feels they should not be going to mass on any Sunday, so there is nothing sinful in it.

Ascension of the Lord

Page 8: SCHEDULE/ INFORMATION files/052420.pdf · MHC LIVESTREAM SUNDAY MASS ON FACEBOOK Sunday, May 24 @ 11:00AM Public Mass Returns Monday, May 25 Morning Mass 9:00AM Tuesday, May 26 Morning

When coming to mass we will have all doors propped open before and after mass, so no one must touch a handle entering or leaving mass. We will not have holy water out to bless ourselves for the time being, but we will have hand sanitizers at the entrance to use when entering or exiting church. Everyone is expected to keep the recommended spacing between others, in the pews, in the aisles, except for immediate family members with each other. Everyone is most strongly encouraged to wear a mask, and if you sit in any of the center pews, on either side of the main aisle, you will be required to wear a mask. Accordingly, non-mask wearers need to sit in the side pews to better protect the most vulnerable in the center. No one is required or encouraged to use the hymnals if you fear infection and since it is harder to sing with a mask on. Also, we will have every other pew roped off, so people are not sitting too close to others in that regard. We will not be doing any hand shaking at any time. We will not be doing the chalice for the congregation, and Communion must be received in the hands, not on the tongue. To speed up the mass we will be omitting or just saying the Gloria. I may stop chanting the mass, have not decided on that yet. There will not be an offertory procession as usual (the bread and wine will be put on the credence table before mass). We will be minimizing the use of extraordinary ministers as much as possible i.e., only one reader for both readings (one of our seminarians when available), only one acolyte (one of our seminarians whenever available, also). For communion, there will be only two distributors, myself and one other, my acolyte for that mass, who will sanitize his hands before distributing. At communion, we will do the two center aisles first, and then go over to do the side sections, one at a time. NO ONE IS TO CROSS OVER TO RECEIVE COMMUNION WITH OTHER SECTIONS. GO UP WHEN THE DISTRIBUTOR GOES OVER TO DISTRIBUTE AT YOUR SECTION. We do not want people passing each other going up or returning from communion. We will let you know when to start coming up. At least at Sacred Heart, in these warmer months, when it is not raining, I may set up a section for people to sit outside for mass on the parish center side, if I can get a speaker out there for them to hear mass. At communion time, I will come out to give them communion first and then come back inside to do the rest of the congregation. This is for the high-risk people. All of this is going to feel very awkward and not very communal, but it is something we must do to love each other and protect each other’s health. The Eucharist is more than worth it. Like everyone, I pray for the day we can get back to normal. Even a big-time introvert like me really misses shaking people’s hands and an occasional hug and/or kiss. All of it reminds us of how much we are communal people. It is probably good we are experiencing this as it will deepen our appreciation of how much we need to be with each other and take care of each other. God draws good out of anything. I know I will be able to use this experience of life in my homilies for years to come. Prayers and blessings. In Christ, Fr. Tom Nevels

To the left of this article is a short brochure of what to expect over the next few weeks. I hope this helps. These guidelines will be available for your convenience in the gathering space.

Archbishop Schnurr has allowed for the return of public masses on Monday, May 25th. We are preparing the church to increase your safety. We will still be live-streaming the 11:15AM mass. The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass is still in effect for those who are vulnerable, at risk or not comfortable with coming to mass at this time. We will have our first public mass on Memorial Day Monday, May 25th at 9:00AM. Things may look different to you. You may enter through any door, there will be hand sanitizer available at the all entrances. We will have all doors propped open before and after mass, so no one has to touch a handle entering or leaving mass. For those who come to mass, we must continue to maintain social distancing. You will need a mask. Everyone is strongly encouraged to wear and bring a mask. Every other pew is cordoned off. Please remember to remain 6’ apart. Please keep this distance in the pews between your family unit and the next family unit.

These cordoned off pews will be changed after each mass and all commonly touched surfaces will be disinfected as well as restrooms.

Since we cannot pass the offertory basket there will be no collection. We have offering boxes at the entrance by the bride’s room door and one by the side door near the coffee and donut room door. We will keep the usual schedule of daily mass Monday at 9:00AM and Tuesday at 8:30AM and weekend masses are Saturday at 4:00PM and Sunday at 11:15AM. If you go to daily mass that also counts as your Sunday obligation. As we mentioned before, the dispensation to attend mass is still in effect until further notice.

As a reminder, the church continues to be open for private prayer every day, see schedule in the bulletin.

Confessions are Saturday from 3:00-3:30PM, no face to face.

As we implement these precautionary safety standards, please be patient with us as we get ready to return to public worship. Please see Fr. Tom’s letter for more information.
