SCC Provides a Healing ServiceSister Mary Kim Tran resides at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Convent, New Orleans, LA and is a part-time spiritual caregiver at Passages Hospice ministering to the dying and their families. Passages Hospice is open to people of all faiths. Its mission is to provide the dignity, attention, and respect patients deserve at the end of life. Sister contacts the patient’s pastor or minister as needed, assists in the preparation of memorial services and liturgies and remains supportive as they go through the grieving process by facilitating a weekly bereavement program. Sister comments that “many times those who are dying have unfinished business with family members or friends. I assist the patients in coming to peace with others." Sister Mary Kim is also able to utilize her degree in Health Education and Nutrition as a dietitian supporting good health by providing nutritional advice through workshops offered at the New Orleans People Program which offers creative and intellectual activities that contribute to renewed self-esteem and sense of well-being. Sister is a needed resource for individuals and families, but more importantly, she is a source of encouragement to all!

2 Dear Friends, Greetings from the Office of Mission Advancement. 2016 was an exciting year for the Sisters of Christian Charity and 2017 promises to be noteworthy as well. First, I am so happy

to share with you our newly redesigned website at www.scceast.org. The new site is visually more appealing and has plenty of up to date information on the SCCs, as well as ways for you to update your contact information, make a donation, send a prayer request and share your comments and suggestions. Don’t forget to check out the Building Project page for ongoing construction progress reports and photos. In June, the Sisters of Christian Charity will celebrate Blessed Pauline’s 200th birthday. It is an amazing honor and gift to be able to commemorate her birth as the Sisters continue to live her mission of love on four continents! I am also grateful to be able to share our 2016 list of “Faithful Friends” in this issue of Weavings. Only with the help of our donors are the Sisters able to perpetuate their global mission of Christ-like love. A heartfelt “thank you” goes out to all who partner with the Sisters’ work. Finally, the Office of Mission Advancement hopes to offer more opportunities for you to engage with the Sisters of Christian Charity this year. We are hosting a number of events. See the last page for "Save The Dates." I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seeing you in 2017. Feel free to reach out by emailing me at [email protected], visiting our website at www.scceast.org or going to our Facebook page at Sisters of Christian Charity Eastern Province (or doing all three)! As always, thank you for your continued generosity. Through your support, you share in the Church’s mission of evangelization and bring the good news of the Gospel to the 12 different (arch) dioceses in which the Sisters of the Eastern Province serve.

program. Because most of the women are not proficient in the use of a computer, Sister Gerardine instructs them how to access and use the program. Once the women are comfortable, they can continue learning on their own. Since June 2016, Sister Gerardine has been the Assistant to the Director. responsible for collating statistics, organizing files and tracking correspondence. She also welcomes women who are new to the Center, teaches a weekly English class, and tutors two young women from Peru who are hoping to receive a college degree. Sister Mary Amata Reifsnyder ministers as a full-time registered nurse at a Federally Qualified Health Center of the North Hudson Community Action Corporation (NHCAC), serving uninsured and underinsured Passaic residents. Sister Mary Amata notes that the missions of NHCAC and the Sisters of Christian Charity are similar: “Although they might use different words in their mission statements, both the clinic and the Congregation are devoted to serving the poor with compassion. I am truly humbled, honored and grateful to be able to share Mother Pauline’s vision in the city of Passaic." The Sisters live at St. Anthony Convent which serves as a ministry in Passaic. Here, the Sisters strive to be a sign of hope in this urban environment by engaging neighborhood families socially and spiritually. Additionally, they witness to Christ through their presence and participation in various Catholic parishes in Passaic, Clifton, and surrounding areas.

In 2017, three Sisters of Christian Charity – Sisters Ann Marie Paul, Gerardine Tantsits, and Mary Amata Reifsnyder (pictured below)– are exercising “every work of charity within their power” (Bl. Pauline) in Passaic, one of the poorest cities in NJ. Through their ministries at the Passaic Neighborhood Center for Women, North Hudson Community Action Corporation and St. Anthony Convent, these Sisters witness to the presence of Christ and the charism of Blessed Pauline among the “least” of our brothers and sisters. Since 2013, the Passaic Neighborhood Center for Women – a ministry of collaboration between the Diocese of Paterson, its religious communities and others – has provided a safe and peaceful environment for the women of Passaic to meet, share and grow. Sister Ann Marie Paul serves as Director and collaborates with religious communities, parishes and community organizations to carry forward

the mission of the Center. The only requirements are love for the poor and openness to being trained to care for them. In October 2015, Sister Gerardine was hired to organize the Center’s Rosetta Stone (language)

This past September, the Sisters of Christian Charity opened a convent to serve two parishes in the Diocese of Metuchen, NJ – St. Magdalen De Pazzi Parish, Flemington and Immaculate Conception Parish, Annandale. At St. Magdalen De Pazzi, Sr. Josita Marks reports she has “come to feel 'at home' in this large parish, and as responsibilities continue to unfold, I feel blessed to be in such a welcoming and prayer-filled community.” Sister ministers as a part-time pastoral associate and spiritual director, offers parish prayer experiences and reflections throughout the year and conducts Baptismal preparations. In the future, Sister is hoping to begin a Parish Women’s Ministry. Sr. Faustina Nguyen is the Chair of the Parish’s Commission for Social Justice and Administrator of Our Lady of Hope House, located on the parish grounds. Sr. Faustina brings hope in Jesus and healing to parishioners struggling with spiritual, emotional, or material difficulties, while providing a wide range of goods and services including food, clothing, and household items. As Sr. Faustina says to her generous volunteers: “Our role is to serve, but our responsibility is to love! Hope House helps people become part of the community of the Church.” Sr. Anna Nguyen serves at Immaculate Conception Parish in Annandale, which is in close proximity to Flemington. As a pastoral associate, Sister serves on two levels – administrative and ministerial. Sister assists the priests and other leadership bodies in the works of evangelization. In her areas of service, Sr. Anna is a leader, member or consultant for new and current initiatives, such as diocesan pilgrimages, prison ministry, children’s liturgy, visiting the elderly, and Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Sister also prepares NewsBlasts and edits the website. Her focus is simple: “to serve with Christ-like love”.

Sister Maria Angeline Weiss (below) teaches grade 5 at the NativityMiguel School of Scranton, PA, which opened its doors in the fall of 2015. NativityMiguel is a tuition-free Catholic school for students from low-income families and underserved populations. The teachers bring lessons to life with a hands-on approach to learning, guest speakers, field trips, and other exciting and unique learning opportunities. In addition to rigorous academics, students take part in extracurricular activities. A recent ‘extra’ is the Marywood University String Project in which students learn to play the violin, viola or cello. Students were able to demonstrate their newly developed musical talents

Sister Patrice Owens has served as Principal of Immaculate Conception School (ICS), Bronx, NY for the past seventeen years. Working with her dedicated staff, she strives

to provide a quality Catholic education for the 513 students

in a faith-based and academically challenging environment. Sister is ever mindful of ICS’s and the Sisters of Christian Charity’s proud past of 144 years in the hub of the South Bronx and of its hope-filled future as part of the Partnership network. The Partnership for Inner-City Education, a school management organization for a network of six inner-city Catholic elementary schools in Harlem and the South Bronx, was formed in 2010. The Partnership’s mission is to develop outstanding Catholic elementary schools that provide low-income students with the academic preparation, values, and skills they need to lead fulfilling, productive lives. The Partnership has provided ICS with new administrative personnel, academic resources, classroom desks and chairs, and renovations to the building. Sister Francis Tran and Sister Anna Theresa Tran also instruct at ICS.

Recognizing JESUS in those we serve during Catholic Schools Week for the residents of St. Catherine’s Manor in Scranton. The students also participate in a “buddy program” with Holy Cross High School in Dunmore, PA. This partnership offers younger students the opportunity of engaging with an older role model and of experiencing the culture of a Catholic high school. Sister Maria Angeline believes she is able to fulfill her goal of teaching elementary students in this faith-based school setting. Sister enjoys her days at NativityMiguel because “I am not limited to the 8:00-3:00 school day. I am free to give my students the extra attention they need. Teaching at NativityMiguel means the chance to make a difference in the lives of these students. Being with them gives me joy!”

Sister Jude Biank (right) and Sister Janice Marie Kraft have been teaching at Cristo Rey New York High School for over a decade as an English teacher and Math teacher, respectively. Both Sisters serve as department chairs and are involved in after-school and summer programs. Sr. Jude is now practicing with students for the spring play, "You Can’t Take It With You". Cristo Rey New York High School is a Catholic, co-ed, college-prep school, part of the national Cristo Rey Network. The school serves students of all faiths who have demonstrated the potential and motivation to achieve success and who do not have the educational background or financial means to attend another college-prep school. Guided by the spirit of care for the individual, the administration and faculty challenge the students with a rigorous academic curriculum and a

demanding work-internship program. The ultimate goal is that the students will

graduate from college and become professionals, transforming the world. Sr. Janice Marie is enthusiastic about teaching at Cristo Rey, NY: “Although I’ve never worked

harder, teaching at Cristo Rey is the most energizing and rewarding

experience of all my years in the classroom. I know that I am making a difference!”

Sister Ann Marie Paul, Director of the Passaic, NJ Neighborhood Center for Women received an invitation from Sisters 2.0 to participate in an online panel of Sisters born after 1955, from around the country, sharing their best memories of religious life, their enthusiasm for religious life today and their hopes for religious life going forward. Sisters 2.0 is a U.S. based, international forum for the new generations of women religious. The thirty-minute online event that took place on March 8, 2017 was part of the celebration of National Catholic Sisters Week, a celebration that annually takes place from March 8-14. Created to honor women religious, it consists of events that instruct, enlighten, and bring greater focus to the lives of women religious. It is also the hope that as more young women learn about religious life, more will choose to follow this path. To know more, check the website: nationalcatholicsistersweek.org. When asked to comment on the invitation, Sr. Ann Marie stated: “I am thrilled to be a part of this year’s National Catholic Sisters Week and honored to have been chosen for this discussion panel. This is such a great opportunity to focus on the incredible ministries of those Sisters on whose shoulders we stand, those who are currently in ministry, and those who will minister in the future. I am grateful to those who have organized this event and to the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Grant that makes National Catholic Sisters Week possible.”

When Sister Ann Marie Kase retired from full time teaching at Cathedral Elementary School in Harrisburg, PA, she continued ministering in Wilkes-Barre, PA, this time at Holy Redeemer High

School as a part-time office assistant and “sometimes a

substitute." Sister recalls that moving from teaching Grade 2 in elementary school to a high school setting was a challenging adjustment. Sister has been at Holy Redeemer for five years and “loves every minute. Working with the faculty and staff and meeting the students every day is a very rewarding experience.” Some of the students are her former pupils from St. Mary’s, Pittston, PA and are now seniors preparing to graduate. Additionally, Sr. Ann Marie helps coordinate activities and meetings for the Companions of Pauline in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area, teaches Grade 1 CCD class at St. Nicholas Parish and brings Holy Communion to the homebound.

In November, 2016, Sister Martin Haubrich, (right) of Geisinger Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, PA had the privilege of traveling to Honduras with the World Surgical Foundation (WSF). This mission provides charitable surgical healthcare to the world’s poor and underserved in developing nations regardless of race, color, religion, or creed. The team traveled to Le Ceiba on the northern coast of Honduras for an eight-day surgical mission at the local hospital. After setting up a medical triage area, hundreds of patients were evaluated for surgeries. The team performed eighty-nine surgeries on Le Cieba’s children and adults who are not able to pay for medical care. In January, 2017, The World Surgical Foundation team was off to the Philippines to Ormoc, in the Province of Leyte. Patients were assessed, and within the week, 116 major surgeries and 122 minor cases were completed. The hospital has no amenities, no elevators; patients are transferred to the second floor via outside ramps. Every Wednesday there is Mass at the hospital. It was packed with people and mothers holding their newborns. Even the mayor of the town came to thank everyone! During rounds, the doctors and nurses gave patients and families get-well cards made by the students in the Mechanicsburg, PA School District. Sr. Martin has completed many trips with the WSF and comments, “Medical Missions are the means in which the poor receive care. I always come away from a mission changed and enriched.”

In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, NJ hosted a celebration of his life, words, and works. In attendance were

ministers from area churches, guests, the Sisters of Charity, Sister Marie Pauline Demek and Sister Marlene Weitzel, representing the Sisters of Christian Charity. The event was a moving tribute in scripture, song, and dance. The highlight of the evening was a series of reflections on the sermons and speeches of Dr. King given by pastors of various religious denominations, Sister Rosemary Moynihan, the General Superior of the Sisters of Charity, and the Mayor of Madison, NJ. This occasion is part of a collaboration among the churches of Madison and Morristown, NJ, religious Sisters and priests, and the colleges and universities in the area to take a stand for peace and justice, to develop a culture of mutual understanding and to eliminate violence in our local communities.

Sister Joanne Bednar, the North American General Councilor in Rome, spent three weeks in the SCC Philippine Unit in Quezon City, Manila, at Margaretha Home for the Blind. Sr. Maria Dolores Tan of the Eastern Province is the Administrator of the Home. The Mission supports fourteen women and girls in residence at the Margaretha Home for the Blind. Education and vocational programs are provided at the home and in the local schools. Sr. Joanne noted the stark contrast of the shopping malls with the local way of living and commented: “It is painful to see the extravagant malls so near to dire poverty.” In addition to experiencing the mission work of the Sisters and staff, Sr. Joanne had the opportunity to experience Filipino culture: watching residents and staff perform a traditional dance, Tinikling and visiting the inactive volcano, Taal. The chapel also evidences a Filipino environment. The tabernacle (right) is a typical construction made in “bamboo style." Sr. Joanne’s thoughts on her memorable visit were: “The residents of Margaretha Home are truly blessed to have the Sisters and staff who love them and have given them a chance for a productive and spiritually grounded life.”

Companions of Pauline Symbolize God’s Love in the World

The annual retreat of the Companions of Pauline of the North American Eastern Province of the SCC was recently held. The theme for the day was “Pauline and Companions: Symbols of God’s Love in the World”. The presenters for the event were Sister Marie Colette Martelli, pastoral associate at Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Monroe Township, NJ and Patricia Hydro, a Companion from Jim Thorpe, PA. Both presenters attended an international meeting of the Companions of Pauline in Rome, Italy and in Paderborn, Germany. The presentations included the various ministries of the Companions, prayer services, a witness talk and discussion on possibilities for the future. Sister Joanne Bednar also shared a reflection. The Companions presented Sister Mary Edward Spohrer, Provincial Superior, with an artistic rendering of the symbol of the Companions which was presented at the international meeting. The symbol was designed by Marianne Pittelli, a Companion from Nativity Parish. The day culminated with over eighty participants sharing ideas of how to translate and enliven Blessed Pauline’s vision for today so her charism continues. Submitted by Sr. Mary Veronica Kulsar

Sister Joanne observes one of the residents of Margaretha Home.

It is an exciting time for the Sisters of Christian Charity! On Saturday, June 25, 2016 the ground breaking was held for the construction of a new, more efficient Motherhouse on the Mendham property, which will function as a center for the province’s administration, formation, liturgical and community life. The Sisters from Holy Family Convent in Danville, PA will transition to the new convent, creating the opportunity for all the Sisters to live their charism in a dynamic, intergenerational religious setting. Since June, the part modular, part conventional construction has gradually expanded and the modular sections have been “dropped in” to become bedrooms and living spaces. The project consists of site development on an existing 112-acre parcel of land and the construction of a 164,910 square foot motherhouse. The house will consist of 120 resident bedrooms, a chapel, a kitchen, a dining area, community rooms, office spaces, and archives. The date for the completion of construction is the end of October, 2017. As the Sisters continue to see the building grow and expand, they are enlivened in faith and grateful for the opportunity to grow in holiness and service. “If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builder’s labor.” (Psalm 127:1) More pictures are available on our updated, user-friendly website: www.scceast.org.
