Pathogenesis: The virus is spread by a bite or by contamination with the saliva of a rabid domesticated orwild animal. The virus initially multiplies in the tissue at the point of entry, for example in muscle cells. From there it migrates via the nerve fibers into the central nervous system. The virus replicates in theganglion cells (acetylcholine receptors are virus receptors). These newly formed viruses spread back viaautonomous nerves to peripheral organs (primarily the salivary glands, leading to excretion of virus insaliva).

Negri bodies are eosinophilic, sharplyoutlined, pathognomonic inclusion bodies(2–10 µm in diameter) found in thecytoplasm of certain nerve cells containingthe virus of rabies, especially in Ammon'shorn of the hippocampus. Often also foundin the cerebellar cortex of postmortem brainsamples of rabies victims. They consist ofribonuclear proteins produced by the virus.

P107- Brain:Rabies
A portion of the braindemonstrated edema surroundingneurons, and Negri body, a roundreddish pink structure found commonlyin cytoplasm of Purkinje cells (Purkinjeneurons, are a class of γ-Aminobutyricacid (GABA) neurons) of the cerebellumand in the larger neurons of thehippocampus.
