We are 25 artisan women from San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala. We work in our homes, using our natural dying and weaving traditions to design and create weavings for you.
Our craft For our dyes, we cultivate and boil plants that grow locally. We use local flowers, leaves, tree bark, and more. We weave all of our textiles on backstrap looms that are secured around our waists. Each of us is the master of different techniques and abilities—weaving, dying, and even complex patterns of knotting to prepare the threads for certain designs. We take joy and pride in our craft, gather inspiration from nature, share ideas with one another, and respond to feedback from our customers.
Our mission Each sale contributes directly to the income of the woman who wove the textile to create that product. In our culture, there are few opportunities for women. The group gives us the capacity to contribute financially to our families, helping to make us equal partners with our husbands. This capacity gives us the power to make spending decisions that contribute to our children’s education and general well-being.
About us
How to use this catalog This catalog features some of our most popular general styles, but we design and weave each product to be totally unique. Please note that all listed measurements are approximations, and keep in mind that natural dye colors are not 100% replicable. We will work with you to fill wholesale orders (10 or more units) based on your preferences. Contact us at [email protected] to place an order or request a sample.

Each of us is a designer.
These scarves are inspired by the landscape of our beautiful lakeside
community, by the traditions of our ancestors, and by the colors we
envision on the loom.
Our dyes come from plants we cultivate locally, in the mountains surrounding our lakeside village: Avocado tree bark Coconut shell Cochineal (insect) Marigold Laurel Guava & other native plants
A. Multicolor scarf The threads that will become this scarf are dyed in blocks. Woven together, they create an elegant and unexpected effect. Measures approximately 64 x 10 in. (163 x 25 cm.).

A. Jaspeado scarf We use a traditional Guatemalan technique to create this modern geometric design, which is called jaspeado (say “ha-spee-aw-doe”). The threads are knotted in intricate patterns before being dyed, so the parts of the threads under the knots are protected from the dye. Measures approximately 64 x 10 in. (163 x 25 cm.).

B. San Juanera scarf, and C. San Juanera shawl This style is native to our village of San Juan, La Laguna. We use an extra stick when we set up the loom to allow us to create the sections of textured, twisted threads. Scarf measures approximately 64 x 10 in. (163 x 25 cm.). Shawl measures approximately 64 x 20 in. (163 x 50 cm.).

A. Inspiration scarf and Inspiration shawl
Each of these scarves and shawls is a new and unique combination of colors, our designs for each weaving day’s inspiration. We utilize a variety of weaving techniques. For some, we harvest the threads from pre-owned cotton sweaters and weave them with our own naturally dyed cotton threads. Scarf (not pictured) measures approximately 64 x 10 in. (165 cm x 25 cm). Shawl (picture A) measures approximately 64 x 20 in. (163 x 50 cm.).

Our traditions live through our craft.
We value the heritage of our community of San Juan la Laguna. Our traditions aren’t static—they
are the dynamic inspiration for the art we create, the clothes we wear, and the practices we hold sacred.

For lovers of authentic pieces of cultural art. This is the shawl that our grandmothers wore, and that we still wear to church and for special occasions. We receive one when we get married, and when we have children, we use it as a sling to carry our babies on our backs. We make ours just like our ancestors did—with natural dyes, tying the threads before we dye them to create the patterns that emerge on the loom.

B. Traditional reboso Semana Santa During Semana Santa, the Holy Week leading up to Easter, San Juan is alive with color and worship. Women wear our rebosos on top of our heads as we attend church, and as we walk in sacred processions throughout the streets. Community members collaborate to make alfombras, ceremonial rugs made from colored sand, sawdust, flowers and plants, in ethereal designs whose beauty lasts just long enough to be walked across by the people in the processions.
