It was great to be back from my travels and down the Club on Sunday
despite the somewhat inclement weather. Even with the best efforts of
mother nature, along with two faulty jet skis, Polar Bears pushed through
some spectacular winter waves as the IRB bobbed around providing
water safety.
This Sunday sees our annual Scarboro Polar Bears versus Trigg Island Blue
Hole winter swim off with all swimmers off go down at Scarborough
Beach, don’t be late as it’s a 10am prompt start and the conditions are
looking good.
In true Scarboro spirit there is no such thing as an “off-season” as our
members continue developing their lifesaving skills and qualifications
with a recent Pain Management requalification and the current IRB
Driver course under way. SLSWA are also continuing to offer free First
AID courses for Club Members this is another great opportunity for our
members to develop skills that will be relevant in their place of work ,
place of study or at home just as much as down the beach with a course
this Saturday, along with dates in September and October too.
See you down the beach for a Sunday morning Scarboro vs Trigg battle!

So, conditions were pretty wild, two jet – skis had to be retired before we even started, and yet 21 brave polar bears
and an IRB crew took on the high seas last Sunday morning . Conditions favoured surf skills and determination and
the more experienced surf swimmers featured highly in both divisions: B grade was first, with line honours to Brian
Hall, second was Tony Jackson and in third place -Bruce Simpson.
Peter Tanham was first in an elite group of A graders, Graham Croft was second and Zac Colman, third. This was
Graham Croft’s warm-up swim for the world masters championships in Gwangju, South Korea, where he is travelling
to next – good luck Graham! Great effort by all swimmers this week.
Next week is the annual swim against Trigg Island, to be held at Scarborough - rumour has it that they have been
talking it up - telling anybody who’ll listen that they’re going to win – so we’ll need all Scarborough swimmers to be
there to boost our chances. If possible, please bring a plate to share after the swim; we can defend our reputation
for hospitality if nothing else.

To all Scarboro Members as well as our regular Polar Bears - You are all welcome
(encouraged) to enter the annual Scarboro V Trigg Winter Surf Race Challenge on
Sunday 11th August at Scarborough Beach at 10am. We have heard from a reliable
source that Triggs have advertised to their members that they ALWAYS beat us. We
need to change this attitude from our adversaries!
Please come down to the club, bring a plate of food to share for morning tea and
have a swim. We need to win for a change as well as having a good time.

This Saturday Bob Welch will be taking the Ski Trailer down to Peppermint Grove Beach at 3pm to join in with the Board paddling crew. This is a great time to try Ski Paddling in shallow protected waters in stable plastic skis with instruction available. If you have ever wondered what it’s like this is the time to find out. We are hoping to keep this happening on the river for the rest of the off season. Stay tuned. One for your diary. All Ski paddling members and interested parties are advised that a Ski Paddlers meeting will be held at the club on Sunday the 25th of August at 9am before the Working Bee. We will be discussing possible additional training times, new paddlers programmes and such. Your attendance would be much appreciated. We still have some club skis available for sale at very reasonable prices. Perfect starter skis in all different leg lengths. Contact myself or Bob Welch and we can bring some to the Saturday river session for you to try. Finally a reminder. Your rack fees should be all paid up by now. I am reliably informed that the procedure now is for unpaid spots to be reclaimed and the resident skis moved up in to no reach land. The week after that …. by the bins ! Please make sure you are all paid up now.

Hi members, on the 25th of August from 10am to 12pm the
club will be having its second small busy bee after the polar bear swim to finish off all the small jobs that
didn't get completed the first time round. If you can help out please email me on
[email protected], a Sausage sizzle will be provided on the day.

By now you all should have saved the date for our Woodside Nipper Registration Day, or even better gone on line
and registered your nippers!!! We look forward to welcoming everyone back and also welcoming new members. We
do have some fun plans for the day, but registering online might save you the wait in a line.
FYI – the Woodside Nipper Calendar is in draft and awaiting Board approval, as soon as we have this relevant dates
will be put on TeamApp for you. Most importantly first day on the beach will be Sunday 13 October, with proficiency
swims at Scarboro Pool. More details will be provided soon.
There are a couple of finishing adjustments for our Woodside Nipper Age Group Team and we will share those
details with you soon.
Parent Volunteering will be a focus this season, in whatever capacity you can and on that note we are missing a
couple of key players.
Importantly at this stage we need-:
Woodside LITTLE NIPPERS COMPETITION MANAGER (or team???)
This role involves liaising with the AGMs, advertising the competitions to the Under 8s and Under 9s, completing
entries, organising officials and water safety when required, sorting equipment for the day. You may even like to
organise some training. There will be support to get you started. This is a great way to get involved with the Nippers.
Please email [email protected] if you are interested.
UNDER 6S AND UNDER 7S AGE GROUP MANAGER/S
This has traditionally been one person with a team of parent helpers but we would love to have one for each age
group. This season starts in January and goes for ten weeks. There is a bit of admin to complete and organisation on
the beach weekly. There will be support to get you started. This is a great way to get involved with the Nippers.
Please email [email protected] if you are interested.
Looking forward to hearing from some volunteers soon!
