We are pleased to introduce the new Scanlan Quick Reference Guide (QRG), a collection of new and existing instrument designs that are frequently used in cardiac, vascular, transplant, thoracic, neuro and other surgical specialties.

This year, we are excited to feature several new products... including our expanded LEGACY and Thoracoscopic Minimally-Invasive lines. For your convenience, we have color-coded each product category to allow fast, easy searches and identification of products.

The instruments listed in this year’s QRG are well stocked and available for fast, reliable delivery. If you have a need for more design options or are seeking a unique instrument design, the full Scanlan catalog or our newly designed website (scanlaninternational.com) offers an extensive selection of additional instruments and single-use product designs.

Even with our extensive design options, we understand the need to accommodate changing technology and unique surgical procedures. 1921Dennis R. Scanlan, Sr., brings ″non-rustable″ stainless steel from Sweden to the United States for use in the manufacture of ice skate blades and surgical instruments.

1961Surg-I-Band™ color coding is invented, beginning a new era of single-use and instrument care products.

1998Scanlan International works in cooperation with industry-leading robotic manufacturers to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation for new robotic surgical systems for use in minimally-invasive heart surgery.

1999 Scanlan International develops a new focus for Neurosurgical products working with industry leading surgeons.

2010 Scanlan International continues the development of new Thoracoscopic and Minimally Invasive instrumentation. Designed with traditional handles, these instruments allow small incision access within the Cardiac/Vascular and Thoracic arenas.

2005 Scanlan International proudly celebrates 85 years of excellence in the design and manufacture of surgical products.

1968Tim Scanlan, D.R. Scanlan, Jr.’s son, joins the company and expands the instrument line, setting up a worldwide distribution network.

1970Scanlan International offers the world’s medical community its latest invention, the new Aortic Vein Punch, for use in coronary bypass.

1975The new Diamond Dust™ texture is developed to meet the need for an instrument tip surface that would provide surgeons with definite control without trauma to tissue or damage to needles.

1980Scanlan International begins offering complete medical packaging services, combining its U.S. facilities with a new office in Amsterdam.

1980Scanlan International develops the world’s first single-use aortic vein punch.

1997Working with world-renowned cardiovascular surgeons, Scanlan International begins to develop innovative designs and concepts for minimally-invasive surgical instruments.

1923Dr. William J. Mayo works in collaboration with Dennis R. Scanlan, Sr., to design and manufacture the first Mayo surgical scissors.

1925Dennis R. Scanlan, Sr., makes the first Crile forceps for Dr. George W. Crile at the Cleveland Clinic.

1930Dennis R. Scanlan, Sr., convinces Walter Chrysler to use stainless steel for the roof of the new Chrysler Building in New York.

1935Dennis R. Scanlan, Sr., works in collaboration with Dr. Harvey Cushing to create neurosurgical instrumentation.

1937Dennis R. Scanlan, Sr., invents the portable iron lung for use in the treatment of polio patients.

1946Upon returning from England, where he served as Captain in the 8th Air Force, D.R. Scanlan, Jr., began work with his father to design and manufacture new surgical instruments, as well as single-use and instrument care products.

1950sThe Scanlans work closely with Dr. C. Walton Lillehei and others at the newly founded heart surgery program of the University of Minnesota.

Nitinol is a metal alloy which is flexible and has shape memory. This means that the nitinol portion of the instrument can be bent by the user to a desired curved shape for use. The instrument will return back to its original shape when exposed to a temperature of 60°C - 90°C (140° - 194°F). Steam autoclaving exceeds this temperature and is the recommended method to return the nitinol portion of the instrument back to the original shape.

Nitinol is a metal alloy which is flexible and has shape memory. This means that the nitinol portion of the instrument can be bent by the user to a desired curved shape for use. The instrument will return back to its original shape when exposed to a temperature of 60°C - 90°C (140° - 194°F). Steam autoclaving exceeds this temperature and is the recommended method to return the nitinol portion of the instrument back to the original shape.

Scanlan offers two styles of single-use graft markers. U-shaped A/C LOCATOR® graft markers assess graft patency during postoperative cardiac angiography. RADIOMARK® graft markers are smaller, disk-shaped graft markers designed for use with peripheral and coronary grafts. Following graft placement, all graft markers can be applied using 5-0 or 6-0 sutures and will not migrate. WARRANTYSCANLAN® instrumentation is guaranteed to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for ten full years. Any instrument which proves defective when used for its intended purpose will be repaired or replaced at no charge, at the sole discretion of Scanlan International, Inc. This warranty is in lieu of all other warranties, either expressed or implied. In no event shall seller be liable to buyer, or any successors of buyer, for any claim for lost opportunity, loss of goodwill, or consequential or incidental damages of any kind for any amount in excess of the price of the product. Seller agrees to replace or to issue credit at seller’s sole option any product determined to be defective in materials or workmanship. Seller shall not be responsible for the cost of labor or charges of any kind incurred due to product defect. Your rights under this warranty may vary from state to state and country to country.

SCANLAN® Instrument Sterilization Trays: SCANLAN® instrument sterilization trays are warranted for 12 months against defects in material or workmanship.

SCANLAN® DIAMOND DUST™ Instrumentation: SCANLAN® DIAMOND DUST™ jaws are guaranteed for 12 months. If needed, the DIAMOND DUST™ surface will be restored at no charge during the initial 12-month period.

Needle Holders: The use of suture needles larger than those recommended may result in damage and invalidate your warranty. Please see The Suture Size Guide for SCANLAN® Needle Holders for recommendations regarding the use of suture needles with SCANLAN® instrumentation. A copy of this publication is packaged with every SCANLAN® needle holder and is also available upon request.

Titanium Instrumentation: Different shades of blue may be found within the extensive line of anodized SCANLAN® titanium instrumentation. SCANLAN® Premier™ Scissors: Sharpness of SCANLAN® Premier™ Scissors is guaranteed for 12 months. If needed, resharpening will be performed at no charge during the 12 month period.

Heifetz™ Clips and Advantage™ Bipolar Forceps: Product in the original packaging may be returned for full credit within 60 days domestic and 90 days international of invoice date. All used product will be considered FIRM SALE. Warranty for materials and workmanship will be one year for clips.

Reliance Bulldog Clamp: Warranty for materials and workmanship will be one year. All sales are considered FIRM SALE.

DEAR CUSTOMER, PLEASE NOTE: Due to the nature of our surgical instrumentation manufacturing process and our strict quality standards, various instrument patterns may occasionally be unavailable. We apologize for this inconvenience, however, each of our instruments is made by hand in a tradition of high quality craftsmanship. Therefore, scheduled delivery dates may change. We strive to be accurate as possible regarding this information, however dates may become extended and availability dates may change. Again, we apologize for this inconvenience. We will be happy to assist you in choosing an alternative instrument, as well as assist you in any way we can.

CARE & MAINTENANCE OF INSTRUMENTSTo maintain optimum operating condition and to protect your warranty of SCANLAN® instrumentation, we recommend the following along with your general maintenance:

Clean. Make certain that all blood and debris are removed from the instrument as soon as possible after use. Do not allow blood to dry on the instrument.

Lubricate. After a thorough cleaning and rinsing, treat the instrument with an antimicrobial water soluble instrument lubricant.

Identify. Scanlan can provide safe and appropriate instrument identification marking system(s) upon request. Do not use a mechanical engraver to mark the instrument. If you engrave the instrument, the warranty will be invalidated.

Repair, Refurbish or Sharpen. Have this instrument repaired, refurbished, or sharpened only by a Scanlan-authorized facility. Servicing by an unauthorized facility will invalidate the warranty.

Sterilize & Store. Instruments should always be sterilized and stored in an ″open″ and unlocked position. This increases the life of the instrument, prevents possible breakage, and is recommended by established standards.

Protect. Be certain all delicate tipped instruments are covered with a device specially designed for instrument protection (such as SCANLAN® Tip Guard™ instrument protectors) during storage and sterilization.

Use. Instrument must be used for its intended purpose only. Improper use or care will invalidate warranty.

Modifications. Modifications and repair of this instrument are available and must be done only through an authorized facility. Modificationsbyanunauthorizedfacilitywillinvalidatethewarranty.
