    Installing ScanGear CS-U

    Befo re you instal l ScanGear CS-U, m ake sure that you have accom plished

    the f o l low ing tasks:

    M ake sure that th e com put er is equipped w i th an enabled USB

    po rt. In M y Com pu ter - Con trol Panel - System icon, click the

    Device M anager tab and d ou ble-click Un iversal serial bu s

    contro ler . If you can see the nam es of th e Host Cont rol ler and

    USB Roo t Hu b d isplayed, the com pu ter is equ ipped w ith an

    enabled USB port. Som e com pu ters m ay require enabl ing t he USB

    fu nct ion w ith a BIOS sett in g. For d etai ls abo ut enabl ing th e USB

    port w i th th e BIOS set t ing, see your com put er manu al.

    M ake sure the scanner is conn ected to a com pu ter.

    If a previous version of ScanGear CS is installed on your computer,

    uninstall i t before you install ScanGear CS-U 5.7.

    Note

    W ith W indow s 200 0 Professional, ensure that you log on

    as an A dm inistrato r to insta l l /uninsta ll th e sof tw are.

    If ScanGear CS-U has already been installed according to

    th e instruct ion s in th e Gett ing Startedgu ide tha t cam e

    W hen th e scanner is not connected to t he comp uter, the name of the

    scanner w i l l no t b e displayed so i t cann ot be un instal led. Befo re you

    4. Cl ick the OK b ut t on to c lose the dia log bo x.

    categ ory. If CanoScan appears, select it and click the Remove

    W hat are the Sim ple M ode

    and Advanced M ode?

    You can run ScanGear CS-U in e ither of tw o m odes: the Simp le M od eand Advanced M ode.

    Sim ple M od e

    The Sim ple M od e, as its nam e im plies, is easy to use and f ast. You can

    set up a scanning job q uickly just b y select ing f rom th e nam e that best

    describes th e job you w ant to execute: Color Pho to , Color Pho to Fine,

    B&W Pho to , and so on . Al l you have to do is select on e Im age Type

    sett ing w hich sets up th e scanning job f or you auto m atically. You can

    accept t he sett in gs and start t he scanning job, or you can m ake sm alladjustments to the sett ings before you begin. For rout ine scanning jobs

    you can create your ow n Image Types and save them un der a nam e that

    w i ll listed am on g t he pre-def in ed select ions.

    A d va n c e d M o d e

    The Ad vanced M ode p resents m ore opt ion s w hich allow you to set up

    pro fession al quality scann ing jo bs. You can use precise sett ing s to select

    th e scanning area in the Preview Area, adjust Co lor M od e and

    Resolut ion, and take advantage of the w ide select ion of Tone opt ions(adjust ing Con trast/Brigh tn ess, Gam m a, Histo gram , Special Ton e Cu rve,

    and Thresho ld).

    th e t im e i t takes to scan an im age because you are pre-scanning or

    Gamma Sheet

    W hen t he Gam m a but ton is c licked, th e Gamm a sheet is d isplayed.

    Gam m a refers to a p rocess w here mid-t on es are shif t ed so th at th e

    l igh ter colors are l ighten ed and darker colors are darken ed. For exam ple,

    let us say you scanned a p ho to graph of a sub ject in a bo at in a tree-lined

    lake and the shadow s of t he t rees are dark enou gh and the w hi te of th e

    boat is l ight enoug h, bu t t he blue in th e sky, the blue of the w ater, and

    th e blue of th e sub ject ' s clothin g al l look t he sam e. By increasing th e

    Scann er Gamm a value of t he image, the sky might becom e l ight er and

    the w ater darker, g iving a bet ter contrast to the im age. The M oni to rGam m a value is a reciprocal num ber of th e Scanner Gam m a value.

    Ho w to Avoid Problem s

    Here is som e general advice on avoiding prob lems in your scann ing jobs:

    Start w ith t he b est p ossible or iginal image t o scan.

    Select o nly the par t o f t he im age you w ant t o scan. Preview the

    image and select i t w i th the Crop and Au to Crop bu t to ns. Not only

    do es a m ore p recise select ion save f i le space, bu t your imag e

    qual i ty w i ll be m uch h igher.

    Check the o utp ut f i le size before beginning the scan. M ake sure

    you h ave enou gh ro om i f you are scanning f i les th at require a large

    amo unt of d isk space.

    M atch your Color M ode to the ou tpu t pu rpose. If you are scanning

    text, u se th e Text Enh anced m od e. If you are scanning l ine art , use

    the B lack and W hi te set t ing, and so o n.

    M atch your scan resolut ion to the t ype of f i le you n eed. If you are

    scann ing im ages for u se as .GIF or .JPG f i les on th e W eb, you do

    not have to scan at 600 d pi . A l thou gh i t is recom m ended th at you

    scan at a h igher resolut ion than you n eed for h igh-qual ity color

    imag es, you shou ld balance that facto r against you r planned u se

    for th e image.

    Troubleshoot ing ChecklistThe scan ne r diag no stics te st f ails.

    Problem: The Scann er Diagn ostics test start ed w ith th e Test Scann er

    button on the Scanner sheet, returns a Test Failedmessage.

    Cause: The scanning uni t m ay not b e in i ts hom e posit ion.

    Solution: Close th e ScanGear CS-U w indo w i f i t is open. Try turn ing

    the scanner of f and back on again by unplugg ing and

    plug ging in th e USB cable. Then restart yo ur com pu ter.

    Colors not w hat yo u expect.

    Problem: The colors in th e preview image appear d i f ferent f rom the

    colors in th e original image.Cause: The scann ed colors need to be adju sted.

    Solution: M ake sure the A ut o Ton e but to n is selected. If fu rth er

    adjustments are necessary, use the Tone sheet buttons.

    The preview image of a phot ograph appears b lurred but the

    scanned image o f t he same phot ograph appears sharp.

    Problem: W hen zoom ing in on a phot ograph in th e Preview A rea,

    the enlarged image appears blurred.

    Cause: The p review scan uses a low er resolut ion t han th e f inal

    scan. If you zoom in on a preview imag e so i t is enlarged,

    the im age w i ll not m ainta in i ts resolut ion in the sam e w ay

    as th e f inal scanned im age.

    Solution: Select a m agnif ied area and p review th e image again. The

    scan shou ld d isplay a sharper imag e.

    If no t, conn ect the scanner. Then restart you r com pu ter. If

    th is do es no t correct th e prob lem, consult th e scanner user

    set up your scanner.

    Scan Gea r CS-U d oe s no t lau nch.

    Problem: ScanGear C S-U d oes no t lau nch , th e screen freezes, or

    another software appl icat ion launches.

    Cause: The scanner m ay not b e conn ected correct ly, or you m ay

    have chosen the w rong scanner source in your sof t w are

    appl icat ion. The scanner conf igurat io n f i le m ay have beenchanged.

    Solution: M ake sure the scanner is prop erly conn ected to you r

    compu ter before you t urn on the comp uter and star t

    W indo w s. If not , conn ect the scanner. Then restart your

    computer .

    M ake sure you selected th e correct scann er in th e parent

    sof tw are app l icat ion. For det ai ls, see your sof tw are

    Scanning is too slow.

    Problem: The scanner is taking an un usual ly lon g t im e to pr int or

    scan.

    Cause: The selected o utp ut resolut ion of the im age may be to o

    high f or th e resolut ion of you r pr inter, or your comp uter

    m ay be low on m emory.Solution: Befo re scanning th e image, m ake sure you h ave set th e

    Scan Resolut ion on the M ain t ab to not exceed th e

    resolut ion o f you r pr inter. Also check to see i f there is

    enoug h m emo ry available in your com put er. Before

    scanning , quit o th er appl icat ion s th at are no t in use.

    Parts of im age s are m issing o r not aligned.

    Problem: Som e characters are missing from th e im age in th e Preview

    Area, or th e image is no t al igned in t he Preview A rea.

    Cause: The p age has been placed on th e scanner im prop erly.

    Solution: Check t he scanner an d p lace th e original correct ly to ad just

    the image.

    Image is too l ight or too dark com pared to t he or iginal .

    Problem: Scanned or pr inted image is m uch l ighter or d arker than

    the original.

    Cause: Im age and color adjustm ents may not have been setproperly.

    Solution: The b est solut ion is to scan th e imag e using al l def ault

    set t ings again. Then m ake im aging and color adjustm ents

    as necessary.

    Black -po in t

    The darkest p ort ion o f an im age scanned as Color or Grayscale. W hen

    you cl ick on th e im age w ith t he Black-poin t eyedropp er, all ton es darker

    th an t he selected sam ple to nes are adjusted to black.

    Brightness

    The overal l am oun t o f l ightn ess or d arkness in an im age. An image w i th

    m aximum br igh tn ess tends tow ard w h i te; an im age w i th m in im um

    brightness tends toward black. While contrast refers to the range and

    num ber of ton es in an im age, br ight ness refers to the int ensi ty of t ones.

    Cal ibrat ion

    Calibrat ion refers to the ad justm ent o f color processing f or inp ut and

    out put devices on a com put er, so th at the colors m atch throug hou t th e

    process. For exam ple, calibrat ion ensures that th e color imag e scanned
