The time has come to design and build our own club shirt. We have tried for many years to make it a reality, but

never quite achieved a solution, well now we have. The society has a look and feel that I think represents the

ACTSMS down to a T. A monthly meeting with everyone wearing our new shirts would look fantastic. We encourage

every member to join in and take advantage of our subsidised shirt. More details shortly on the website.

President’s Report

Welcome to July – and the last meeting of the modelling year for the ACTSMS. The cold chill is a great time to either

flee up north, or stay inside and build a model(s) (I’m doing both ☺)

There’s been plenty going on at the ACTSMS in the last couple of months – shows, blitz builds, workshops, weekend build days, a monster swap and sell, creation of a new special interest group, or SIG, and modeller’s feedback sessions – which are going from strength to strength. If you are interested in any of these, don’t stand back, get involved.

More is yet to come for the rest of the year too – and like always, give us your ideas for workshops etc.

We are also very excited to show you the new design for a new club shirt – we will be presenting the design to the club at the July meeting.

There is an important vote going on at the moment – it’s the general election for the Club’s sentinel shield and Kitty Hawk cup kits for 2017. By the time of publication, the results should be known. Thanks to all those that voted.

It is also with regret that I report that Mr Dave Richo is retiring as VP for the club. I would like to thank Richo for all his hard work and his uncanny ability to herd cats like us in the right direction. If anyone would like to nominate for the VP position, contact me or Dave Richo before the AGM in August.

Don’t forget, there is another blitz build being organised by Tony Martin – scheduled for the weekend immediately after the July meeting. More details are on ACTSMS Blitz Build page on facebook.

That’s all from me – I look forward to seeing your winter builds at the July meeting.

The 2ST quarter 2016 Committee Matters

Over the last few months the committee has worked through a few items of interest interspersed with organising

the mid-year Swap and Sell. Our attention now turns towards ScaleACT 16 and the AGM that will be held on

Wednesday August 10.

One item that we have worked through is a club shirt. Interest in a club shirt was bought to our attention some

months back, and the committee has come up with a simple, but effective shirt for all financial club members. The

Club shirt is in line with promoting our club and our presence in the greater community.

It also fits in well with our developing media plan – through social media and through the greater Canberra media.

We have seen some results of this work last ScaleAct as a greater number of the general public attended the event.

Our aim is to make ScaleAct 16 bigger and better than last year, and a greater media exposure will aid our overall

aims that include growing our club.

The calendar, as ever, is a work in progress, and we continue to see positive results in plans such as the feedback

forums we have run until now. We will continue to massage the calendar to get the right balance between

modelling, club discussions and guest speakers.

Our attention is now on ScaleAct 16. As part of the process and to allow the membership a greater say in the

selection of kits, we have run a successful nomination and voting process for the Kittyhawk and Sentinel Shield kits

for 2017. These will be announced shortly, and I understand that the result is not hung and we can move ahead

quickly to allow traders to stock up beforehand at this year’s ScaleAct.

Secretary ACTSMS Tony Allocca

Treasurer’s Waffle

A big WELCOME to everyone for the July meeting. This newsletter marks my first full year as the Treasure with the responsibility of balancing the society’s books and present the years figures one month prior to the AGM in August to allow everyone to see how we have been tracking financially. Fortunately, the society continues with a very strong financial position, as it has been for some years now with a big thanks to the efforts of previous Treasurers, particularly Dave White and Ray Bromwich (maybe these two should be running the countries books!). The committee has been very fortunate in being able to take advantage of several beneficial opportunities for the society. These include the Hellenic Club’s continued support for our meeting rooms at no cost, the SnowyHydro Southcare for allowing us to conduct three of our monthly meetings at their facility in Hume (& a big thank you to Len Bowen for the logistics) and the running our annual competition, ScaleAct, at a non-profit / break even basis. Cheers,

From the Editorial Team

Welcome all to the 2Q16 newsletter. While Matt has been out of town with Defence stuff, the newsletter has fallen to

me this month. As a historical document for the society we have plenty to record from the 2ND

quarter of 2016. These

last few months have been very busy from a society perspective. We have

hosted the annual society swap and sell, nice effort MR and MRS Grieve,

changed venues a couple of times due to the Hellenic club not being

available. Had a very successful Blitz build weekend, Thanks JC, with more

just around the corner, Thanks MR Martin. Designed and built our first

society shirt. Sent a bus load of boys down to Melbourne to show them how

to build models, and participated in numerous club activities.

One of the success stories this year, I think has been the round tables

forums. The whole idea is to encourage as many members as possible to

bring in projects either underway or completed and use the experience

around the table to discuss ways forward, techniques and ideas for their

current builds. The table has a facilitator to keep everyone on track and to

help tease out the issues and ideas that everyone brings to the table. The

subjects are many and varied with not only participation at the table but

also from the floor.

As I mentioned before we have moved around a little this year due to the Hellenic club doing renovations upstairs.

As reported in the 1Q16 we took up an option to use the SnowyHydro facilities for three meetings this year. These

meeting were very well subscribed and

as far as we could tell all members

enjoyed their time at the temporary digs.

On our last night the society headed by

the President Ben Frohling, made a

donation of $500 to SnowyHydro

charity.

2016 Society Swap and sell

You would think that after all these years of running the swap and

sell, we now know how Michael Grieve does it!!!! Here is proof that

he has had some help along the way

Would YOU place your wife in charge of the kit collection?

If you can’t walk around and buy,

You can just sit there and talk about buying.

I like a guy that builds a bit from column A and

column B.

DMS on tour at the Singapore Air show

The Singapore air show is held every two years at Changi airport. The air show featured some of the most recent

military hardware and civilian aircraft. I saw 2 x F-22 Raptors,

a Boeing 707 aerial tanker an Osprey VSTOL transport.

There was a new airbus A400M transport deployed by the

Malaysian Airforce. There was also an Apache AH-64

helicopter, 2 super Pumas, a F-15 Eagle, a CH-47 Chinook

heavy lift helicopter. The RSAF had several F-16 Falcons,

two in their national colours and the RSAF Black Knights

display team colours. In addition to that I saw a new RAAF C-

27 Spartan on display which also gave a great aerial display.

The French had a Dassault Rafael and 2 x SU-30 from the

RMAF doing an air display. The RSAF had both the apache

and F-15 eagle doing aerial tricks. Also present was the

Black eagle from South Korea flew aerobatics in their T-50

trainers. The USAF flew a B-52 above the airport as did the

F-16 Falcons.

ACTSMS Page 5

There were a number of corporate displays with both the Chinese with their JF-17 fighter and the Russian with

models of their helicopters were on show. And also the Italians had models of their Augusta helicopters and jet

trainers represented. The next air show is on the 7th of February 2018.

Modeller of the year results

Well that wraps up our first year of our revamped Modeller of the Year and Exhibitor of the Year competitions, which are now run on a peer assessment basis in conjunction with the monthly People's Choice voting. The Modeller of the Year is the modeller who receives the highest number of People's Choice votes across the year, while the Exhibitor of the Year is the modeller who brings in the highest number of models. The spreadsheet shows all of the results for both competitions, which attracted a very healthy cumulative total of 115 models across the year (an average of just under 15 models on the table for each of the eight months we ran People's Choice voting). The top three results in Modeller of the Year were very close, as follows: 1. Matt Lyons (184 points for 8 models) 2. Justin Hogg (170 points for 12 models) 3. Ross Carlyon (137 points for 24 models) The results in Exhibitor of the Year were not as close, as you can see: 1. Ross Carlyon (24 models) 2. Justin Hogg (12 models) 3. Matt Lyons and Len Bowen (8 models each). It would be remiss of me not to also list the winners of each month's People's Choice voting, which are as follows: October 2015: Mike Nelmes, 1/72 DH.88 Comet diorama November 2015: Ray Seppala, 1/72 scratch-built Dassault Falcon 900 December 2015: Matt Lyons, kit bashed Airfix/Revell 1/72 Halifax B.III January 2016: Mike Nelmes, RS Models 1/72 XP-38 Lightning February 2016: Len Bowen, Airfix 1/72 Air Sea Rescue launch March 2016: Dave White, Accurate Miniatures 1/48 TBM Avenger April 2016: Mario Marangoni, 1/35 '1945' diorama May 2016: Shane Davis, Matchbox 1/48 Skyraider July 2016: Peter Morgan, Bronco 1/35 Comet

Remember that at next month's AGM we'll be voting on each of these monthly winners to decide the overall People's Choice winner for 2015-16 - so winners, please remember to bring your models along for voting (although they're still eligible if you can't bring them), and everyone else get ready to take another look at the society's most popular and well-made models of the year!

Fancy spending a day at the Mantra on Northbourne Avenue in Canberra building models, well we did and had a

Great time. Many thanks to Peter Davis, and Chris Leeman and for organising the inaugural event and Mario

Marangoni for providing such a great venue.

There are plans to have another build day later in the year so look at for the date and times. I for one totally

enjoyed the day and look forward to the next event.

So how did we do at EXPO 2016?

Every second year a group of like-minded modeller’s from the ACTSMS hire a bus and travel down to Melbourne to

participate in the Scale Model EXPO, and whatever else

we can get away with. This was the 4th and or 5th time the

group had ventured southwards.

On the modelling front this year proved to be very

successful with the following places and awards taken

back to Canberra.

ACTSMS Publicity Officer

I have three main tasks:

Increase Membership and club meeting attendance

Increase ScaleACT attendance and model contribution

Encourage ACTSMS to be a comfortable place to enjoy our hobby

Initially I began working on a media plan to create a formal document of what ACTSMS is. This was key for me, as I

needed to gain a solid understanding of what we do. The document is now Four pages of bullet-points, covering

the many parts of ACTSM that the Publicity Officer has in interest in. These include:

Communication Methods available to us

Friendly businesses and groups that we have a positive relationship with

Media Goals

Social Media Strategy

Media Plans that adhere to our Goals and overall Strategy

A key phrase for me to help communicate if something is able to be used by the Publicity Officer or not is “A

feather in our cap”. Obscure phrase, but it clarifies if something we are doing is a feature that can be used to

promote ACTSMS. For example, the fact that our members get discounts at various model shops is a feather in our

cap. It is a feature that we can use to show that ACTSMS membership is worth getting.

Tangible achievements are important, all the strategies and documentation in the world means nothing to me

unless we are actually doing something useful. The Committee is full of motivated people who love our hobby and

put in a lot of thought about what to do, and how to go about doing it. Sometimes the Publicity Officer’s role is to

lead the way, at other times it is to encourage, sometimes it is just to promote discussion, and often it is to

advertise.

As the formalisation of the Media Strategy has now matured a little, the fun stuff is in sorting out the work to

adhere to our strategy. Since agreeing to perform the role of Publicity Officer in January, I have:

Formalised the goals of Publicity Officer

Formalised our Media plan, ongoing development

Encourage Blitz Build to be run and BB FB page to be reactivated for 2016

Encouraged ACTSMS shirts for members to be investigated and subsidised

Created “How To” document for members on how they create their own album on our FB page

Encouraged Club History and identifying old newsletters and photos

Encouraged members to upload pictures of old club stuff in preparation of our 45th Anniversary

Attended DCO, gained positive feedback from the DCO organiser

Proactively used The Grail competition to increase interest with VW peoples

o Attended Vee Dub Club meeting to promote ScaleACT

o Attended VW club events to promote ScaleACT

o Promoted The Grail within ACTSMS to help build more VW Bugs

Created youtube scripts to promote ScaleACT and club

Encouraged ACTSMS to buy a photo booth and use it at meetings to capture pictures of our monthly

meeting models

Discussed options for Twinning - Skype sessions, blitz build too

Encouraged Skype Conference Call for build day at Mantra with Ottowa and Farnborough

Encouraged discussion about limitations on models we accept for ScaleACT

Donated Tamiya 1/35 VW Beetle to April raffle to encourage Grail.

Created a flyer for ACTSMS for use throughout the year

Delivered flyers for ACTSMS and ScaleACT to various events, including Wagga and IPMS NSW model shows

I need to build more models. However, I feel that it is worth spending the time to set up this infrastructure. It will

make it much easier to maintain a coherent, focused workload over the long term for everyone who get the

opportunity to perform the Publicity Officer role.

A number of plans are ongoing, for example running Skype with our Twin clubs is achievable, but has not been

completed as yet. My ACTSMS Youtube scripts make me laugh, though I am biased. I expect to film them in the

next month, hopefully they will be hilarious once produced.

Moving forward, there are a number of plans I working on.

Our Grail subject this year is the VW Beetle, so I have been promoting this within ACTSMS, and also

externally with the ACT Vee Dub Club. If we can get more VW Beetle entries, I will be confident to get a VW

car show at ScaleACT. But I need more Grail entries before I will ask them.

ScaleCHAMPS is a new competition I am working on. Each year I want to change the model photos on our

website to new ones built by our members. The fine details are nearly defined, so this shall be announced

very soon

ACTSMS 45th Anniversary in 2017. I am extremely keen to make a big deal of this. Any photos, newsletters,

logos, old models, flyers, etc that we can collect over the next year will help to create a great display for

next years ScaleACT. The time is now to check the attic and pull out old ACTSMS memorabilia!

ScaleACT 2016. The highlight of ACTSMS. Anything we can do to improve, make more efficient, promote

ScaleACT is the big goal. Currently my main focus is finding a Canberra celebrity to come along for a cameo

appearance. Humphrey B Bear I can get, can you help get a big celebrity to join in?

Your opinion is important to the Publicity Officer and to the Committee. Please contact me anytime, the best

option will be via email: [email protected] We value your contributions, and encourage all feedback.
