    Connected and Separatedness

a.k.a Autonomy vs. Connectedness theres a natural desire for a CLOSE and PERMANENT bond in our

    relationships

but a relationship cannot endure unless involved individuals spend some timeALONE

    - all humans need AUTONOMY and INDEPENDENCE

too much bonding and connection leads to IDENTITY LOSS

    CONNECTEDNESS AND SEPARATEDNESS (concept map)

    Concept map

    - a simple application of the axiom.

    - axiom can most likely be applied to a romantic relationship

    - concept map explores the possibilities of a couples relationship basing on the axiom.

Just right: Each person has their me time. They respect each others differences butat the same time has their share of sacrifice to their individual autonomy. They provide

each other the space that each other needs.

Too clingy: One or both of them have minimal or no me time. There is too much

connection between the two. Individual identity is lost. One or both of them is too

    dependent to the other.

Too distant: One or both of them have too much me time. There is too little

connection between the two that its even weird to call it a relationship. May happen

when one or both of them values too much their individual autonomy. One or both of

    them is too individualistic.

    a.k.a. Novelty vs. Predictabilty

to maintain relationships, STRUCTURE and STABILITY is needed

PREDICTABILITY gives a sense of ASSURANCE

But a relationship in which nothing out of ordinary takes place is a BORING one.- MONOTONOUS

relationships need a SPICE of Variety that comes from:-novelty

    - mystery

    - spontaneity

tension begins when the relationship struggles to avoid monotony while it triesto maintain order

    a.k.a. Privacy vs. Transparency

relationships grow closer and stronger when involved individualsSHARE INFORMATION- pressure partners to be TRANSPARENT and REVEAL extensive, personal

    information

B U T this conflicts with each individuals need for PRIVACY

    - this just says that intimacy in a relationship is NOT a straight-line path

The amount ofdesired disclosure creates a relational tension
