3.5 Wiring cable to intermediate terminal boxWhen the SC100 conductivity converter is too far to connect directly to the conductivity sensor, use theWTB100 or BA10 terminal box and WF100 or WF10 extension cable connect them, following the section3.4.1.
3.6 Output Signal Cable Wiring
WARNING
To minimize the danger of shock, cut the power supply to the converter before connecting or discon-necting wires of output signal to an instrument such as a recorder.
The output signal wiring from the SC100 converter connects to recorders or the like. Use two-core shieldedcable for this wiring.
(1) Connect output signal cables to the terminals. Be sure to use the recommended terminal and be surethat they are the correct size for the cable copper core diameter.
(2) As shown in Figures 3.5 and 3.6 of Section 3.3, ground to earth and ground connection at one pointonly.
3.7 Contact output wiring.3.7.1 Wiring when S1 is used
A terminal cover plays a role in reducing the risk of electric shock when power is applied. When connect-ing contact output wiring, loosen the two screws to remove the cover. After completing the wiring, fix thecover again.

3.7.2 Wiring for S2 (for two-contact-output specification) or S2, S3 and S4 (for four-contactoutput specification)
A terminal cover is fitted to reduce the risk of electric shock when power is applied. When connectingcontact output wiring, you need to loosen the two cover screws to remove the cover. After completing thewiring, take care not to forget to replace the cover.
(1) If you want to connect a load which exceeds the contact rating (voltage rating 240 V AC, currentrating 3A resistive load, 30 VDC 3A resistive load) then you need to use a slave relay as shown inSec. 3.7.1.
(2) If switching a very small current, then – if possible – connecting a bleeder resistor in parallel with therelay (or the like) that is the load, can improve contact reliability.
(3) If you connect an inductive load like a solenoid valve or slave relay then in parallel with the contactsyou should connect a CR filter (when switching AC) or a diode (when switching DC), or contact lifemay be affected. Contact life is typically at least 10,000 switching operations with a resistive load.
(4) Use the recommended terminals to terminate connecting cables, and make sure that they are thecorrect size to match the cable core diameter.

6.1.2 Cell Constant
The default cell constant value is 1.00 cm-1. Before use, change to the cell constant value to the conductiv-ity sensor to be used, as described in Sec. 6.1.1.
6.1.3 Cell Constant Retention
The cell constant stored in the conductivity converter is retained even when power is turned off. If theassociated conductivity sensor is changed or replaced, then the cell constant in the converter must beupdated accordingly.
6.2 Temperature Compensation SettingConductivity is affected by solution temperature changes, typically the conductivity change 2% per °Cchange. This percentage change depends on solution composition, and measurement temperature span. Thecoefficient represents the % change in conductivity for a 1°C temperature change. Many applications must monitor or measure the concentration change of the solution. For this reason, temperature compensation is meaningful. Table 6.1 shows temperature compensation coefficients for NaClsolution.

6.2.1 Determining Temperature Coefficient
If the temperature coefficient of the solution to be measured is not known;(1) Start by setting the coefficient to zero(2) Measure the variation in conductivity over a range of 10 to 30 °C (versus a standard temperature of
25°C)(3) Derive a temperature coefficient using the following equation:
Temperature coefficient :
K1 (t2 25) K2 (t1 25)K2 K1 100 (% / °C)
F6.2.1-1E.eps
where t1 , t2 : liquid temperature ( °C) K1 : conductivity at temperature t1 K2 : conductivity at temperature t225 : Standard temperature ( °C )
Calculation example:Derive a temperature coefficient for a solution with a conductivity of 124.5 µS/cm at 18.0 °C, and147.6 µS/cm at 31.0 °C(Standard temperature is 25 °C). Substituting t1 = 18.0, t2 = 31.0, K1 = 124.5, and K2 = 147.6:
 =124.5 (31.025) 147.6 (18.025)
147.6124.5100

6.3 Compensation for Wiring ResistanceThe SC100 is wired to a conductivity sensor, and the wiring resistance depends on the cable lengthbetween the converter and the sensor. This total cable lenght must not exceed 50 m (max.).To measure conductivity accurately, the wiring resistance of the cable must be taken into account (thevalue needs to be set in the converter). The wiring resistance also needs to be taken into account foraccurate temperature calibration. Wiring resistance setting and temperature calibration need to be performedonce when a new sensor is installed.
6.3.1 Setting Wiring Resistance
The wiring resistance settings for different lengths of cables provided with Yokogawa’s SC10XB andSC4A, SC4AJ conductivity sensors are shown in Table 6.2 below.
Table 6.2
T6.2E.EPS
Cable length SC10XB SC4A, SC4AJ
3 m 0.60 0.00
5 m 1.00 0.05
10 m 2.00 (*1) 0.20
20 m 4.00 (*1) 0.50
50 m 10.00 (*1)
(*1) When cable is used with WF100, setting of wiring resistance will be
value of (0.2 x Total cable length m).
The resistance setting corresponds to the item Cb.r of otHr (Other Parameter Settings) in Sec. 5.1.3 (3).To minimize measurement error, you should measure the return resistance, subtract 0.1Ω from it, and setthis value.
6.3.2 Temperature Calibration
For best results, use a solution at or about the process temperature. A thermometer should be prepared forgetting accurate solution temperature data. The procedure for temperature calibration is described in “Sec.5.1.3 (3) Other Parameter Setting screen tCL (temperature calibration)”. Immerse the conductivity sensor(up to the level of the electrode to be wetted during operation) and the thermometer in the solution to beused for temperature calibration.Allow the sensor to stabilize in the the solution before reading and setting the value.Temperature calibration can be performed in the range -15 °C to +115 °C, and adjustements of -20 °C ofthe reading up to +5 °C above the reading. The difference between the temperature measured by the conduc-tivity sensor and the thermometer reading.
6.4 Zero Calibration (Calibration in Air)The SC100 is wired to a conductivity sensor, and the capacitance of the cable is proportional to the cablelength between converter and sensor. For accurate conductivity measurement, cable capacitance needs tobe compensated for. This cable capacitance has a particularly large effect on accuracy when measuringlow conductivity values, and the purpose of the zero calibration (calibration in air) described below is toeliminate this error.

6.5 Calibration with Standard SolutionWhen the SC100 Conductivity Converter is used with a conductivity sensor, it is normally sufficient toenter the cell constant marked on the sensor cable once. However if the sensor becomes aging or deformeddue to many-year use, the cell constant may change, resulting in errors. In this case, wash manually theelectrode, calibrate it with standard solution, and re-set the cell constant in the converter.
There are two common methods for calibration. The first method is to calibrate the converter to a known conductivity solution. These solutions are avail-able from laboratory supply companies; Table 6.3 is an example of some conductivity solutions. Seesection 6.5.1 for detailed explanation and procedure.A second method is to take a grab sample using an independant conductivity meter and then adjust theSC100 to this value. See section 6.5.2 for detailed explanation and procedure.

(2) After washing the electrode in pure water and wiping it off, immerse the sensor in standard solution.(3) Press SET/ENT key. The Aux. display shows “CAL”, blinking (meaning start calibration).(4) Press SET/ENT key. The measured value is displayed, blinking. The Aux. display shows “CAL”.(5) Wait for measured value to stabilize, then press SET/ENT key.
The measured value display shows measured value with decimal point blinking. The Aux. display shows “CAL”.
(6) Set decimal point position with and keys.By pressing or key, you can move the decimal point.
(7) If you press the SET/ENT key, the lowest digit of the measurement value blinks.(8) Set conductivity value with or key.(9) Press SET/ENT key and measurement panel blinking stops. “Ent” is blinking on the smaller screen.
Note) At this time, the calibrated value has an effect on measurement value, but isn’t memorized. Ifyou desire to repeat this calibration stage with the standard solution, press and key simulta-neously.
(10) Press SET/ENT key (settlement of calibration data).“Goo” blinks on the Aux. display. The calibration results are written to EEPROM
(11) Press SET/ENT key. -> the converter moves to “CAL” stage in item (1) by this operation.(12) Set the original temperature compensation and standard temperature before calibration with
standard liquid. Unless they are set, the converter remains compensating the measurement value forNaCl solution. Refer to Temperature Compensation and Reference Temperature setting items in Sec.5.1.3 (3) Other Parameters.
(13) After set the sensor to the original place, press key for 3 sec. and measurement screen isdisplayed.
