The SC Carousel Dehumidifying Dryer produces hot, low-dewpoint air that removes moisture from hygroscopic plastics. Thedryer pulls warm, moist air from a drying hopper and pumps itthrough dehumidifying desiccant. The dryer then heats the airto the drying temperature you selected and circulates it throughthe material in the hopper.

The dryer’s three-tank, closed-loop design ensures a continuoussupply of hot, dehumidified air while preventing contaminationfrom moisture in the plant.

The SC dryer can be used successfully in applications that require:

 A contamination-free drying environment. Drying temperatures of 150° to 375° F (66° to 191° C). Throughput rates of 15 to 112 lbs (6.8 to 50.8 kg) per hour. Dew points of -40° F (-40°C).

If you are drying material at temperatures over 250° F (121°C),you will need the high-temperature package that includes anaftercooler.

The SC Carousel Dryer achieves continuous, closed loop dry-ing by passing air simultaneously through two heaters andthree tanks of molecular sieve desiccant.

DESCRIPTION 2-3UGD016/0700 SC Carousel Dehumidifying Dryer

HOW IT WORKS

The Process (Drying) CycleThe process blower pulls moist air from the topof the drying hopper. The air passes through theprocess filter and aftercooler into the dryer’sdesiccant tank, where moisture is removed. Thenow-dry air moves through the process heater, where it is heated to the drying temperatureselected by the operator. The hot, dry air is deliv-ered to the hopper, where a spreader cone evenlydistributes the air through the material.

The Regeneration CycleThe regeneration blower pulls airthrough the regeneration filter into thedryer’s regeneration heater. The air isheated to 380° F (193° C) before it ispushed into the “wet” desiccant tank. The hot air purges moisture from thedesiccant. The moist air is blown outthe exhaust at the back of the dryer.

The Cooling CycleA regenerated desiccant tank mustbe cooled to the drying temperaturerange before it is moved back intothe process cycle. The processblower pushes a small amount of airthrough the regenerated desiccanttank. The cooling air then passesthrough the aftercooler and repeatsthe circuit.

The CarouselThe carousel indexesevery 15 minutes, moving a desiccanttank through threecycles in 45 minutes.

The SC Dryer is easy to install, if you plan the location andprepare the mounting area properly.

Make sure the mounting area provides:❒❒ A grounded power source supplying the correctcurrent for your dryer model. Check the dryer’s serialtag for the correct amps, voltage, phase and cycles. Fieldwiring should be completed by qualified personnel to theplanned location for the dryer. All electrical wiringshould comply with your region’s electrical codes.

❒❒ A source of water, if you have an aftercooler. The SC dryer’s optional aftercooler can use tower, city orchiller water at temperatures of 70° to 90° F (21° to 32°C). Pipe should be run to the planned dryer location. Useflexible hose to connect the water pipes to the aftercooler.

❒❒ Minimum clearance for safeoperation and maintenance. We recommend at least 25 inches(63.5 cm) clearance above the dryer forremoving the carousel housing. Youshould maintain 24 inches (61 cm)clearance on at least three sides of thedryer. If the dryer is mounted with ahopper on a processing machine throat, clearance between the dryer and hop-per can be 4 inches (10.2 cm).

❒❒ A mounting surface that will support the weight ofthe dryer, support frame and a fully-loaded hopper, or justthe fully-loaded hopper. See the specifications tables forweights and volumes.

❒❒ Material and conveying lines installed. If you planto use vacuum or compressed air loaders to fill the hop-per, install conveying lines to the drying hopper location.

Drill and tap mounting holes or make adapter.Available discharge assemblies and slide gates fit mount-ing surfaces with these bolt patterns and diameters:

Alarm

The RTD probe atthe drying hopperinlet sensed that theactual drying tem-perature is more than20° F (7° C) higheror lower than the set-point.

WARNING:Only qualified electri-cal service personnelshould examine andcorrect problems thatrequire opening thedryer’s electrical enclosure or checkingelectrical current todiagnose the cause ofa problem.

Possible cause

Are process air linesrestricted?

Is the dryer too far fromthe hopper to maintainsetpoint temperature ofthe drying air?

Is the RTD temperatureprobe installed correctly?

Is the process blowerrotating in the wrongdirection?

Did a process heaterelement fail?

Did a process heatercontactor fail?

Solution

Check the delivery air hoseand process filter. Removeblock age. Straighten crimps inhoses. Attach any loose hoses.

The dryer should be no morethan 5 feet (1.5 m) from thehopper. Move the dryer closerto the hopper, or insulate theair delivery hoses.

Verify that the tip of the RTDprobe is inserted into the cen-ter of the delivery air inlet ofthe hopper. Temperature read-ings will be incorrect, if thesensor touches the walls of theinlet pipe.

If the process blower is turningopposite the arrow stamped onits housing, reverse any twoleads connecting main powerto the dryer.

Using an ampmeter, check thecurrent in the heater elementwires. If the current is lowerthan indicated on the wiringdiagrams, replace the heaterelement. See REPLACINGHEATER ELEMENTS.

Disconnect power. Check thecontinuity of the contactor out-puts. If the ohm reading is zeroor near zero, replace the con-tactor. See CHECKING HEATERCONTACTORS.
