WALKS GRADING

Day Walk: A day walk means walking all day - the walks usually start at 8:00am and finish by dark. Often we have dinner

afterwards.

Weekend Walk: A weekend walk may start Friday night and camp at the start or early Saturday morning. On the first day, the party

usually gets to camp after 3:00pm and before dark, (hopefully). Happy hour occurs before dinner and is a time when

party members share ‘nibbles’. The next day’s walking could start between first light and 9:00am, usually 8:00 to

8:30am. We usually get back to the cars between early afternoon and dark. After dark finishes do happen, however

they are usually not planned for. Often a dinner is arranged at a venue on the way home.

THE GRADING SYSTEM The Grading System is shown at the bottom of each page and has 4 categories: (D)istance, (F)itness, (A)scent,

Italy - Dolomites, Italy Maps: Tabacco 1:25,000 N.030, 07, 015, 06, 022, 023 Expressions of interest are sought for walking the Alta Via 2 (AV2) in the spectacular Dolomites region of northern Italy. For a description of the AV2 see, for example, http://dolomitesport.com/activities/hiking-2/alta-via-two/. The AV2 starts at Bressanone (Brixen) and finishes at Feltre and guidebook duration is 13 days. This walk is scheduled for 16 days to allow for bad weather and diversions from the guidebook to include some challenging vie ferrate (plural of via ferrata). (See http://www.ukclimbing.com/articles/page.php?id=6918.) Distance is around 200km, with a daily average ascent and descent of about 900m. It crosses many interesting Dolomites groups including Odle, Sella, Pale di San Martino and Marmolada (highest in the Dolomites). Maximum walking altitude is around 3100m. Accommodation will be in mountain huts (“rifugios”) which serve full meals. This allows light packs with only day walk equipment required plus via ferrata gear. Cost of accommodation and food averages around €45 per day excluding drinks. The standard AV2 includes many “aided” sections where steel cables are utilised to help on steep terrain. This walk will depart from the standard route to include additional challenging vie ferrate. These should include the Sass Rigais, Brigata Tridentina (see alta-badia.org/en/sport-offers/climbing-and-mountaineering/brigata-tridentina-route.html), Piz Boe variant and Eterna vie ferrate. Participants need to be comfortable with big exposure: experience in rock climbing or serious canyoning is essential. Full via ferrata gear including helmets is necessary. The leader may be able to help source some such gear in Australia at reasonable cost. Party Limit. WALK FULL Grade: Varies from day to day and within days from M111 to L333E

Kosciuszko NP - Snowies Spring Weekend Maps: Perisher Valley, Geehi Dam Beg a day off work and take a spectacular spring long weekend in the Snowy Mountains! We'll drive down and make camp on Thursday evening, and on Friday morning we'll drive on to Charlotte Pass. From there plans have to be speculative as things will depend very much on the conditions. In an ideal scenario there will be a small amount of snow - just enough to be fun - and we'll have a look around the main range, possibly camping in the Albina region. It may be possible to visit Mt Townsend, the Sentinel etc. If there is hard ice on the main range this will be too dangerous and we'll stay down lower. In any case there should be no difficulty visiting the lakes, Snowy valley and/or Mt Kosciuszko. We'll aim to be back at the cars by lunchtime on Sunday to leave plenty of time for the drive home. Grade: M232-Q, could be harder or easier depending on conditions

Kosciuszko NP - Mt Jagungal area - peaks, huts and cascades Maps: mainly Jagungal, Toolong Range, Denison A 6.5 day ramble in the magnificent high country surrounding Mt Jagungal. Start at Round Mountain, visit Jagungal itself, south as far as Gungartan, and then back north to Kiandra. Route planning will be flexible, maybe even improvisatory, but we'll probably include some of the fascinating old huts such as Mawson's, Cesjack's, Boobee and Brooks. Possible side trips to Dicky Cooper Bogong, Mt Tabletop and the Valentine Falls. The route is likely to involve some off-track walking through the open Alpine plains. You will need to travel from Sydney to Round Mountain on 26 December in order to start walking on the 27th. We'll finish on 2 January (public holiday) with a short walk out in order to give plenty of time for the drive back to Sydney.

Southern Patagonia, Chile Maps: TBA A multi day walk in the Parque Nacional Torres Del Paine for the full circuit walk or the W circuit. The plan is to do the full circuit in 9 nights, weather permitting. After Torres Del Paine we will go to El Calafate for a day trip to Perito Moreno Glacier and then on to El Chalten for a few day walks in Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. We will travel by public transport and either be camping or staying in Refugios in Torres Del Paine and/or camping/hotels in towns. Expressions of interest are welcome. Party limit. Grade: M323

Fri 24 Feb -

Sun 26 Mar

Carretera Austral, Chile Maps: TBA A number of day and overnight walks along the Carretera Austral, between Coyhaique and Villa O'Higgins (500 slow k's). We'll hire cars to negotiate the trip and getting to walks, due to the lack or unreliability of public transport. I have a plan but what we actually do will depend on factors out of my control, such as weather, the

state of roads and boat or ferry availability. The plan includes walks of 2, 3 and 4 days to glaciers, lakes, mountains, ancient rainforests and semi-deserts, with spectacular scenery all round. We'll also take boats to famous glaciers and caves and check out other activities. Email for detailed notes.

Additional Expenses

TRAVEL: SBW recommends fuel travel costs are recovered at 30 cents per kilometre shared by all the occupants in the vehicle, including the driver/owner. Drivers may however suggest any amount they believe appropriate. There may be other expenses such as tolls & park entry fees. We encourage car sharing, it is environmentally friendly, helps with driver fatigue and it is a good way to get to know other club members. ABSEILING/CANYONING: On abseiling trips, fees may be charged for use of the ropes.

“Parks & Garden” Walks

Sydney abounds with lots of “green areas” and walking routes on formed trails, which Members can use to put on walks after work, midweek or on weekends. There are lots of guide books and websites with information on where to go. If these walks are of grades S111 or S211 then they do not have to be vetted by the Committee prior to publication. However, they must be led by a full Member, who is taking a first aid kit and mobile phone. Members can send their walk to [email protected] up to the Monday prior, for publication in the Short Notice Activity club-wide email, or for lead times under a week, a Member can advertise themselves by sending an email to [email protected]

Wed 15 Jun, 7:35pm - Social Evening: “Marie Byles Biography Book Launch”

As 'an heretic among the orthodox' Marie Byles was at the forefront of social change in Australia. In 1924 she

qualified as the first female solicitor of NSW. Told she could only work as a law clerk, she eventually established a

successful practice with 13 female paralegals. She fought for equal rights with feminist activist Jessie Street and

helped change discriminatory laws. An early member of the Sydney Bush Walkers and contemporary of Myles

Dunphy, Marie served as legal advisor to the Federation of Bushwalking Clubs and worked to save vast tracts of land

for national parks. In 1928 she travelled the world by cargo boat to gain experience as a mountaineer and climbed

Mt Cook. In 1938 she led an international expedition to Yunnan Province overland from Burma by mule train. When

injury curtailed her outdoor activities she returned to Burma to learn mindfulness meditation. The books she wrote

on Buddha’s life and teachings influenced a generation of seekers in the 1960s. The talk will be illustrated with

Marie’s own photographs taken on her travels around the world.

"The Summit of Her Ambition: the spirited life of Marie Byles" is the first biography of this remarkable woman. In it,

Anne McLeod relates Marie’s adventurous life and her passion for causes that remain relevant today: women’s

equal rights, environmental protection, and the spiritual journey. Anne has a background in the film industry, has a

degree in Adult Education and writes magazine articles on environmental themes.

range with many great photos.

David has led 7 trips since 1984. They have explored from Mt Sonder in the west to Simpsons Gap in the east. This
