President's Messageby Cindy Smith

There are a few quotes that I findinspiring:“The root of happiness is altruism - thewish to be of service to others.” - DalaiLama“The best way to find yourself is to loseyourself in the service of others.” -Mahatma Gandhi “The world tells us to seek success, power and money; God tells us to seekhumility, service, and love.” - PopeFrancis

Life has been especially challengingfor me this past month, and it istempting for me to look inward and getsucked into a downward spiral ofdespair and self-pity. There are

Page 4: SBHANA Fall 2018 Newsletter · Our Mission Statement: To improve the quality of life for people affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus through advocacy, education, and support

certainly times when a good cry istherapeutic and it helps to talk aboutour problems. However, I find that themost sure way for me to lift myself outof depressing situations and difficultcircumstances is to have an outwardfocus. Opportunities to help others areall around us. We can participate inorganized efforts, like the picture hereof my kids volunteering as part of afood drive for the Strathcona FoodBank, or look for our own opportunitiesto help someone else in need. One ofour SBHANA members had beenrecovering from their own surgery atthe U of A Hospital and when theylearned that I was at the hospital withmy son, Daniel, for his first surgery, they popped down to day surgeryrecovery to say hello.

The smallest acts of kindness canmake the biggest difference: beingpatient with an overwhelmed storeclerk, being understanding of anexhausted nurse, a kindly said hello orsmile, a positive comment or like onsomeone’s Facebook status. The keyis looking outward. Something magicalhappens as we forget ourselves andthink of others.

Best Regards, Cindy Smith, President

Program Manager - Danielle Schmidt

October has now graced us with her presence. Thechanging leaves are so breathtaking this time of year and italways just makes my heart so happy to see! As I take amoment to reflect back on the hecticness of summer, Irealize that I have now been working for the SBHANA forthree years now. Where has the time gone? It has been avery rewarding three years meeting all of you and getting toknow our SBHANA members better. We had quite thesuccessful fundraising summer with our smokie sale, sellingout all of our raffle tickets and having such a great Hope Classic event this year.Thank you all for making that possible!

I wanted to share a bit about my summer holiday to Vancouver Island. I haven'tbeen out to the Island since I was a child when we went there for BC Summer

Swimming Provincials, so it was like I got the chance to experience this beautifulplace for the first time. We were lucky enough to arrive at Parksville and Tofinoduring low tide... Wow, it was just mesmorizing to see all of the different sea lifethat was stuck in the tide pools and on the bigger rocks. We found starfish, sanddollars, jellyfish, seashells, gooey ducks, mussels, crabs, sea anenomes, and somuch more. It was like I had the chance to become a child again for a week andjust take in all of these wonders. "I'm still a kid inside, and adventure is adventurewherever you find it." ~Jim Dale

On behalf of Wheelchair Sports Albertaand its board, I would like to extend ahuge thank you to SBHANA for thegenerous donation in support of the2018 Alberta Sledge HockeyDevelopment Camp. Without yourfunds, this camp may have never run.We would have had to charge ourparticipants a significantly higherregistration fee to compensate for thecost of this event. This increase in costwould have been a deterrent for someregistrants. Some highlights of the week were ofcourse the amazing coaching team thatprovided high quality skill developmenttraining with two ice times a day for thejuniors and intermediates. We also hada great opportunity to accessmultisport wheelchairs to playbasketball, rugby, dodgeball, quidditch, tennis and more in wheelchairs! Thisweek was a great opportunity for ourparticipants. A lot was gained in termsof confidence and competence withfundamental and tactical skills. We are pleased with the event and arelooking forward to planning for thecamp next year.Kind regards, Jen Sales
