John BattisonJohn Battison, the founder and first President of the Society of Broadcast Engineers and a

Member of Chapter 52, died August 28, 2012. He was 96. John’s Membership number was #1.

John had many accomplishments in addition to founding the SBE and served as Chairmanof Chapter 52 at one time and served as Director of Engineering at WOSU in Columbus, Ohiofrom 1979-1985.

John lived near Loudonville Ohio. Funeral services were held on September 8, 2012 in Co-lumbus, Ohio. The SBE National Office has established a scholarship, the John H. Battison SBE Founder’s Scholarship, in John’s name Those wishing to make a contribution to the John H. Battison SBE Founder’s Scholarship Fund may send donations to: Ennes Educational Foundation Trust, 9102 N. Meridian Street,Suite 150, Indianapolis, IN 46260. Checks should be made payable to: Ennes EducationalFoundation Trust and write “Battison Scholarship” on the memo line.

The society will pay tribute to Battison, known as Member #1, during the SBE NationalMeeting in Denver, Colorado, October 23-24, 2012.

SBE UniversityNew SBE University Courses Available!

SBE University has online, on-demand courses on a variety of broadcast technical topics. With these self-study courses, youcan pick the topic, time and location to learn and complete it at your own pace. Each course is less than $100 for SBE mem-bers. Courses include a glossary, quiz questions an a final exam.

The SBE Education Committee is pleased to announce two new courses on SBE University. The first new course is Televi-sion Video and Audio—a Ready Reference for Engineers. This course is written by Randy Hoffner and provides the televisionengineer with a solid grounding in various aspects of video and audio for television and serves as reference to the pertinentstandards. The course is an overview of video and audio for television, from the dawn of analog television broadcasting to to-day’s digital television transmission. The cost of the course for SBE members is $99 and $139 for non-members. More infor-mation can be found on the SBE website.

The other course is The New Lifecycle of Media—IP and File Based Architecture and Workflows. This course is written byGary Olson and explores the technical considerations that need to be taken into account in a file based architecture, as wellas the changing roles and responsibilities engineers will have in designing and maintaining these new systems. The changesin workflow and business processes are also reviewed, as well as the new jobs and roles that are necessary in handling mediain this architecture. This course is also $99 for SBE members and $139 for non-members. More information can be found onthe SBE website.

2012 SBE National Meeting

The 2012 National Meeting of the Society of Broadcast Engineers takes place October 23-24 at the Crowne Plaza DenverInternational Airport in Denver, Colorado. The event is being held in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Audio/Visual Expoand the SBE/SMPTE Engineer’s Boot Camp. The local host is SBE Chapter 48 of Denver.

The SBE National Meeting will begin on October 23 with meetings of the SBE board and committee. On October 24, theschedule includes the annual Fellows Breakfast, Membership Meeting, and the SBE National Awards reception and Dinner.This year’s dinner is sponsored by the Telos Alliance. The membership meeting will be streamed live via the Internet to mem-bers of the SBE around the world. Tickets to the reception and dinner are $15 and can be ordered when registering for theRocky Mountain Audio/Video Expo (AVX). One of the many activities that those attending the SBE National Meeting will have to take part is the Engineer’s Boot Camp presented by SBE Chapter 48 of Denver on October 24. Chapter 48, which operates jointly with the Rocky Mountain sectionof SMPTE, will present a day of technical sessions for broadcast engineers. This year’s theme is “Back to the Basics” and will include topics such as ,an audio primer, fundamentals of project management and reliability engineering.
