New Mexico Youth Organized (NMYO) is a community‐based organization devoted to improving the lives of working families in our state. Through engaging 17‐34 year olds in the civic process our mission is to inspire the next generation of leaders in New Mexico. SANTA FE – Senate Bill 318, Development Funds for Green Jobs passed the House of Representatives on a vote of 61 to 1, Wednesday night. The “green jobs bill,” sponsored by Senator Eric Griego, has successfully passed both chambers of the New Mexico Legislature and now heads to Governor Richardson’s desk for his consideration. Senate Bill 318 is designed to help small environmentally friendly businesses relocate to New Mexico by giving them incentives through the Job Training Investment Fund (JTIP). If Governor Richardson signs the bill, JTIP could be used to reimburse these eco‐friendly businesses for the cost of training local workers. The JTIP mechanism is used to drive economic development in urban and rural areas of the state by making it economically feasible for green companies to operate. “By investing in green jobs we can provide clean energy for New Mexico and at the same time create thousands of jobs. These jobs will help working families that are struggling during tough financial times.” –Senator Eric Griego “New Mexico is blessed with an abundance of renewable energy resources. Creating a green economy with green jobs can be realized with a trained and skilled workforce. With this effort we are creating incentives for start‐up businesses to create jobs for all New Mexicans.” Speaker Ben Lujan “Senator Griego’s bill will attract green businesses to the state and encourage them to hire local residents for well‐ paid, dignified jobs. This simultaneously helps the environment, increases the employment rate, and improves the economy. Ultimately, this is good for people and the planet.” ‐ Vien Truong, Senior Policy Associate at Green For All. The Green Jobs bills are designed to build the infrastructure necessary to meet federal requirements for the 2009 Stimulus package. By passing this bill, members of the New Mexico Legislature have taken an important step to help bring federal dollars to the state and develop a sustainable workforce. New Mexico Youth Organized, Green For All, Conservation Voters NM, New Energy Economy, the Coalition for Clean Affordable Energy, Natural Resources Defense Council and 1Sky have been working on the green jobs issues for over a year and are committed to bringing clean, sustainable energy to New Mexico.
