flying times from international destinations to Johannesburg

South Africa - closer than you think

Getting to South africa is very simple. there are many international daily flights and direct connections to or tambo international airport in Johannesburg from all corners of the globe. flights from europe are generally overnight and just a sleep away - an aperitif, dinner, sound sleep, and a good breakfast - and voila, you’re in South africa! the direct flights between the uSa and Johannesburg are about 15 hours, and flights between london and Johannesburg take about 12 hours. travellers can also take an overland tour from most countries in eastern and Southern africa down to South africa.

A bit of geography

South africa has three capital cities. Pretoria is the administratrive capital, cape town the legislative and Bloemfontein the judicial capital.

throughout the year, South africa is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean time, 1 hour ahead of central european winter time, 6 hours ahead of eastern Standard Winter time (uSa) and 7 hours after australian central time.

South africa is 1.2 million square kilometres or roughly 5 times the size of Great Britain and 3 times the size of texas.

South africa has 2 798km (1 726mi) of coastline.

South africa’s lowest point is 0m (0mi) at the ocean. the highest point is Njesuthi in the Drakensberg at 3 408m (2 118mi) above sea level.

People of South Africa

South africa has a population of roughly 50 million classified into four ethnic groups - Black (77%), White (11%), coloured (9%) and indian 3%. the Black african majority is not culturally homogenous and ethnic variations occur. the white population of South africa are mostly english and afrikaans speaking, afrikaans being the language of Dutch setters. “coloured” is the term used to describe people of mixed race. indian settlers first arrived in South africa in the late 1800’s to work on sugarcane plantations in KwaZulu-Natal and indian culture has a strong influence in the area, particularly in Durban.

the majority of South africans are christian (68%) and almost 30% continue to follow indigenous faiths with beliefs in the ancestors.

Will I be understood?

South africa has 11 official languages. english is the fifth most spoken home language (8.2%). however, english is widely spoken throughout South africa and visitors should not have a problem with communication or being understood.

GOOD HOPE STUDIES

South Africa is a beautiful country with a good infrastructure and rich in resources. However it also faces great challenges. Countless NGO’s are bringing great relieve to those in need, but they depend on local and interna-tional volunteers.

Choose one of many projects in social and conservation volunteering throughout South Africa. There is nothing more rewarding than helping those in need.

Add a language course if needed at our school in Cape Town and stay at our new student house!

Gorgeous weather

Southern africa is an all year destination. it enjoys a pleasant climate, with warm sunny days most the year. Summer runs from November to february, when most of the region is basking in warm to hot weather.

the eastern coastline is lush and subtropical with humid summers. Swimming and surfing here is a year-round activity. the southern coastline and the cape of Good hope have a Mediterranean climate with wet winters and hot, dry summers.

the great inland Karoo plateau, where rocky hills and mountains rise from scrubland, is dry and gets more so going north-west into the Kalahari desert. Winters are mild everywhere except in the higher country. there are frosts and occasional snowfalls in the mountain-ous Drakensberg and lesotho plateau.

Wildlife safaris

Your trip to South africa would be incomplete without a wildlife safari. the open plains, clear skies and grazing buck have always been an attraction for fascinated animal watchers. Most tourists go on safari hoping to spot one of the Big 5, lions, leopards, elephants, rhino and buffalo. But just as many have discovered that the more modest of South africa’s wildlife are equally enchanting. there are buck, giraffes and zebras that roam the plains. ostrich and meerkat live in the dryer Karoo. if you were to look down, perhaps you could spy a dung beetle hauling his load.

South africa’s wildlife is not limited to the land. hippos and croco-diles inhabit waterways and estuaries. Dolphins and sharks, includ-ing the Great White, are regular visitors to the coast. Whales make an appearance during the winter months from mid June to the end of october.

South africa has twenty national parks and numerous private game reserves. Winter (July to october) is a better time to view game when the vegetation is shorter and you can view more. Safaris are best en-joyed in an open-vehicle with a guide who will tell you more about what you see.

Popular national parks for game viewing:addo elephant Park for elephants•iSimangalisto Wetlands Park for hippos and crocodiles•hluhluwe-uMfolozi Park for rhinos•Kruger Park is the oldest and biggest game reserve•Pilanesberg is closest game reserve to Johannesburg•

History & heritage

South africa’s history has been turbulent, but South africans draw strength from the past. leaders like Nelson Mandela have been an inspiration. learn about his life, and the history of others, at muse-ums like robben island, the apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, the Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha and the District Six Museum.

Given South africa’s diverse culture and history and its spectacular natural resources and wildlife, it is not surprising that it boasts the eight World heritage Sites. they are:

cape floral Kingdom•isimangaliso (St. lucia) Wetlands Park•robben island•the cradle of humankind•ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park•vredefort Meteorite Dome•the richtersveld cultural & Botanical landscape•

So much adventure

South africa has the wonderful weather and beautiful landscape to thank for the abundance of outdoor activities on offer. there is really something to keep everyone busy.

the breathtaking mountains, forests and beaches are perfect for traditional activities like hiking, cycling and horse riding. But South africa is growing as an adventure destination and visitors can en-gage in activities that are more extreme.Southern africa now boasts the highest bungee jump, gorge swing and single drop abseil in the world. Why visit South Africa?

South africa has many warm and sunny days. it is just the right place to release some tension.

Nelson Mandela’s former home in orlando West, Soweto is now a Mandela family museum.

ing down a cable suspended high above the ground, is becoming a South african speciality. then there’s canyoning, tubing, quad bik-ing, skydiving and countless other thrills that can faciliate as many adrenalin fixes as the body can cope with.

South africa’s coastline is also a treat for water babies. there are countless surfs spots and just as many locals willing to share their knowledge with visiting surfers.

Kite surfing and wind surfing equipment is availabe to hire in the windier destinations. Divers can come face to face with a prowling shark, either in the cage or not. Sodwana Bay is a favourite amongst scuba divers and snorkellers for its unspoilt coral reefs, warm water and diversity of fish and invertebrates.

Rich African culture

there’s nothing better than meeting the people in the places that you visit and South africans can’t wait to meet you. if the country’s eleven official languages are anything to go by, it is very culturally diverse.

Some South africans have their roots in europe and india, but most have their roots in africa. Zulus, Xhosas, Ndebele and afrikaners are only some of the people you are likely to meet on your visit.

each culture is unique has a language and customs. People in the rural areas lead more traditional and simple lives that involve cer-emonies, celebrations, traditional healing and belief in the ancestors. Many still live in mud and grass huts. constrastingly, modern african music and funky fashions have grown from the hip culture in urban townships like Soweto.

Food & wine

South africans love al fresco dining. there are many fine restaurants that serve local and international cuisine and quality South african wine. vineyards have a long history of producing fine wines and many are on beautiful estates that, like most other places in South africa, welcome visitors.

Crafts

crafters come from all over africa come to South africa to sell their wares. Beadwork, pottery, basketry and carving continue to thrive. crafters are also using new materials to fashion their artwork - pieces of wire are moulded into the shapes of animals, flowers and even cars and cellphones. Beads add a splash of colour to the wire sculp-tures. Waste material like old telephone wire and plastic bags get recycled into fashionable accessories like handbags and earrings.

Language studies

english is one of South africa’s official languages and is the main language for business and the media. South africa is a great place to learn to speak english and there are a number of english language schools in beautiful and interesting places. over the past decade South africa has increasingly entered into the efl industry, and has become an extremely popular destination for english language travellers.

education South africa (eduSa) centres focus on the provision of english language tuition and arrange many tourist related services such as accommodation, excursions and the building of cultural links. eduSa is also committed to developing and guiding the growth of the english language travel industry in South africa and ensuring

that its members meet or exceed guaranteed minimum standards of professionalism and quality.

Volunteering & work placements

international students can also arrange internships in South african companies and gain valuable work experience.

Backpacking

Backpacking is a fun and exciting way to tour South africa on a budget. independent travellers can hop between hostels that are referred to as ‘backpackers’ in South africa. they’re like hostels, but are so much more. there are backpacker hostels in all major tourist destinations in South africa. Many of them are in great locations – in the city centres close to the action, in rural africa, on the beach, in the forest and in the mountains.

they are fun, comfortable and convenient. this may be africa, but you will be pleasantly surprised at the high standards set by our backpacker hostels. travellers are well looked after with comfortable shared or private rooms, kitchens, meals and travel desks that will conveniently arrange anything if you ask.

every backpacker hostel has a unique atmosphere. they are places where you can meet both South african and international travellers.

Tours and adventures

the popular way for independent budget travellers to get around South africa is by either renting a car from one of our reliable car rental companies, or taking the hop-on hop-off shuttle, the Baz Bus. Your choice depends your time in South africa and your budget.

if you don’t want the hassle of independent travel then daytrips, tours and open-vehicles safaris are a great way to see the country. overland trucking is a great way to explore both South africa and beyond our borders into other countries in Southern and east africa. there are a number of reputable companies that have routes to some of africa’s most captivating attractions.

finally, no trip to South africa is complete without some adventure and there are many adventure companies willing to help travellers get their adrenalin fix - bungy jumping, abseiling, shark cage diving...

Star grading

the tourism Grading council of South africa (tGcSa) is the only officially recognised quality assurance organisation for accommodation establishments in South africa.

operating as a business unit of South african tourism, the tGcSa’s vision is to implement a recognisable and credible, globally benchmarked system of quality assurance for accommodation experiences which can be relied upon by visitors when making their choice of establishment.

our 52 Grading assessors around the country are professionally trained and uphold the highest levels of integrity and operate along very strict conditions as governed by the Service Provider agreement signed with each and every one of them.

We have a host of accommodation establishments to cater for a myriad of travel requirements and budget. So, if you have more time to spare and are looking for a comfortable and reputable place to lay your head, try one of the graded Backpacker and hostelling establishments listed below.

in addition, we also have an online based customer feedback Mechanism, [email protected] where the travelling public can submit feedback on the quality of their experiences at graded establishments.

the consumer feedback we receive is kept on file for consideration when establishments renew their grading in the following year, as grading is a 12-month status, which has to be renewed annually.

to limit unfortunate experiences from happening, we encourage all travellers to also check the star grading of their preferred accommodation establishment on the tGcSa website www.tourismgrading.co.za to confirm the status of the establishment, prior to finalising their booking arrangements.

Travelling in Africa is awesome! It’s a total over-load of the senses. Colourful and larger than life, spectacular spaces, friendly people and legendary wildlife are just a few of the positives. But better than that, a trip to this fascinating and varied con-tinent will be a totally unforgettable experience. With unlimited adventures to be discovered, and a massive array of places to see and visit, making the right choices when you plan your trip to Africa is just as important as how you make decisions once you reach your destination.

Green travel in South Africa

Go on tours that are supporting communi-ties and conservation projects. these are the experiences that are truly authentic and give you a privileged insight of real africa.

these days being a ‘savvy’ traveller also means being a responsible traveller, and there are a lot of easy things you can do that will make a positive difference to the people and to the environments around you, as well as make your holiday even more enjoyable.

Here are travel tips for making the very best of your time in Africa:Preparation is everything. Before you leave for your trip, take the opportunity to learn about the local culture in the places you are visiting. learn some of the indigenous languages, or at least some the easy phrases. Don’t be afraid to try – it’s a good icebreaker.

Support local businesses wherever possible and make a point of sampling local food in the restaurants and bars. interact with people and share their stories.

Buy souvenirs from ethical traders and check that they do not come from endangered wildlife or unsustainable resources. haggle with humour, but pay a fair price for what you buy. the wages of informal traders are erratic, and they too have to make a living.

it is common courtesy to ask permission before taking photographs of local people. Smile and be friendly, but walk away if someone asks you to pay for photographs.

Be aware of your surrounding and refrain from having expensive possessions on display, especially when travelling in poor areas. Be mindful that crime exists everywhere around the world and remain casually vigilant so that you don’t become a victim.

Dress with due consideration to local culture and religion. look around you and observe. it’s easy to see what is acceptable. ask advice if you are not sure.

try not to give sweets to township and street and children. it is unlikely that they will have access to good dental care. Do not give money either. it exposes the children to exploitation.

Do not feed wild animals, and be respectful of their space – both for their sake and yours.

Be aware that africa is a water scarce region, and water should be used with care

Dispose of waste wisely and do not litter. South africa’s tap water is safe and clean in most areas, so refrain from buying plastic bottles except where absolutely necessary.

Most of all, travel with a conscience around africa. have fun, chill out and leave a small carbon footprint – but with a huge bank of happy memories.

and if it’s a lasting legacy you are looking for, there are many legitimate charities to choose from and get involved in. after all, it’s always good to have a reason to come back!

While the “Big 5” - lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and buffalo, are the biggest attractions, there are 114 species of reptiles, 507 species of birds and at least 140 other mammals to be seen. While the park can be explored on one’s own, we recommend you go on safari to get the most of the open vehicles and the knowledge of experienced rangers.

Panorama Routethe Panorama route, as the name suggests, has many panoramic viewing points of dramatic scenery. the route begins in Graskop, heads off to the lisbon and Berlin waterfalls and continues to God’s Window that has viewpoints that teeter on the edge of the wilderness. Bourke’s luck Potholes are erosion features caused by the swirling river. the route veers to the Blyde river canyon before returning to Graskop.

Adventure activitiesthe mountains and valleys of Mpumalanga offer much in the way of outdoor activities. hiking and moutain bike trails criss-cross the hills and the rivers and waterfalls are ideal of rafting, tubing and canyoning.

the Kingdom of Swaziland is the smallest country in the southern hemisphere and one of the only remaining african monarchies. Swaziland has strong traditions, vibrant cultural festivals and friendly laidback people. Swaziland is ruled by King Mswati and his many royal residences dot the countryside. Some Swazis still dress traditionally and live in thatch huts. the umhlanga, or ‘reed Dance’ is an auspicious ceremony in which maidens pay tribute to the Queen Mother.

Despite the simple and traditional lives Swazis lead, Swaziland has a functional infrastructure and is easy to get around.Swaziland is a country of scenic beauty. ezulwini, the ‘valley of heav-en’ is home to both the ‘royal Kraal’ and many tourist attractions, such as the National Museum, Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Man-tenga falls, and the natural hot springs at cuddle Puddle. ezulwini is also close to Mbabane and Manzini.

Swaziland has an expansive system of nature reserves and national parks for a country so small, and you can be treated to excellent close encounters with black and white rhino and elephant in some of these areas. aside from the wildlife, travellers can go horse riding, trekking, mountain biking and white-water rafting amongst mag-nificent mountain scenery, stay in rural communities and become completely immersed in Swazi culture.

a wide range of african crafts can be bought here - cheaply. the Manzini market and others sell basketry, beadwork, carvings, batiks, Picasso-esque paintings, and psychedelic fabric. then visit Ngwenya Glass, Swazi candles, Gone rural and Mantenga craft centre for more specialized crafts.

Lesotholesotho is known as the “Mountain Kingdom”. the high basalt ranges which make up lesotho’s highlands are well over 3000m and the people that live in these mountains have developed a unique culture. Many still live traditionally; expect to see men riding their sturdy Basotho ponies over the mountainous terrain, wearing the traditional garment, the Basotho blanket. the proudly independent Basotho people have preserved their identity despite their country being completely surrounded by their neighbour, South africa. for the visitor, a visit allows one to see spectacular mountain scenery, to engage with the warm and hospitable people, to go pony trekking and to drive some rough 4x4 routes.

the eastern edge of the lesotho ranges falls away into the South african province of KwaZulu-Natal in the famous Drakensberg mountain range.

hikes from coffee Bay wind along the coastline and over the hills to sea cliffs, caves and waterfalls. Depending on how gutsy you’re feeling, you can explore these caves or plunge into the sea from the heights of the cliffs.

the hole in the Wall, a dramatic arch in a rock column slightly out to sea, is only 7km away from coffee Bay. You can either drive there or hike along the coastal dunes to get there. a challenge once you get there is to swim out to the hole and climb the rocks to the top.

hogsbackthe town of hogsback nestles on the slopes of the amatola Mountains. the name of the town was likely taken from the shape of the three mountains which overlook the village. these stunning mountains are topped by rocky ridges which resemble the bristles on a hog’s back.

With its gorgeous forests, waterfalls, flowers and mountains, hogsback has an atmosphere of pure fantasy. rumour has it that

Jrr tolkein was inspired in part by the hogsback when he created the classic lord of the rings. there are a number of hiking trails that will take you into the forest and up the mountains and will lead you to waterfalls and beautiful views.

flora and fauna are abundant. there are species of bamboo and butterfly which are only found on hogsback’s mountains. all sorts of fungi and mushrooms add to the magical feeling. the prescence of delicate mosses and old Man’s Beard indicates extremely pure air, as only a small amount of pollution will kill them. extremely rare species such as the cape Parrot (only 300 left in the world) and Samango Monkey are seen daily.

other places of interest are the victoria and alfred Waterfront, the Gold of africa Museum, and the two oceans aquarium. the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in Newlands is the oldest and largest botanical garden in South africa with over 22 000 indigenous plants. the District Six Museum tells of the lively coloured community that lived in the suburb, dismantled in the name of apartheid in the 1970s. Dyer island is a group of islands about 8km offshore from Gansbaai. Geyser rock is a smaller island nearby. ‘Shark alley’ is a shallow, narrow channel between Dyer island and Geyser rock. Gansbaai rivals hermanus for land-based whale watching. Southern right whales can be viewed from June to December.

Marine Dynamics and Dyer Island CruisesMarine Dynamics Shark tours (MD) and Dyer island cruises (Dic) employ marine biologists, raising funds for the Dyer island conservation trust (Dict) and supporting crucial stud-ies of endangered or vulnerable species - Great White sharks, african penguins as well as whales and dolphins - in the greater Dyer island area in an effort to better understand and protect them.

MD and Dic use the time at sea to benefit the understanding of the marine environment and actively facilitate research. Biologists on board take hundreds of photographs every day adding to the database of identified individuals –sharks, whales and dolphins. MD is investing heavily into shark re-search and is redefining how the Great White shark is viewed.

Great White sharkscarcharodon carcharias is well-known for its large size, with some exceeding 6m in length and 2000kg in weight. they are one of the primary predators of the oceans and feed on fish, fur seals and seabirds, but humans are not a staple in their diet. Great Whites are ambush hunters. Scenes in false Bay of sharks taking prey by surprise from below are now famous.

Southern Right whalesthe Southern right whale is easily distinguishable by the callosites on its head, its broad back without a dorsal fin, and a long arching mouth that begins above the eye. they are generally seen in groups or in pairs performing aerial displays. Sailing – floating with the fluke raised in the air to catch the wind, is unique to the Southern right and is a form of play.
