Television has always had a bad influence on society’.

Television has always had a bad influence on society.

During the twentieth century television has been one of the most important influences on society. Television exists in nearly every country in the world and can be seen even in the poorest societies. In industrial societies such as Britain, over 95% of households have televisions. Television is a strong influence. Is it always for the good?

In my opinion television has probably had a bad effect on society as a whole. I feel this is the case for three main reasons. Firstly, television has always received its money from advertising or governments. This has meant that it can never be free of the influence of very powerful groups who have strong reasons for maintaining the present organization and power structure of society. Secondly, television programs are very expensive to produce and broadcast. Because this is the case it is always necessary to have as large an audience as possible and, unfortunately, a large audience is more interested in the Eurovision song Contest or The A-Team than in material that is genuinely educational or challenging. Finally, television is broadcast for too many hours. It stops people thinking and reduces everything to the same level. A disaster in Beirut of Belfast becomes as unreal as murder and death in a fictional program.

Television is not a bad thing in itself. However, I feel that in its present form it has always been abused, has always taken power from its audience and has created a violent, materialistic culture that has become dependent on the medium that created it.
