Appendix – Sources of Information:

Many of the photographs were taken while Becky and I were on a church history tour in 2005. Other sources are as follows:

Samuel Mulliner: The main sources of information were:

1) “Chronological History of Samuel Mulliner and His Families”, Lavon Brunt Eyring, 1976 2) “THE HISTORICAL RECORD - A MONTHLY PERIODICAL” Devoted Exclusively to Historical, Biographical, Chronological and Statistical Matters, edited and published by Andrew Jenson, Salt Lake City, UTAH. 1888. Pg. 348 under the chapter entitled THE SCOTCH MISSION. 3) “Samuel Mulliner Jr., A Pioneers Life” by David Hammond Allred, 1980

Other noteworthy sources are noted in the body of the text. Other sources where Samuel is mentioned are listed below:

4) Samuel Mulliner Missionary Journal – Utah Historical Society Museum in SLC 5) Alexander Wright Journal – LDS Church Historical Dept Archives in SLC

Information also from: -“The Life of Heber C. Kimball" by Orson F. Whitney pg. 276. -"History of the Church" Andrew Jenson Vol.3, Ch.9, p.91 – 93 , under the section "Kirtland Camp", Vol.3, Ch.23, p.347, under a mission call to Europe (Scotland), Vol.4, Ch.3, p.45; Vol.4, Ch.3, p.48; Vol.4, Ch.4, p.76; Vol.4, Ch.6, p.123; Vol.4, Ch.16, p.321, Vol.6, Ch.16, p.340, pertaining to work as a Seventy, to work in Illinois. Roberts; -“Times and Seasons” Vol 1 No. 5 March 1840, Vol 2 No.8 October 1840, Vol 4 No. 14 June 1843, and Vol 5 No. 8 April 1844. “Saints and Spinners” by Bishop David Craig of Scotland - Sue and Crista Cowan – Samuel Mulliner: That Mighty Oak, 2009

Easton Kelsey:

Two major sources of information on Easton were,

1) “A Synopsis Of The Life Of Easton Kelsey”, copied by the WPA’s U.S. Historical Records Surveyor program pages 1, 2, and 3. Some date and name discrepancies exists especially regarding when he was ordained an Elder. The text is in his own handwriting as typed by the WPA and 2) “Chronological History of Samuel Mulliner and His Families”, Lavon Brunt Eyring, 1976.

William Henry Deuel:

Two major sources of information on William were,

1) A website maintained by Jay L. Deuel, Jr. of Utah. 2) THE CITY IN BETWEEN”, by Smoot. Smoot’s information is from Thomas Q. Williams, the first mayor of Centerville, Utah. Thomas lost his mother early in life and was taken in by Osmyn’s wife, Thomas’ Aunt to raise. Osmyn Deuel had no children of his own. Thomas later acquired the family dairy farm from Osmyn still in his possession at the time of the book publication.

Solomon Saxton and Descendants:

Story compiled by genealogist Florence A.R. Saxton, edited by John Wyatt. All family group sheets and genealogies attached are by Florence.

Marker at the Theodore and Frances Turley home site in Nauvoo. Elder Turley was the missionary that converted the Mulliner family. It reads:

As part of the Latter Day Saint exodus from Missouri, the Turley family left Far West on April, 18, 1839. According to Theodore, ‘For the space of 13 weeks’ the family ‘never had the priviledge of sleeping under a roof.’ Upon his arrival in Nauvoo, Turley used logs and stones to construct the first house in Nauvoo built by a Latter Day Saint. Theodore was born April 10, 1801 in Birmingham England immigrated to Canada in the 1820’s and was converted to the church by Parley P. Pratt in 1837. While in Nauvoo, Turley owned a gun shop and other businesses. He served in the Nauvoo Legion as “general, captain, and lieutenant colonel. Theodore died in 1871 in Beaver Utah.

The sea gull, Larus californicus, was selected as the state bird of Utah by an act of the legislature in 1955. The gull is considered the state bird of Utah by common consent, probably in commemoration of the fact that these gulls saved the people of the State by eating up the Rocky mountain crickets, which were destroying the crops in 1848. Orson F. Whitney says that in the midst of the devastation of the crickets, "When it seemed that nothing could stay the devastation, great flocks of gulls appeared, filling the air with their white wings and plaintive cries, and settled down upon the half-ruined fields. All day long they gorged themselves, and when full, disgorged and feasted again, the white gulls upon the black crickets, list hosts of heaven and hell contending, until the pests were vanquished and the people were saved." After devouring the crickets, the gulls returned "to the lake islands whence they came." Aeronautic wizards, gulls are gymnasts of the sky, making the seemingly impossible appear effortless. They can appear motionless in midair by catching wind currents with perfect timing and precision while positioning their bodies at just the right angle. They are quiet birds, considered quite beneficial by agriculturalists, and are usually gentle creatures, exhibiting neither antagonism to nor fondness for man. The Eilza Avery Deuel, while living in their log cabin in SLC, fought the crickets while she was pregnant and stopped to give birth to her son. This is from State of Utah’s Wed page.

History of the Deuel Log Cabin: The home, 15 feet by 20 feet, was constructed of Douglas fir and Lodgepole pine brought from the mountains east of the city. The Deuel brothers could have built it or hired it out to be built. Its furnishings reflect the lifestyle of a prosperous pioneer family, complete with cast iron stove. Another log structure, adjacent to the log cabin, probably served as a blacksmith shop for the brothers. It is supposed that the Deuels had the frame of their cabins made for them and then the family would supply the finishing, such as windows, white wash, etc.. Their younger brother Amos helped in the building project as well. Osmyn, wife Mary, lived in the cabin from the Autumn/winter of 1847 through much of 1848, and later used as a militia armory. William, wife Eliza, daughters Minerva and Mercy Ann, and brother Amos are thought to have lived next door. (A second home in Salt Lake was also mentioned by family members but no record has be discovered to supply the details.) Eliza was living in this cabin or her won next door while 9 months pregnant. When the crickets came, she would go out and fight them off until the day she gave birth.

(The plaque on the pioneer log cabin reads:

"A pioneer home, one of the oldest houses in Utah. Built in October, 1847, by Osmyn M. and William H. Deuel, located north of the east portal of the old Fort, now Pioneer Park. In 1849 (Apostle) Albert Carrington bought and moved it to First North and West Temple. He presented it to his daughter Frances, when she was married to Zebulon Jacobs. In 1912, they gave it to the Church. It was moved to the museum in the Vermont Building and later to this site. Albert Carrington was assistant to Captain Stansbury during his U. S. Survey in 1840-50. Part of Stansbury's time was spent in this cabin."

Page 10: saxton history appendix

Our Ancestor Contributions to the Church – By John Wyatt 2009 - Page 224

Appendix It is likely when the Deuels moved out, they rented the home to other settlers. The cabin was sold to Albert Carrington in 1849, after which he moved the structure to 1st North and West Temple Streets. He also allowed Captain Howard Stansbury of the U.S. Army Typographical Engineers to spend much of his time in this cabin (1849-50). In 1852, Christopher and Maryann Riding and their five children were living in it. Bro. Carrington gave the home to his daughter Francis and husband Zebulon Jacobs. They lived in it briefly, and in 1912, gave it to the church. This historic pioneer log home has since been on display in Salt Lake City at the Deseret Museum (1912-19), on Temple Square (1919-76), and in the plaza located adjacent to the North side of the Genealogical Library (1984-present). The cabin was restored in 1985 by the Museum of Church History and Art under the direction of Don Enders to appear as it would have looked in 1847. Currently, this Pioneer Log Horne is furnished with antiques and reproductions from their era.) The records of Charles C. Rich Co indicate that some families had cast iron stoves with them. Since the Deuels were fairly prosperous, they probably had a stove. (Pioneer Life Revisited, Ensign, July 1986, 40)

Center across from Temple Square.)
