The first of January brings not only a new year but with it hope and the promise of spring. fter the shortest day (21st December) the days are growing longer and evenings are already beginning to draw out. ow at the start of February sunset is already an hour later at 16:40.All around us including right by my front door (so I can’t miss them) are signs of plants waking up again. lready green shoots have pushed their way up through the ground, bringing with them the promise of new life. The first of January also sees the beginning of the new Creme Egg campaign. Recently we found a picture of a creme egg stuff crust pizza. My family were spilt as to whether that would be a good thing or not. Some thought Creme eggs were too sweet anyway. Others thought it could work so long as the rest of the pizza was a sweet one. I suggested it would be more like a traditional

Cornish pastie, which was savoury at one end and then sweet at the other, a whole meal in one. This idea didn’t go down well. How ever “you eat yours” Creme Eggs and other chocolate eggs are used to help us remember the new life we are all given through Jesus’ death on the cross. There Jesus bore the punishment of our sins and dying in our place, so that we could all share in his risen life. A life where there is no separation between us and God. A life where we all have free and direct access to God (something we don’t have to the Queen). The promise of new life is open to all, we just need to accept it.In preparation for celebrating that New Life, people traditionally use Lent to press the pause button and take look at their own lives. This is often done through “Fasting” giving up something. Cancer Research UK invited people to give up alcohol for January. The point is not so much what you give up but rather the opportunity that doing so gives to evaluate our relationship with it.Welcome to the first edition of the Saxonwell Group Parish News. They say that endings are the start of new beginning, and in some ways that is the

case for the Parish News. With the change in Editorship (and once again can I say a massive thank you to everyone who has in anyway contributed to the Parish News) we have taken the opportunity to look at the purpose of the Parish News. One of it’s many strengths is that it is a local magazine by local people for local people and this is something we wanted to continue. As a newcomer to the parish the magazine was a wonderful source of information about what was happening, something which was important to keep. This also a new beginning for the magazine within these pages you will find some differences. Firstly we can now include photographs, and secondly we have decided to expand the readership across the whole of the four villages encompassed by the Saxonwell Group.Consequently it will be delivered free into every household, nearly tripling our distribution. We are looking forward to including articles from Allington and Sedgebrook. If you are willing to make a financial contribution to the running of the magazine, a suggested donation of £5 per year would be greatly appreciated.

Foston Christmas ServicesOn Friday 19th December some 40 villagers and friends came to church to sing hymns and carols. Village Carols has now become an established part of our Christmas celebrations and is an opportunity to come to church without a formal service. Hot drinks and mince pies were served after a most enjoyable sing song. The Crib Service with Christingle on Christmas Eve afternoon was very well attended with almost twice as many children as the previous year. The church was beautifully decorated with candles lit in the windows. When the children had their Christingle candles lit and the church lights were turned off the effect was very moving. The collection has been sent to The Children’s Society to help with their excellent work. Midnight Holy Communion was also well attended and we thank Revd Jacqueline Bell from Grantham who conducted our service for us.

Medical Centre News

The start of 2015 heralds significant change at Long Bennington Medical Centre with the departure of two long-standing members of staff. The Practice is to gain a new Practice Manager, Alison Lowerson at the beginning of February following the retirement of the current Practice Manager as she moves into the role of Finance Director. After nearly 40 years of service to General Practice, Dr Caroline Lawrenson has announced her retirement. She is to leave the Practice at the end of May and a new GP will be appointed in the near future. This will inevitably lead to changes to the

Practice timetable. We will do our very best to keep patients up to date with all the changes via the Practice Leaflet and our new website www.longbenningtonmedicalcentre.co.uk. Take a look at the new website and why not sign up for online services. Make appointments online and order your repeat medication. Our current opening hours are 8.30am – 6.00pm with extended hours offered on Mondays and Thursdays 6.30pm-8.00pm. “Every day we should hear at least one little song, read one good poem, see one exquisite picture, and, if possible, speak a few sensible words.” This advice came from the German writer Goethe about 200 years ago. I wonder how you would match up to it? Radio, photography and other technology have made songs and exquisite pictures much easier to come by, so I don’t do too badly on those. Others will have to judge the sensible words. But poetry?Poems have been on my mind this week. I get to visit quite a lot of people in my job. In those visits I have found that a small but significant number are quietly very creative: painting, needlework and, yes, poetry. One such poet was Derek Foster. Over the last weeks as I have felt the sadness of his death and struggled to make sense of all that led up it, I have also been able to raise a smile as I thought about his poems. On my desk is Derek’s ‘ten minute book’ of short poems. In it is expressed a love of nature and of beauty in all its forms that goes beyond mere description. The language of poetry is usually playful and surprising and makes us look at things in new ways. Feelings and ideas are invoked

that could not otherwise be described. No wonder the best way to talk about God is often in poetry. Many of the best hymns, old and new, work as poems, and language of much of the Bible is poetry. Sometimes it is these that can speak to us when nothing else hits the mark. So I’m going to finish with a piece of poetry. It’s the start of one of the most well known poems of all, and it means a lot to me:

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me besides still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and staff – they comfort me.

Maybe this month you too need to find a good poem.

Wishing you every blessingMark

Friday Night Talks during the Lent periodSt Swithun’s Church in Long Bennington is holding a series of presentations during Lent. Each is a stand-alone event designed to raise our awareness of current social and theological issues, to stimulate debate and encourage us to think more deeply about what we believe and how we might put that faith into action. Each event is on a Friday, will start at 7pm and the formal part will last for about an hour. The format will vary, depending upon each organisation. All will be welcome and we encourage you to invite family and friends.Friday 20th February: Open Doors, serving the suffering ChurchFriday 27th February: Lincoln School of Theology, mission and discipleship.Friday 13th March: Compassion UK, releasing children from poverty in Jesus’ name.Friday 20th March: Answers in Genesis, discussing a modern view of Genesis.Friday 27th March: Mission Aviation Fellowship, Flying for Life; using aircraft for mission and aid.

Lent GroupsLent is the time when we remember the forty days and forty nights that Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness when the devil tried to tempt him. To help us remember we often mirror his fasting by giving something up for lent. Many people give up chocolate or alcohol, occasionally putting the money that would otherwise of been spent, aside for a treat at Easter. If you would like to take some time out with God, just as Jesus did, then why not try one of our house groups. There are a re range of things happening across the churches, all the groups are friendly and everyone is always welcome to come along. Please give the group leader a call to check dates and times of the next meeting.Long Bennington: Daytime group Joy Jordan 281355 Meeting Jesus in the GospelsEvening group Harriet or John Orridge 281281 Looking at the Lord’s PrayerAllington Village group Norma Davies 281264 York Course

The meetings are fortnightly, beginning at 2.30pm. The next one will be at 2 Elm Close, Long Bennington, on February 3rd. Why not join us? Women’s World Day of PrayerThere will be a service for this year’s Women’s World Day of Prayer on Friday 6th March at the Methodist Chapel in Long Bennington at 7:00pm. This year’s service has been written by the women of the Bahamas, and asks “Do you know what I have done to you?” and is based upon Jesus washing his disciples feet. Whilst written by women, everyone is invited, and increasingly men and children are taking part.

The Bahamas is an expense of water with over 700 scattered islands, covering approximately 100,000 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean. Only a small number of the islands are inhabited. The two main islands are New Providence and Grand Bahama; the rest are called ‘Family’ or ‘Out’ islands. The most northerly island, Bimini, is

approximately 52 miles off the coast of Florida, USA and from the southernmost island of Inagua one can see the lights of Cuba and Haiti. The islands are very flat with Mount Alvernia (in Cat Island) as their highest point, a peak only 206 feet high. The largest island, Andros, is 104 miles long by 40 miles wide at the widest point. The Andros Barrier Reef is the world’s third longest after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and the Central American Belize Barrier Reef.

The Bahamas lies in the tropics so the temperature is warm for most of the year, with the hottest months (June to October) being subject to hurricanes. Do come and find out more about these islands and the lives of those who live there.

On Saturday members from all the churches in the Saxonwell group were invited to come and meet with the DDP advisors, building on the Mission day back in October. Over the course of the morning the churches worked together to create a new shared vision for the whole of the group. We believe that God is calling us together to live in a faithful and Christ-like way, reflecting his inclusive, healing and accepting love for all, by placing our churches at the heart of the local community.

The Holy Spirit was busy moving through the room, and there was a real enthusiasm as ideas were bounced around. Each church has now drawn up personalised five year goals, which for Allington includes making the church fit for the 21st century with loo and server. Improving communications is another favourite, and we hope that this new Parish magazine will go a long way to improving that.

“It was a very constructive, forward looking day which produced lots of great ideas.” Debbie Star

Valentine QuotesMarriage requires falling in love many times – always with the same person - AnonWhat woman, however old, has not the bridal favours and raiment stowed away, and packed in lavender, in the inmost cupboards of her heart? - William M ThackerayLife has taught us that love does not consist of gazing at each other but in looking outward together in the same direction - Antoine De Saint-ExuperyOh, if it be to choose and call thee mine, Love, thou art every day my Valentine - Thomas HoodA woman is a man’s solace, but if it wasn’t for her, he probably wouldn’t need any solace - Burns

The very first Valentine card - a legendThe Roman Emperor Claudius II needed soldiers. He suspected that marriage made men want to stay at home instead of fighting wars, so he outlawed marriage.A kind-hearted young priest named Valentine felt sorry for all the couples who wanted to marry, but couldn’t. So secretly he married as many couples as he could - until the Emperor found out and condemned him to death. While he was in prison awaiting execution, Valentine showed love and compassion to everyone around him, including his jailer. The jailer had a young daughter who was blind, but through Valentine’s prayers, she was healed. Just before his death in Rome on 14 February, he wrote her a farewell message signed ‘From your Valentine.’ So the very first Valentine card was not between lovers, but between a priest about to die, and a little girl, healed through his prayers.

Ride and StrideRide+Stride is a sponsored bike ride or walk in which people from all over the country walk or cycle between churches, exploring and enjoying the countryside. The money they raise helps to preserve some of Britain’s 47,000 churches, chapels and meeting houses which are at risk of falling into serious disrepair. In 2014 the Saxonwell Group was part of that fundraising mission. This year’s event will take place on the 12th

September so come and join in. Contact Harriet at [email protected] for more information.

Flower FestivalSt. Swithun’s Church in Long Bennington will host a Flower Festival from the 23rd to 15th May 2015. If you would like more details call Beryl Holmes on 01400 281437.

Light PartyThe success of the 2014 Light Party has prompted a repeat performance. This is to be held

on 31st October 2015 in St. James’s Hall, Long Bennington and welcomes all children up to the age of 11. We will bring you more details closer to the event.

Santa’s SleighThis year we raised a fantastic £916 for St Swithun’s Church and charities through Santa’s Sleigh, a fantastic result. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way, driving, repairing the sleigh, volunteer collectors, and to you all who gave so generously. Santa really enjoyed coming round the village seeing everyone dancing and waving. We’ve managed to get a priority booking into his diary for this Christmas again Santa’s sleigh is booked to visit Long Bennington on Sat 12th (North end) and Sun 13th December (south end of the village).

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever - Hebrews 13 V8New beginnings: Heavenly Father with Christmas and New Year celebrations over we start to think of the new beginnings. We notice the new shoots of spring bulbs peeping through the earth reminding us that your creation is all around and Spring is on its way. As this new magazine drops through our letterboxes help each of us to know we are part of a loving community and we matter to one another and especially to you.Gracious God we are very aware that for many, this year begins with sadness. In the love of Jesus comfort all who have recently been bereaved, and any who are experiencing a breakdown in relationships.Grant your strength to the sick and your peace to the anxious.February brings us St. Valentine’s Day, with thoughts of love and commitment. Shrove Tuesday is a time of feasting. Ash Wednesday when we begin to reflect on all you have done for us in Jesus Christ.Eternal Father as the year brings new challenges, changes, joys and sorrows may we be assured that your love for us remains constant. For you have given us your son, Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today and forever and He will walk this journey with us, guiding, protecting and sustaining us - our Lord, Saviour and friend.Amen Suzanne Hartle

What to do in the garden this month...

Trees and FlowersMove deciduous trees and shrubs provided the soil is not frozen or waterlogged. Plant bare root roses, choosing a sunny position.Prune Wisteria, cutting back side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds.Prune winter flowering shrubs after their flowering has finished and plant new ones. Lift and divide snowdrops after flowering if you want to move them or create more plants. Cut back the old foliage from ornamental grasses. Remove faded flowers from your

winter pansies to encourage new flowers.Cut back shrubs such as Cornus and Salix. At the end of the month prune summer-flowering Clematis before active growth begins.

In the veg patch and fruit garden…Build raised beds if your soil is heavy. The soil warms up faster and drains quickly. Force rhubarb for an early crop and plant new crowns now. Sow vegetable seeds such as leeks and onions under cover . Start chitting early potatoes and place them on end in a tray or egg box and in a bright, frost-free

place.Weed vegetable patch and dig in plenty of compost then cover with sheets of black plastic to keep it dry and warm in preparation for spring planting. Mulch perennial vegetables and fruit trees with well rotted manure or compost taking care not to mound mulch up around the trunk of your treesCut autumn-fruiting raspberry canes to the ground to stimulate new canes and cut the tips of summer-fruiting raspberry canes just above a bud.Plant raspberry canes for the coming summer.Prune apple and pear trees but leave plum and cherry trees until the summer. Prune blackcurrant, gooseberries and redcurrants bushes. Currant bushes can be planted between now and the spring.Sue Baggaley

Long Bennington VPA (Gardening Club) Christmas Social

The Christmas Social which was held on 25 November was lots of fun. The Lovedon Singers provided a cracking start with some marvellous singing accompanied by guitar, followed by a gardening quiz which was won by Bob Tufnell, and a fun creative cake decorating competition. With lots of delicious food and drink provided by members the festive indulgences started in style.

Next Meeting The club’s Annual General Meeting will

be held on 24 February at 7.30pm in St James’s Hall. The Committee will be elected, reports made and the programme for the year ahead discussed. After the business of the evening is done there will be a talk and some photos. Subscriptions, as previously agreed, will be increasing to £10 a year for 2015/16. Members should have received the agenda by the end of January. If you haven’t or if you would like to attend and are not yet a member contact Bev Gledhill and she will get an agenda to you. Bev Gledhill, Secretary on 01400 282239 or 07753 709513.

Foston Conservation Group

Parish Walk

A Village Walk is planned on public footpaths and bridleways around the Foston. The idea is to arrange a group walk around these paths so that those people who may not know these routes can give them a go with plenty of company, dogs (plus responsible owners!) and children are welcome too. The proposed date is Sunday March 22nd depending on the weather. Please keep an eye on the village notice board and future editions of the Parish News for more details.

Seed and plant swop

There are probably gardeners out there who find themselves with a surfeit of seedlings, seeds and cuttings in the Spring and the group is to hold a ‘Spring Plant Swop’ in early May so everyone can get together and dish out their surplus plants and perhaps try some new varieties passed on by neighbours. Again, further details will be available nearer the time but pencil in May 9th as a possible date. If anyone has a particular idea that they think may be of interest to the Conservation Group, please contact Janet Bray on 01400 282571 or [email protected].
