Hello and welcome to our first edition of 2017. I hope you all had a great Christmas and that Santa brought you what you wished for. I would like to wish you all a belated Happy and Prosperous New Year.

We are still looking for ideas for the magazine, so if there is something you would like to see in it do let us know as other people might be interested too.

If you are organizing an event in the either of the halls the magazine is a good place to advertise as every household in the village gets a copy. There are a couple of events coming up to help raise money for the Summer Show, so keep your eyes peeled for notices in the shop and other places.

If you are new to the village a big welcome, we hope you will soon settle in and make new friends. You will find lots of information in the magazine and there are important telephone numbers on the back. If you can't find what you are looking for ring me, Margo, on 480015 and I will see if I can help.

A message for anyone, old or young, crossing a roadWear something bright or white so you can be seen at all times

There have been a few near misses where drivers have not seen pedestrians crossing the A16 on misty or foggy mornings or on dark and dull evenings so:

ST LUKE’S CHURCHAdvent, Christmas and the New Year seemed to pass so quickly, perhaps because so much had to be fitted into just a few weeks;  there was excitement for some, people to meet up with, rich food to be eaten, and wine to help increase the merriment. Then January arrived, time to recharge batteries for 2017 as we return to routines, and continue to pray for more peace in the world.St. Luke's had increased attendances at the Carol Service and Midnight Mass.  All the money needed for the window restoration has come in, over £980.00 donated or raised by groups and individuals from Stickney.2016 Thursday coffee mornings raised a total of £1207.36.  The Christmas bingo raised £326.00.  The groceries donated to St. Luke's appeal through December have been delivered to Centrepoint. This is all GOOD NEWS brought about by local generosity, people giving in all kinds of different and positive ways, THANK YOU.

DOG FOULINGPlease help to keep Stickney free of dog poo! There are a number of nicely kept grass verges throughout the village, these are not for the use of dogs! Should your dog be ‘caught short’ then please remember to ‘bag it and bin it’.

Just think, if you walk your dog in a certain area then others will too. Please help keep the village dog poo free and a pleasant, safe place for everyone to enjoy.

PLEASE CLEAN IT UP!

Kiddies CornerSavoury pancakes with ham and cheeseWhy stick to lemon and sugar when these savoury pancakes can kick off a night of batter-based feasting? Flippin' marvellous!

For the pancakes 55g/2oz plain pinch salt 1 free-range egg 140ml/5fl oz milk oil for frying

For the cheese sauce 25g/1oz butter 25g/1oz plain flour 225ml/8fl oz milk 100g/3½ oz cheese, grated Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

To top 3 spring onions, finely sliced 4 sun-dried tomatoes in oil, drained

and chopped 80g/3oz good quality smoked ham

Method 1. Sift the flour and salt into a large bowl.

Whisk together the egg and milk in another bowl then, slowly pouring the liquid into the dry ingredients, whisk together until the batter is smooth. Set aside.

2. For the cheese sauce, melt the butter in a small pan, then whisk in the flour. Cook for one minute, then gradually add the milk whisking continuously. Bring to the boil and reduce the heat to a simmer for one minute until the sauce is thick and smooth. Stir in half of the cheese and season with black pepper.

3. To make the pancakes, heat a 20cm/8in frying pan until very hot, drizzle in a small amount of oil and tip the pan to swirl the oil around. Ladle in about two tablespoons of batter mix and immediately tilt the pan from side to side to get a thin, even layer of batter to cover the base of the pan. Cook for around 30 seconds until the underside is golden then flip or turn with a pallet knife.

4. As soon as the pancake is turned scatter over some ham, spring onions and sundried tomatoes. Spoon over some cheese sauce then top with a scattering of the remaining cheese.

5. Once you’ve topped the pancake the underside will be done. Fold the pancake in half then slip it out of the pan onto a warmed serving plate and keep warm under some foil while you make the remaining pancakes.

Gardening Tips for FebruaryAs I write we are being advised to expect a possible dusting of snow by the weekend, and certainly, at the very least, a cold snap.  It's very unlikely I shall be doing anything in the short term other than browsing seed catalogues and trying to catch up on reading some of the books I was given for Christmas. Here then, are a few jobs to be getting on with as the weather turns warmer, the days grow longer and we emerge from our winter hibernation.

1}  Deftely a job for indoors is chitting the potatoes.  Seed potatoes are in the shops and garden centres now, so spread them out as soon as you get them in a light place which will encourage plump green sprouts that wont be damaged when you plant them.  I've been recommended the early variety 'Lady Christi' or the salad type 'Charlotte'.  Start them in February, in containers and place them somewhere frost-free for the most worthwhile crop.

2}  Sow broad beans in pots indoors, ready for planting out in late March.  They should crop in June to July.  Peas do well when sown in a length of guttering indoors and then planted out once the young plants have established.

3}  On milder days try to open greenhouse doors or windows to let in some fresh air, as good air circulation will help prevent fungal diseases.  Remove any dead leaves and flowers you can find before they rot.

4}  Plant garlic before the end of February.  A soft necked variety such as 'Solent Wight' will produce small cloves that store well.  Alternatively, a hard-necked variety such as 'LautrecWight' or 'Purple Moldovan' will produce large cloves.  Plant 15cm apart in rows 30cm apart, with the top of the clove just covered by soil.

5}  You can enjoy the first crops of delicious carrots, courgettes and salad leaves a bit earlier by sowing them in large pots in the greenhouse during February.  As the weather warms up in time, move the pots outdoors.  Be sure to cover courgettes with fleece if there is a frost predicted.

Finally a word from Cicero who seemed to have summed up what constitutes happiness when he wrote:     "If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need."

Happy gardening.

Parish Council Jubilee CommitteeAt a meeting held on 24 November 2016 a vote was taken as to whether the Committee should continue to work under the Parish Council or to become a ‘stand-alone’ Committee without the restraints of the Parish Council ‘rules and regulations’. The vote resulted in a ‘stand-alone‘ Committee – Stickney Show Committee. A Constitution was presented, discussed and signed by the Chairman. When the Jubilee Committee was set up in 2011 to organise the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations £2000.00 was allocated by the Parish Council, this money has since been used for the basis of putting on a Village Fete in 2013, the Midsummer Festival in 2015 and the Stickney show in 2016. These finances have always been separate from the Parish Council funds and used for village ‘do’s. The Parish Council have agreed to give most of the money, keeping a small amount in the Jubilee Committee account to keep it open, to the Stickney Show Committee for the purpose of putting on Stickney show. It has been written into the Constitution that, should this Committee cease to exist, £2000.00 will be paid back into the Parish Council Jubilee Committee account for future village celebrations. Please support this Committee in its fund raising events and, of course, at the Stickney Show.Stickney Show CommitteeThe Stickney Show has a new organising committee! We are no longer ‘The Jubilee Committee’, a sub-committee of the Parish Council, but a group of people from Stickney who are willing to give up some of our leisure time to
