Select- Includes tools for map selection The select tools provide the ability to spatially select crash data points with drawn features.
Click the select icon to invoke the selection menu.
Select Target Layer and Select by Layer
Please Note: Select Target Layer and Select by Layer function is ONLY available when in
Advanced Mode.

3. Choose the type of selection method to use (Point, Line, Rectangle, Polygon, Circle, or Map
Extent). Draw/place the selection on the map.
4. Return to the Map Selection drop down menu and select ‘Crash Points’.
5. Select a layer from the Select Layer drop down menu. Click the ‘Select Using Map
Selection’ button.
6. Crash points that exists within the buffered distance of the layer selections will be displayed.
If the selection geometry is too complex, the system will return an error stating "The
Selection Geometry is too complex for query. Please reduce the number of selection
geometries and try again."
7. Optionally, utilize the Undo, Clear, Save, and Load options at the bottom of the panel as
necessary.
Select Point - Tool to make map selection with a single point
1. Choose the 'Select by Point' option.
2. Check the 'Buffer selections box.'
3. Input a buffer distance. Unit of measurement may be changed from miles to feet,
kilometers, or meters.
4. Select a single, or multiple single, point(s) on the map by clicking a point. System
provides data points on the map that match the selection.

Select Line- Tool to make map selection with a line
1. Click the 'Select by Line' button.
2. Check the 'Buffer selections box.'
3. Input a buffer distance. User may change unit of measurement from miles to feet,
kilometers, or meters.
4. Click on map to indicate the starting point of line, click for any additional points on the
line, and double click to complete the line selection.
Select Rectangle- Tool to make map selection with a rectangle
1. Click the 'Select by Rectangle' option.
2. Click a single point on the map: the system highlights a square around the point, and
provides data point results within that space.
3. Select a point on the map, click and drag to create a customized rectangle, release the
mouse when you are done: the system provides data point results within that space.
Select Polygon- Tool to make map selection with a polygon
1. Choose the 'Select by Polygon' option.
2. Draw a polygon by clicking for each point and double clicking to close the shape.
Select Circle- Tool to make map selection with a circle
1. Choose the 'Select by Circle' option.

2. Select a single point to click to generate a circle, or, click and drag to generate a custom
circle size.
Select by Map Extent- Tool to make map selection based on the current extent of the map
Choose the 'Select by Map Extent' button. System displays only the data points that exist
within that current view of the map.
Select by KML/KMZ File- Tool to upload KML or KMZ File to make spatial selections
Choose the 'Select by KML/KMZ File' button. System displays a dialog – Create
Selection from KML/KMZ. Click Choose File to browse to the location of the KML or
KMZ on the local workstation.
Select Buffer- Tool to add a user specified buffer distance to map selections
Check the 'Buffer selections box.'
Select Buffer Distance- Tool to provide the user the ability to input a specific buffer distance
1. Check the 'Buffer selections box.'
2. Input a buffer distance. User may change unit of measurement from miles to feet,
kilometers, or meters.

Select Buffer Units- Tool to specify the unit of measurement of the input buffer distance
1. Check the 'Buffer selections box.'
2. Input a buffer distance.
3. Click on the Unit scroll down menu. Choose a buffer distance unit of measurement from
miles, feet, kilometers, or meters.
4. Click on the desired unit of measurement.
Zoom to Map Selection- Tool that allows the user to zoom to the extent of the selections
1. Utilize any selection tool to select data results.
2. Click the Zoom to Map Selections button.

3. Map view will be adjusted to display the selected data results.
Select Clear- Tool to clear the previously input selections.
Choose the 'Clear Map Selection' button. Selection on map is cleared, map and data points
return to default.
Select Save- Tool to save the selections already made
Choose the ‘Save’ button. Enter a File name and select Save.
Select Load- Tool to load a previously saved selection
1. Select the ‘Load’ button. The Load Map Selection window will open.
2. Select the Choose File button to browse for the desired file.
3. Select the file and press Open.
4. When returned to the Load Map Selection window, select ‘OK.’ The Selection file will
be loaded in the map.
Markup- Includes tools for map markups The markup tools provide the ability to draw features and place text on the map.

Markup Point- Tool to make a single point markup on the map
1. Select ‘Draw Point.’
2. Designate draw options (select symbol shape from drop down, Point size, Fill Color,
Outline Size, and Outline Color).
3. Click on a single point on the map.
Markup Line- Tool to make a line markup on the map
1. Select ‘draw straight line.’
2. Designate draw options (selects line size and line color).
3. Point and click to start a line, click again to add any subsequent points on the line,
and double click on the line end point.

1. Select ‘draw rectangle.’
2. Designate draw options (check the box to 'Use Fill', Fill Color, Outline Size, and
Outline Color).
3. Point, click, and drag to draw a rectangle.
Markup Polygon- Tool to make a polygon markup on the map
1. Select ‘draw polygon.’
2. Designate draw options (check the box to 'Use Fill', Fill Color, Outline Size, and
Outline Color).
3. Click on one point to start drawing a polygon. Click on each polygon corner, and
double click on the starting point to close the polygon.
Markup Circle- Tool to make a circle markup on the map
1. Select draw circle.
2. Designate draw options (check the box to 'Use Fill', Fill Color, Outline Size, and
Outline Color).
3. Point, click, and drag to draw a circle.
Markup Label- Tool to add a text label to the map
1. Select ‘draw label.’
2. Select the font size and color.
Input label text in the text box that is marked 'Label text.'

3. Point, click, and drag to create a line on the map indicating text placement.
Markup Fill Color- Tool to specify markup appearance
Designate draw options (check the box to 'Use Fill', Fill Color, Outline Size, and Outline
Color). Draw options are invoked after markup type selection and vary depending on the
type of markup tool selected.

Markup Clear- Tool to clear the previously created markup
Choose the 'Clear' button. The Markup is cleared. Map returns to default.
Markup Save- Tool to save a markup
Choose the ‘Save’ button. Enter a File name and select Save.
Markup Load- Tool to load a markup
1. Select the ‘Load’ button. The Load Map Markup window will open.
2. Select the Choose File button to browse for the desired file.
3. Select the file and press Open.
4. When returned to the Load Map Markup window, select ‘OK.’ The Markup file will be
loaded in the map.
Identify- Tool to identify selected features from activated map layers The identify tool allows the user to retrieve information on specific map locations that
contain a crash data point, or within activated layers.
1. Select the identify icon.
2. Click a point on the map to return information results (if any) on the selected location.

3. Utilize the forward and back arrows at the bottom of the identify panel to scroll through
returned records.
Identify Previous- Tool to navigate to the previous identify record
Click on the ‘identify previous’ button to scroll back through the results returned by the
system.
Identify Navigator- Tool that displays the current page number of the records being viewed
Displays the current record number, as well as the total number of records returned, for the
user selected feature to identify.
Identify Next- Tool to navigate to the next identify record
Click on the identify next button to scroll forward through the results returned by the
system.
Other Map Tools
Measure- Includes tools for map measurement
This tool provides for measurement and location options.

1. Select the measurement icon.
2. Choose the area icon.
3. Select a unit of measurement from the drop-down menu.
4. Select a starting point for measurement on map and click. Click each subsequent point,
and double click on the final point to close the area polygon.
5. Click the distance icon.
6. Specify the unit of measurement.
7. Click on a starting point on the map to begin measuring distance.
8. Click on any subsequent points and double clicks to complete measurement.

9. Select the location icon.
10. Select Degrees, or DMS, from the scroll down menu.
11. Scroll over the map. The system returns the latitude and longitude for the location of
the cursor as the user scrolls over the map.
12. Select a point on the map and click. System marks the point with a marker and displays
the latitude and longitude of the point.
Pan- Tool to navigate the map view
1. Click the Pan Icon.
2. Click on the map and drag the cursor to move the map.

Zoom In- Tool to zoom in on the map view
1. Click the Zoom In button

3. Select the Zoom In magnifying glass icon
3. Click and drag on the map display to indicate zoom in area. System zooms in according
to User specifications.
Zoom Out- Tool to zoom out of the map view
1. Select the Zoom Out button located in the upper left hand corner of the map.
OR
2. Select the Zoom Out magnifying glass icon.
3. Click and drag on the map display to indicate zoom out area. System zooms out
according to user specifications.

Zoom Previous- Tool to navigate back through previous map views
Select the zoom previous icon to revert the map back to the last zoom area.
Zoom Next- Tool to navigate forward through previous map views
Select the zoom next icon to advance to the next extent zoomed in/ out on.
Zoom Extent- Tool to return map view to default settings
Select the zoom to extent of map icon to revert the map view to user defined parameters or
default.
Export Map-Tool to save created maps in various file formats
1. Utilize any method to return desired crash point data within the application.
2. Select the Export icon located on the toolbar on the map.
3. System will invoke an export window.
4. Select the file format that you wish to save the image as from the drop-down menu.

5. Click on the Create Map Image button
6. Select the Open Image button.
7. File will be opened in a new browser tab.
8. User can save or print the file by selecting the appropriate options from the File menu, or
selecting the appropriate icons from the toolbar that appears over the image.
Search-Search for results based on user text input.
1. Select the dropdown menu from the “Search” tool.
2. Select to search by Coordinate, Address, County, City, Rail Crossing, or Rail Line.

Save as Default
1. Select the Options button at the bottom of the Layers panel.
2. Select ‘Save as Default’ from the expanded menu.
3. Close SAVER.
4. Re-launch SAVER. Layers designated prior to selecting Save as Default in previous
session are displayed.
***Please note that saving settings as default is specific to the user, browser and computer in
use.
Load Default
At any time during an active session in SAVER, you may load the previously saved default
setting by selecting ‘Load Default’ from the Layers Options menu.
Clear Default
To clear previously saved default Layers settings, select ‘Clear Default’ from the Layers Options
menu.
Reports- Generates reports containing information on selected crash data points.
Predetermined Reports:
1. Utilize any method of finding or selecting desired crash data points.
2. Select the reports icon.
3. Choose any of the predetermined Report formats: Driver Characteristics, Event
Characteristics, Quick Report, Road Characteristics, Vehicle Characteristics,
Abbreviated Report, Crash Characteristics, or Crash Detail Report.
4. Select Open to open the report in a separate browser window.
5. Select Export to Save the Report.
Report Development Kit: Create custom report templates
1. Utilize any method of finding or selecting desired crash data points.
2. Select the reports icon.

10. Edit the item, or remove the item by selecting the 'Remove Item' button.

10. Select 'export' chart: Enter title, select file type from the drop down menu,
and select save.

Table- Tool to locate and view specific crash data points 1. Utilize any method to select a portion of the map results to display.
2. Select the icon for the data visualization table:
The data table will be invoked and all crash numbers will be listed that occurred
within the selected area/ parameters.
3. Select magnifying icon next to a crash entry record. The map will zoom/ pan to
location of the specific accident data point on the map, which will be highlighted
blue.
4. Hover the cursor over the crash data entry to highlight the data point in a large blue
circle. The data point will be temporarily highlighted in blue.

5. Select the arrow for Crash Details. The window will be expanded to provide the
user with detailed crash information on the selected crash data points.
Export Data
6. Select the Export Data button to invoke the Export Data window.
7. Enter a file name, select the file type from the drop-down menu:
• Excel File (.xlsx)
• Comma Separated Value File (.csv)
• Tab Delimited Text File (.txt)
• Shapefile (.shp)
• KML (.kml)
• KMZ (.kmz)

Select save. The exported file will be downloaded by default to the browser
download folder.
8. The user can then open the downloaded file or save it to another location.
***Please note that the content of the exported file will vary:
• Export data from the collapsed Crash Data window will contain: case #,
Date, and severity.
• Export Data from the expanded Crash Data Window (when in Quick
Mode) will contain: case #, Date, severity, time, law enforcement case #,
county, city name, severity, and literal description.
• Export Data from the expanded Crash Data Window when in the
Advanced Mode will contain: case #, Date, severity, time, law
enforcement case #, county, city name, severity, literal description, day of
the week, road system, Route, Cardinal, overpass/underpass, road
classification, intersection class, damage amount, major cause, and 1st
harmful event.
Select Columns for Data Table Configuration:
When utilizing the SAVER application in the Advanced Mode, the user also has the capability of
defining which fields of information to display in the columns of the data table.

6. Select Ok. Crash results will be displayed with the information specified by the user.
Selecting Export Data at this point would also export the user selected columns.
7. To return to the default selections: Click the ‘Select Columns’ button, and click the
‘Use Default’ button.

Load Default

The collision Diagram panel will be invoked on the
right side of the screen. The default title is
provided as ‘Collision Diagram.’ You are not
required to change this title.
***Please note that if you have more than 100
crash data points in your results, Collision
Diagraming is not available. Collision Diagraming

Crash Count- Provides crash count on all selected data points Default View
Upon application launch, the Crash Count will display the total number of all crash count
data entries.

Preferences- Access setting preferences 1. Select the preferences icon at the top right-hand corner of the screen
2. Check the boxes for ‘Show North Arrow’, ‘Show Map Scale’, or ‘Show Tool Tips’
3. Select ‘OK’ to apply the preferences only to the current session, or ‘Save as Default’ to
retain user preferences throughout future sessions.
4. If selected, the North Arrow will now be present in the bottom left hand corner of the
map. The Map Scale will be visible in the bottom left hand corner of the map as well.

Save as Default- Save jurisdiction selections and make them the default launch settings.
After filtering by jurisdiction selections, you can save those selections to load by default upon
subsequent use of the SAVER application.

upon launch.
Please note: Save as Default only maintains selections within the menu it is selected. For
example; you selected crash points filtered by year 2017, and jurisdiction of State Patrol District

Intersection/interchange: Filter crashes by Intersection/Interchange
Intersection/Interchange contains the same menu as that for Roadway/Route. The difference lies
in the fact that it is a filter for an “Intersection” of two routes. The filter panel is identical to the
Roadway/Route panel with the exception that it provides for 2 simultaneous Route entries.
1. Select the checkbox next to ‘Intersection/Interchange.’
2. Complete the required fields for Route 1.
3. When complete with filters for Route 1, Click on the tab that says ‘Route 2.’

17. Choose ‘Cancel’ to discard changes and exit Query Builder.

Chart Pop Out
After clicking the Charts button to open the Charts pane, you may click the Pop Out button to
open the charts in a new browser tab. When the Chart is in its own tab, it remains connected to
the application and as jurisdictions, years, filtering or selections occur, the chart(s) being
displayed in the new tab are updated and in sync with the application interface.

Chart Pop In
To return the Popped-Out Chart to the main application window, click the Close Pop Out button.
Table Pop Out
After clicking the Table button to open the Table (Crash Details) pane, you may click the Pop

connected to the application and as jurisdictions, years, filtering or selections occur, the data
being displayed in the new tab are updated and in sync with the application interface.
Additionally, the options for data export as well as column selection in Advanced mode are

Zoom to Feature
When the Table is in a Popped-Out view, clicking the Magnifying Glass button for a record will
zoom the map to that record.
Table Pop In
To return the Popped-Out Table to the main application window, click the Close Pop Out button.
Application Session End
When a Chart or Table is Popped-Out of the application and the main application window is
closed, the session for the Chart or Table will also end.
Map Visualizations Map Visualizations are predefined views of the map and data, including charts that have been
loaded into the system. To load one, click the Visualizations menu.
Then choose one of the options form the list. If no Map Visualizations have been loaded into the
system, the menu will not appear.
