What are

A shark is a marine fish. Most sharks are carnivores but the biggest sharks are usually herbivores.

These incredible creatures have been around for a very long time, way before the dinosaurs!

They are EXTREMELLY important to the ocean, without them would be a disaster for the ecosystems in marine life!

This is a whale shark, the biggest fish on the planet! It can grow up too 40 feet! (12 metres)

What type of sharks are there?

There are 440 species of sharks, and it is predicted that there are more to discover!

Sharks are split up into 8 different groups: this PowerPoint will give a brief description of what type of sharks are in these groups!

Hexanchiformes Hexanchiformes are a group of sharks

that are also known as Cow sharks. They have 6 or 7 gills, have only one dorsal fin, and large tear drop shaped eyes! They live deep down in the ocean.

Sharks found in this sub group include blunt nosed six gill shark.

Squaliformes

Squaliformes have 5 gills and 2 dorsal fins. They range from being 21.2 cm (the Dwarf Lattern Shark) to as big as 7.4 m in length! (Greenland Shark) These sharks tend to stick to deep depth, a Portuguese Shark has been noticed 3675m deep!

Squatiniformes

Squatiniformes have flattened bodies, five gills, 2 spineless dorsal fins, no anal fin and there mouth is at the front. These type of sharks prefer warmer, temperate or tropical climates. An angel shark is a good example for this type of shark.

Pristiophoroformes

These sharks also have no anal fin, 5 or 6 pairs of gill slits and have a long saw like snout. These sharks are also known as saw sharks and there are 8 species of them. They prefer warmer climates, such as south Africa and Cuba.

Lamniformes

Lamniformes are the most well known group of sharks. They have 2 spineless dorsal fins, an anal fin, five slit gills and out of all the families of sharks, Lamniformes have the largest mouths. Sharks in this family include the rare megamouth shark, the basking shark and…

The Great White Shark!

This shark is the most commonly known shark in the world.

What’s the problem?

Why are humans so

afraid? When it comes to fears, sharks are high on the list… but why? At maximum sharks kill 5 people a year, mainly due to them taking a bite and leaving the victim. You are more likely to be killed by a coconut, lightning or even your own toaster!

Have you heard of ?This famous film was released to the public in 1975 and was created bySteven Spielberg. This film was a total phenomenon as it was the first

film about shark attacks. The great white shark became hugely infamous. This film caused the global fear of sharks, and because of this it caused

a huge fishing frenzy. People went out to sea and killed millions of great whitespurely because they feared them.

PEOPLE ARE WRONG!

Approximately 100 million sharks

are killed a year. Unfortunately th

e

Number of sharks may go up to 273 million

being killed a year.

73 sharks

are

killed

PER HOUR

People hunt sharks for their fins especially as ‘shark fin soup’ is a delicacy in places. They cut of the fins and dump the rest of the body back in the ocean, sometimes alive.

HUMANS ARE THE 2ND HIGHESTREASON FOR HUMANS BEING

KILLED. HUMANS KILL APPROXIMATLEY 475,000

HUMANS A YEAR.

Page 21: SAVE THE SHARKS! PowerPoint by Jenny Macleod. What are A shark is a marine fish. Most sharks are carnivores but the biggest sharks are usually herbivores

Besides, why be afraid of sharks? MOSQUITOS KILL THE MOST HUMANS EVERY YEAR! They kill 1 million people every year!

Don’t kill sharks; save them!

Sharks are vital for the ecosystem, keeping the food chains in balance. Without them, the ocean is in serious danger. Luckily there are people out there who are trying to prevent this.
