ASIA’S PREMIER PLATFORM FORENERGY INSIGHTSSince 2008, the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) has brought together more than 140,000 energy players from over 80 countries to discuss energy issues shaping the industry.

The 11th edition of SIEW was held from 29 October to 2 November 2018 at Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands. Policymakers, heads of international organisations and industry leaders had a fulfilling week of discussions revolving around the theme “Transforming Energy: Invest, Innovate, Integrate”.

Siew opening remarks

Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Trade and Industry, Singapore, kicked off the week of discussions with his SIEW Opening Remarks.

Singapore energy summit

The Singapore Energy Summit (SES) featured keynote addresses by distinguished energy thought leaders at each panel discussion, providing varied insights to energy issues. Keynote speakers included Adnan Amin, Director-General of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Yuji Kakimi, President of JERA and Marianne Laigneau, Group Senior Executive Vice President of EDF.

SES began with a SIEW Opening Panel: Energy Transformation in ASEAN, which focused attention on how ASEAN is working towards achieving energy security, accessibility, affordability, and sustainability through investment, innovationand integration.

Session 1: Invest

Panellists discussed infrastructure financing, investment challenges, and roles of policymakers and industry players in enabling bankable, sustainable energy projects.

Session 3: Integrate

Marianne Laigneau, Group Senior Executive Vice President of EDF, talked about designing solutions to achieve energy optimisation, security and reliability.

Panellists touched on what the energy systems of the future will look like, and how we can better integrate energy sources, systems, and policies to facilitate our energy transformation.

Session 2: Innovate

H.E. Frank Fannon, Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Energy Resources, US Department of Energy, shared the US latest energy initiatives including the Asia EDGE (Enhancing Development and Growth through Energy).

Panellists discussed how innovation in technologies, policies, and business models can impact the future energy landscape.

Yuji Kakimi, President of JERA, discussed innovations in gas-to-power solutions.


Siew energy insights

SIEW Energy Insights gathered energy experts to share their perspectives on the latest energy trends. DNV GL launched its Energy Transition Outlook 2018 which highlighted DNV GL’s independent forecast of the global energy future from now till 2050. The World Nuclear Association launched its World Nuclear Performance Report 2018 Asia Edition on the significant role of nuclear energy in fulfilling future energy demand.

Singapore-iea forum

The Singapore-IEA Forum, co-hosted by the Energy Market Authority of Singapore and the International Energy Agency, addressed the role of digitalisation in the energy system of the future.


Youth@SIEW is a platform to excite young leaders on the latest global energy developments and to explore how innovation and new technologies such as digitalisation and distributed generation can drive our transition to a sustainable and resilient energy landscape. Dr Tan Wu Meng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Singapore, shared more on the critical role youth play in shaping Singapore’s energy future at In-Dialogue with Youth.

Six SIEW Thinktank Roundtables covered a wide range of topics such as Transforming Energy – Beyond the ‘Cheap vs Green’ Dilemma, Mobilising Green Financing in the ASEAN Sustainable Energy Market, the potential of Carbon-free Hydrogen and Electric Vehicles and Smart Infrastructure.

Four polytechnic students have been awarded this year’s Energy-Industry Scholarship (EIS). The EIS is intended to develop and nurture a pipeline of talent for the power sector and is open to both Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and Polytechnic students.
