Save One Life is grateful to our many sponsors and donors who helped make 2017 an unforgettable year!

By sharing your compassion and resources you offered hope, opportunity and connection to more than 1,500 deserving individuals and their families in 13 developing countries.

We especially thank mountaineer Chris Bombardier for raising funds through his historic Mt. Everest climb—becoming the first person with hemophilia to summit the world’s tallest mountain. We appreciate his friends, family and fans for supporting this remarkable feat with their generous sponsorships and donations.

We also say thank you to our Wheels for the World champion, Barry Haarde, and all his loyal supporters who helped him raise over $250,000 during the six years he cycled for Save One Life. Barry passed away unexpectedly on February 17, 2018. He will be forever missed.

President Laurie Kelley traveled to Nepal in April to join the Bombardier expedition to Everest Base Camp. After an adventurous nine-day trek, Laurie and Jessica Bombardier returned to Kathmandu to attend a ceremony at the Nepal Hemophilia Society and distribute sponsorship funds to beneficiaries.

Laurie also made her fourth trip to Pakistan in December. She visited all three cities where Save One Life has program partners with the Pakistan Hemophilia Patients Welfare Society. She saw members she knew as children many years ago, who now as adults are making great strides in effectively serving the bleeding disorder community.

Executive Director Martha Hopewell visited seven program partners in five countries to strengthen working relationships.

Honduras: Martha met the dynamic brother-sister duo David Solomon and Tirsa Carcamo, Save One Life’s key contact in Honduras Hemophilia Society. She also visited the Society’s first three scholarship recipients and reviewed applications for its first micro-enterprise grants.

Ghana: With our key contact at the Ghana Hemophilia Society, Charles Adu, Martha visited families in Accra and Kumasi, identified potential micro-enterprise grant applicants and saw our five-time scholarship recipient, Michael Attivor, at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Nigeria: Key contact and president of the Hemophilia Foundation of Nigeria, Megan Adediron, traveled with Martha to Lagos and Enugu to meet the local chapter leaders and visit families.

Bangladesh: This was Save One Life’s first official visit to the Hemophilia Society of Bangladesh. Martha traveled with president Najmul Alam and other colleagues to

three districts to meet beneficiary families, distribute sponsorship funds and present gift-filled backpacks donated by the Hemophilia Foundation of Oregon.

India: Martha traveled with Save One Life’s India Program Coordinator, Usha Parthasarathy, to visit four program partners in Guwahathi, Assam, Kolkata and Durgapur, West Bengal and Bhubaneswar in Odisha.

Tirsa, Solomon and Wilmer visiting scholarship recipient Jeison in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Martha visiting Emmanuel at his home outside Accra, Ghana.

Abdullah, Yasin and Nazrul from Chandanaish District in Bangladesh, receiving their backpacks.

Chris Bombardier: Before Chris Bombardier started his expedition up Everest, he and his wife Jessica visited the Nepal Hemophilia Society, local treatment centers and hemophilia families in Kathmandu. At a special gathering, members signed Chris’s Save One Life

banner to take to the summit. His adventure is documented in the film “Bombardier Blood.” In early January 2018 Chris became one of only 450 climbers in history to reach the highest peak on every continent by summiting Mt. Vinson in Antarctica, thus culminating his Seven Summits Quest.

Barry Haarde: “The Call of the Wild” was Barry’s sixth Wheels for the World ride. His goal was 2,000 miles. At the 500-mile mark in Yukon, Canada, Barry collided with another rider. Despite serious bruising, Barry persisted to cycle 1,000 miles, bringing his total to well over 20,000 miles through his Wheel for the World tours.

Save One Life had a booth at National Hemophilia Foundation’s Annual Meeting and exhibited for the first time at: Hemophilia Federation of America, American Association of Blood Banks, American Society of Hematology and the Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Nurses.

Nitya Bhattarai, a junior at Amity Regional High School in Woodbridge, Connecticut raised $850 for Save One Life by participating in the Five Boro Bike Tour through New York City.

Hunter Montgomery, a 22-year old medical student from Provo, Utah, is an avid musician who collaborated with his singer/songwriter friend, Emma Huntington, to produce a Christmas CD. They donated the proceeds ($750) to fund a micro-enterprise grant.

Save One Life welcomed development assistant Jodi Weeks and program assistant Heather Klee to the home team. Jojo Antonio joined in a consulting capacity to spearhead a three-year endowment campaign and James Christopher Mabuyo joined as our Philippines program coordinator, based in Cebu, Philippines.

Since 2009 Usha Parthasarathy has vetted new program partners, ensured funds reach beneficiaries and generally ensured the success of our programs in India. With nearly half of all our beneficiaries located in this country, her support is indispensable.

Since 2016 Marelle Hart, originally from the Netherlands, has selflessly worked to raise the visibility of Save One Life in Europe by connecting with European patient organizations, cultivating corporate support and writing news releases about the positive impact of our work on beneficiaries.

Save One Life is fortunate to have two such dedicated volunteers, and we thank them for being an inspiration to us in 2017.

2017 Sponsor of the Year: Larry and Becky Stern

Larry has served on a wide range of non-profit boards including the national COPD Foundation and the Pittsburgh Jewish Association on Aging. Becky has served on local school boards and community foundations while also forming a non-profit that brings the joy of dance to people with special needs (Yes, You Can Dance!). Together they formed the Lawrence and Rebecca Stern Family Foundation in 2010. Their mission is to support organizations that demonstrate and/or translate best practices in a wide range of health care and well-being.

Larry and Becky have sponsored 40 children since 2011. In choosing to support Save One Life, Becky said: “It is refreshing to see a dedicated group of people doing the right things for the right reasons, simply, efficiently and effectively.” Larry went on to say: “Save One Life is a best-in-class model that should be benchmarked and emulated by other patient-centered organizations supporting those in need across global borders.”

Thank you for your heartfelt

support towards transforming

my life. I am pursuing a bachelor's

degree in literature and English

language at Makerere University in

Kampala, Uganda. The university is

currently ranked the third best in

Africa. This gives me hope that after

my graduation I will live a good life.

I received my scholarship and was able to pay the fees on

time. I have to push on despite some difficulty with my legs.

Sometimes it is not easy for me to climb the stairs to attend

the lectures, but with the help of my friends I get to the

lecture rooms. Now I am writing exams and expect to excel with

good grades.

Thank you very much, Save One Life!

Kule ExeviaKampala, Uganda

I am happy to inform you that I am doing very well with my Ola/Uber business. The company promises drivers will earn about $50 a day, but sometimes I earn more when I drive ten or eleven hours. I drive friends and family, too, who often pay more than the Ola rate.

You helped me establish a business to get settled in this tough life. I am successfully paying the loans on my family's house and my car and supporting my parents and brother. My parents have started searching for a wife for me!

I am so very thankful that you trusted me and gave me a chance to prove myself. My happiness goes beyond words!
