learning process itself. "When teach­ers give read ing lists to students, they try to assimi late as many areas," said Suman Sharma, principal of LSR. "For example, if students are learn­ing about education, the teacher will ask them to read up on the political economy of education. We also have academic meets where all the faculty engage in a dialogue on various sub­jects."

Loyola College in Chennai, which is the top- ranked college in sout h India in arts, science and commerce streams, has ancillary papers offered by differenc departments that stu­dents can choose from. So, if some­one is studying English, she can take up social history of England, which is offered by the history department.

Apart from interdisciplinary learn­ing, an area which has seen a lotofini ­tiatives coming from colleges ofl::ite is social engagement. Colleges are

becoming active on the communi ty outre::ich front, as they have re::ilised that::icademic knowledge on its own is not good enough to solve issues facing the country. HT Delhi has launched ::i rural internsh ip programme to expose its students to real-life challenges and encourage them to develop technol­ogy solutions for those problems.

With the human resource develop­ment ministry giving these colleges a push through its Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan, they seem all set to scale new heights. •
