Savanna Animals

Page 2: Savanna animals fah 3 (1) (1)

Cheetah

The cheetah is the world's fastest land mammal. A

cheetah can go from 0 to 60 miles (96 kilometers) an hour in only three seconds.

Female cheetahs often have a litter of three cubs and live with them for one

and a half to two years. Young cubs spend their first

year learning from their mother and practicing

hunting techniques with playful games. Male

cheetahs live alone or in small groups.

Elephant

African elephants are the largest land animals on

Earth. Elephant ears radiate heat to help keep these large animals cool,

but sometimes the African heat is too much.

Elephants are fond of water and enjoy showering by sucking water into their trunks and spraying it all

over themselves. Afterwards, they often

spray their skin with a dust. An elephant's trunk is

actually a long nose used for smelling, breathing, drinking, and also for

grabbing things.

Giraffe

Giraffes are the world's tallest mammals. A giraffe's

legs alone are taller than many humans. It’s about 6 feet (1.8 meters). These tall giraffes can run as fast as 35 miles (56 kilometers) an hour over short distances and run comfortably at 10

miles (16 kilometers) an hour over longer distances.

Giraffes use their long neck to reach high leaves. The giraffes tongue is 21-inch (53-centimeter) long. The

giraffe's height also helps it to keep a sight for predators

across the wide savanna.

Lion

Lions are the only cats that live in groups, which are

called prides. Females are the prime hunters and work

together to prey. They do this by splitting into groups.

One group chases the animals to a certain area while another group waits to ambush the victims.

Caracals

Caracals has brown-red skin color. For male they can

weigh up to up to 17 kg and for female they can weigh

up to p to 14 kg. Their body(head-body) can be as long as 60-75 cm and their tale can be as long as 22-30 cm. Their main habitat are woodlands, savanna.

They usually hunt for birds, and small deer.

Egyptian Mongoose

The Egyptian mongoose is the largest of all

mongooses in Africa. The Egyptian mongoose lives in

Africa on the savanna. Egyptian mongooses live in rocky areas, and small woodlands and forested

areas within the savanna. These mammals prefer to

live near water. All mongooses are known for

being talented snake killers. The Egyptian mongoose can be 19 to 23 inches in

height. Adults weigh 4 to 7 lbs. Its tail is 13 to 21

inches long

Zebra

Zebra has black stripes all over it’s body. All zebra has

their own stripes. The patterns may make it

difficult for predators to see. Because of their stripes may also help zebras recognize one

another. Zebras are social animals.

Kangaroo

Kangaroo have a very strong legs. Kangaroo can jump as fast as 30 miles

per hour and can jump 30 feet high. Red and gray

kangaroos are between five and six feet tall. Most weigh

between 50 and 120 pounds, though some can

reach to 200 pounds. Female kangaroos are generally smaller than

males of the same species. Kangaroos are marsupials, which means that females carry newborns, or "joeys,"

in a pouch.

Jack Rabbit

Jackrabbits are actually hares, not rabbits. Hares

are larger than rabbits, and they have taller legs and

longer ears. They could hop about 40 miles per hour and they can jump more than 10 feet. They use there high jumping and

zigzag running to get safe from predators.

Meerkats

Meerkats often stay in groups and several families may live together in a large community. Meerkats work together in numbers, a few will look out for predators and they will also make

sound if the predators are coming. Also there is another group that is

guarding. Meerkats will eat insects, lizards, birds, and fruit. When hunting small game, they work together

and communicate with purring sounds.

Rhinoceros

Both black and white rhinoceroses are actually

gray. They are different not in color but in lip shape.

The black rhino has a pointed upper lip, while its

white relative has a squared lip. The black

rhinoceros eat plants from trees and bushes while

white rhinoceros eat grasses. Under the hot

African sun, white rhinos take cover by lying in the

shade. Rhinos are also wallowers. They find a

suitable water hole and roll in its mud, coating their skin with a natural bug repellent and sun block.

African wild dogs

The African wild dog, also called Cape hunting dog or

painted dog, typically roams the open plains and sparse woodlands of sub-

Saharan Africa. These long-legged canines have only four toes per foot, unlike

other dogs, which have five toes on their forefeet. The dog's Latin name means

"painted wolf," referring to the animal's irregular, mottled coat, which

features patches of red, black, brown, white, and

yellow fur. Each animal has its own unique coat pattern,

and all have big, rounded ears.

Jaguar

Jaguars are the largest of South America's big cats. Unlike many other cats, jaguars are not scared of water but in fact, they are

quite good swimmers. Most jaguars are tan or orange with black spots. Jaguars live alone, young jaguars

learn to hunt by living with their mothers for two years or more. They sometimes climb trees to prepare an ambush, killing their prey

with one powerful bite.

Aardwolf

The aardwolf is like a small stripes hyena. The a

aardwolf is small and shy. The aardwolf has big ears to hear underground and also good sense of smell.

Aardwolf are also a member of the hyena. They

have a body length between 55 and 80 cm. a

tail length between 20 and 30 cm (7.9 - 11.8 inches)

and they weigh between 8 and 10 kg (17.6 - 22 lbs).

Their fur is yellowish/white. There front leg is longer

than there back leg.

Klipspringer

The small antelope are about 20 inches tall and weighs 23-to-29 pounds; the female is heavier. The

klipspringer is the only antelope that lives on cliffs and rock outcrops. he head is wedge-shaped on a short

neck, with big rounded ears. They have four inch long horns. There body is

brown and there ear is black. They often jump from

rock to rock.

Clouded Leopard

The clouded leopard is an Asian cat. Clouded leopard

are very good climbers. They could even hang upside down. Clouded leopards have short, powerful legs. Sharp

eyesight helps them judge distances well, and the cats

use their long tails to maintain balance.

Bat-Eared Fox

The bat-eared fox is a small African fox known for its

enormous ears, which are over 5 inches (13

centimeters) long. Their large ear help them cool down. Also they can hear

other animals sounds from far away clearly. Bat-eared foxes are sandy gray with lighter fur on the belly and darker fur around the eyes.

Its wide habitat range matches that of its favorite food, the harvester termite.
