As part of a wider'chip shop project' at Beamish Museum, Berriman's of Spennymoor'shorse-drawn chip van was rebuilt by Stanegate Restorations as part of the museum'soutreach programme,

over a coal fired range, with chips cut lust afew minutes ago as opposed to coming from aplastic bag or, heaven forbid , a freezer.

Don't get them any more? Well you canfind them at Beamish Museum, as the

town where the famous painter NormanCornish drew much of his inspiration and, perhaps not unsurprisingiy, the van hadfeatured (complete with queue of hungrytownsfolk) in several paintings by the artist.Beamish was keen that this connection wasmore widely understood and that thecommunities could engage with somethingthree dimensional, thus it was decided at anearly stage that the museum's outreach teamwould be able to take the van out toschools and communities to show an aspect

of life that has not perhaps changed asmuch as we might think. This would also tiein with a commitment to film the chip shopproject development for a BBC documentary

The chip van worked until 1971 beforebeing purchased by Beamish Museumwhere it was stored until recently and thechip shop project gave an opportunity for itto see the light of day again. The firmchosen to restore the van was StanegateRestorations & Replicas of Haltwhistle inNorthumberland. Ian Yates' team had

The interior fittingsare from a variety of sources, not least theDar.y brothers, who operated Tyneside,s lastcoal fired chip shop into recent years, thecontents being incorporated into theBeamish reconstruction.

But alongside this building stands a rathercurious vehicle, Berriman,s chip van, whichfor many years served the town ofSpennymoor in Co. Durham.

The origin of this coke-fired, horse-drawnchippy is lost in time, although we know itwas bought by George Kirtley -'Chip .r'an

Geordie' - in 7923 before being taken overby the Berriman family in 1935. It soldchips or fishcake and chips - but never fish.A good sized cod would not fit in the pans.

It worked several sites in Spennymoor andthe van holds special memories for theolder residents of the town. "Excellent,, and"best in the country," are just a couple oftheir recollections.

The chip van has a strong culturalconnection in Spennymoor, for this is the

already canied out some work on Beamish, strams as well as several smaller items. Theywere in the process of repairing a horse_drawn ex-Birmingham Co-op bakery van forthe museum and had a lot of experience ofrebuilding large complex wooden itemsranging from old lifeboats to railwavcarriages and wagons.

On delivery to Haltwhistle, Ian carried outwhat can only be described as anarchaeological dig on the van. It wascbmpletely untouched since coming out ofuse. The pans still held dripping and therew€re paper chip cones, washing up bowls, kitchen tools and a flask that, even thoughrusted through at the botrom, still heldliquid. The hoppers still held about half ahundredweight of coke. providing a sourceof tea-break amusement were thenewspapers ready to wrap the chips.

The main decision to be made was whatwas restorable and what to replace. Thebasic aim was to keep as much of theoriginal as possible and in day to daycondition. The roof revealed signs of firesand was basically a set of metal patchesovef the one remaining roof stick andadded metal angle iron. The rest of thebody was corroded aluminium sheet

internally with very rusted steel outside. The frame that it was rather loosely fixedon to was very rotten. The main underframewhich had clearly been the subject ofseveral modifications and crude repairs overthe years had broken its back so the saddecision was made to build a new body. What could be repaired? The wheels andforecarriage were salvageable, although the

0utreach Beamish-style: Stanegate's lan Yates was draftedin for the task of lighting up and cooking chips fordistribution to children lrom a local school in Spennymoor,

back axle had been completely burntthrough as the cooking unit had no ashpanand all the red hot cinders fell through onto the ax1e. A11 the springs were completelyshot. The storage units inside lr.'ere reusablewith repair as was the original chip chopperand the external fold-up eating shelves. Thecoke hoppers could be rebuilt and otherbits of metalwork could be restored, therewould be enough to say that it was arebuild, not a replica.

The construction of the new body framewas completed quite quickly, although thefinal dismantling of the old underframe andrunning gear waited for the arrival of theTV film crew that was making adocumentary about the Beamish chip shopproject. It was only after the final salvage ofreusable items from this that it wasconfirmed that one of the s,-heels wasappreciably larger than the other three."Keep it that way," said Beamish, "its limp isall part of its character."

Replacement springs were ordered and athorough overhaul ofthe wheels andrunning gear commenced, revealing a tathetcomplex paint scheme under many layers oflater paint. What the van had started life asis still a mystery but it had fuIIy lined outwheels and front axle, most probably beinga dray or'rolley' in an earlier incarnation.

The brief from Beamish was to create aprimarily static exhibit, something to add tothe collection of genuine chip shop artefactsbeing incorporated into the new chip shopbut which would still be mobile for takingto exhibitions and events. The van clearlydoes not meet any current health and safetyregulations. Imagine, the operators stand ina deep well with the storage unit one sideand the range on the other. The cookingtakes place in large 'jam kettles'which fit ina square of four circular holes above thecoke fires. To top up the coke you lift outthe kettle of hot fat and take the coke fromthe hoppers at the side of the vehicle anddrop it through the hole before replacingthe pan. Try this if it's the fire in the part ofthe range furthest away from the well! HSEinspectors would break into a sweat justlooking at it.

The original cooking range was iust aloosely assembled collection of rust andfirebricks. Rather than produce a wood orsteel pattern copy, Ian set Peter, a qualifiedwelder and coachbuilder, the task ofbuilding a replica. In the spirit of StanegateRestorations, he did manage to reuse the

A maior plan for the end of restoration was to return lo Spennymoor, which elicited fond memories from older peoplelike "excellent," or "best in the country". Unfortunately Beamish-based Clydesdale 'Bonny', seen here making thechip van's triumphant return, had to be put down late last year.

The easiest way to move the chip van to its covered area at the chip shop provec{ to be by horse. A pause in the street resulted in this queue! The van was generally positionedbefore being used and would not havel in 'working' mode {ihe fat would splash out 0f the pans). By the end of its working life it was probably very seldom moved.
