OurMission...The founding and ongoingpurpose of the Sault AreaHospital Foundation is to raisefunds for the hospital. Theprovincial government providesthe basics in healthcare. But thesebasics do not include the full costof new medical equipment.New equipment and upgrades topatient care facilities andprograms have always beenconsidered a communityresponsibility.

To accomplish this, the Sault AreaHospital Foundation seekscommunity involvement throughdonations from patients, theirfamilies and friends, businesses,service clubs and otherorganizations.

When I officially step down as President of the Sault Area HospitalFoundation’s Board of Directors at our Annual Meeting in June, I willlook back on the experience with fond memories and a great deal ofpersonal satisfaction.

I have served as the volunteer President of the Sault Area HospitalFoundation since 1997. During this time, the Foundation has achievedtremendous results while undergoing substantial change. Two majormilestones that come immediately to mind are the amalgamation ofthe Plummer and General Hospitals in 1998 and the recently completednew hospital campaign.

In December, 2001 the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announcedsupport for a new hospital on the Davey Home site. Many steps havebeen taken to make this $250 million project a reality. At present,

the construction of the facility is scheduled to commence in the fall, opening in early 2010.

More than a year was spent behind the scenes preparing for our New Hospital Campaign to fund thecommunity portion of the cost. The campaign was officially launched to the public on March 31, 2006and, as of May 10, 2007, we have raised an incredible $26,429,374!

Our Annual Meeting will also mark the retirement of Bud Carruthers, Vice-President of our Board andChair of our Finance Committee. Thank you just doesn’t seem to be enough – Bud has been servingthe Foundation since June 1990, and his devotion and financial expertise will be greatly missed.

If I am to take anything from my 10 years with the Foundation it is the realization that this communityis unsurpassed in its compassion and generosity. It has met or exceeded every objective, both in timesof prosperity and recession. The people of our community have made all of us at the Foundation veryproud.

In addition to the new hospital campaign, our regular annual campaigns have given us the privilegeof disbursing millions of dollars to purchase needed medical equipment for the Sault Area, Thessalonand Matthews Memorial Hospitals. Among the highlights of the past 10 years was the Cardiac MonitorCampaign which raised more than $1.1 million dollars in just over 2 1/2 years and allowed us to purchase50 state-of-the-art cardiac monitors for our hospital.

None of the Foundation’s many accomplishments would have occurred without the dedication and skillof its employees. I want to personally thank Cheryl and her staff for enduring every new challenge andobstacle with enthusiasm and good humour.

I wish our incoming President, Gus Palombi, and my fellow board members and friends the very bestas they take the Foundation into what promises to be a very bright future for our hospital and ourcommunity.

To characterize this past year in one word I would say it was remarkable.The overwhelming support for the New Sault Area Hospital Campaignwas much more than I could have ever imagined! We began with anambitious campaign team of volunteers led by our Co-Chairs JohnHollingsworth and Dr. David Walde and a diligent staff. Our days werefilled with running both our Annual Giving and New SAH Campaigns.Much to our good fortune, the new hospital campaign involved a lotof meetings and cheque presentations with businesses, families, serviceclubs and various organizations within the Algoma District.

As the 06-07 fiscal year ends, we bid farewell to our Board President,Jamie Melville and our Vice-President and Chair of our Finance Committee,Bud Carruthers. For more than 10 years Jamie and Bud endowed theFoundation with exemplary leadership that has guided us through manysuccessful annual giving campaigns and the most recent new

hospital campaign. They have seen us through the establishment of new programs and the strengtheningof others. Their commitment to the Foundation and SAH will be greatly missed by us all.

I am eager with anticipation as I look towards the year ahead…

When we began our campaign more than two years ago,the task in front of us was a challenging one.
