Saul Bass was a graph’ic and motion designer predominately in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Bass was a freelance designer and opened a studio in 1950 to pursue a career in advertising’ until being hired by Otto Preminger to design a movie poster for the 1954
What
Bass worked with Alfred Hitchcock’ Otto Preminger and Martin Scorsese’ Stanley Kubrick’ John Frankenheimer’ and many more. Bass designed movie posters and movie title sequences. Bass has designed over 50 movie title sequences’ Bass’ most famous title sequence is from Otto Preminger’s 1955 movie ’The man with the golden arm’. Until the release or ’The Man With the Golden Arm’’ Projection’ists pulled back the cinema curtains af’ter the movie title had passed because they were dull and boring. Once ’The Man With the Golden Arm’ arrived in US cin’emas there was a note taped to the reel Projection]ists ’ pull curtain before ti’tles’.’’’’Preminger wanted his audience to see The Man with the Golden Arms titles as an integral part of the film. The titles featured a black cut out ani’mated heroin addicts’ arm. Bass knew that the arm was a very powerful image of drug abuse and addiction. Bass chose to use the arm rather than Frank Sinatra’s face as the main symbol for the movie poster and the opening titles.
WHYSaul Bass had a very unique style to his work’ Although it looks very basic it has in’spired many designers to fol’low in Bass’ footsteps and create designs
Bass’ work and inspiration is evident in many contemporary film posters’. Such as:Burn after reading 2008 a Film by Ethan and Joel Cohen’Mad Men Title sequence a T.V series created by Matthew WeinerBuried 2010 a film by Rodrigo Cort’s
Saul Bass’ title sequence for ’The Man With the Gold’en Arm’ caused a massive sensation and obsession as Bass re’invented the title sequence as a form of art and expression.
“Bass fashioned title sequences into an art, creating in some cases, a mini-film within a film. His graphic compositions in movement function as a prologue to the movie – setting the tone, providing the mood and foreshadowing the action.” — Martin Scorsese

When
and
Where
Bass worked mainly in Holly’wood California’ where he started his own freelance company. And then working for major film companies and di’rectors such as Alfred Hitch’cock’ Otto Preminger and Mar’tin Scorsese’ Stanley Kubrick’ John Frankenheimer
Bass’ work is evident in many con’temporary designers and direc’tor’s work. Bass re’invented the movie opening title sequence and that is evident in contempo’rary designers as most’ if not all movies and films have a title sequence designed to draw in the audience rather than just plain text on the screen’ which is skipped or ignored.Bass was a minimalistic designer’ which had been in VOUGE since Bass had begun designing for the film industry and his style is still evident in contemporary design’ers work. Such as:Catch me if you canOceans ElevenMad men ’TV series’Casino ROyale
Bass’s work is still appreciated to this day’ with the younger generation watching films Bass’ worked on and reading books where Bass’ work has been print’ed.
