Electrical cabinet before ignition

SATURNE Facility[LARGE-SCALE CONE CALORIMETERS]

This experimental facility is equipped with a smoke extraction hood that is used to determine the specifi c parameters of fi res in open environments, such as their power or mass fl ow during combustion.

InstrumentationMaximum capacity of 350 online measurements Thermocouples Pressure sensors Gas analysers Heat fl ow meters Speed probes Flowmeters Soot analysers Electronic scales Laser-based opacimeter system

Objectives

Generating fi res in a free atmosphere (with no oxygen limit):

Characterising all types of fi res:- Determining the power of

the fi re using chemical and mechanical methods

- Studying the spread of fi re in complex equipment set-ups (electrical cabinets, glove boxes, etc.)

Analysing the thermal impact of fi res on neighbouring structures and equipment

Characteristics

Column:- 100 m2 on the ground and

20 m high- Reinforced concrete walls that

are 30 cm thick- Permissible wall temperature:

120°C

Hood:- 3 m in diameter- Maximum permissible power:

~3 MW which is compatible with the maximum suction fl ow of 30,000 m3/h
