Family Connection loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/
Family demands can make us feel like Jesus and the twelve apostles. We wish for times of relaxation and renewal, but there are er-rands to do, household chores to keep up with, volunteer commitments to keep. These are all good things, but we can be left feeling drained and tired as we try to keep up. Per-haps we might take the opportunity this week to give ourselves permission to find the rest and relaxation that Jesus seeks for his disciples in today’s Gospel. One of the gifts we can give to one another in our family life is assistance in finding the time and space to renew ourselves through prayer. When you gather together as a family this week, bring your family calendar. Together review your family calendar and spend some time reflecting on you family activities. In particular, ask if your family has an appro-priate amount of time for rest and relaxation. If not, discuss ways in which this time for renewal might be included in the week ahead. Read together today’s Gospel, Mark 6:30-34. Notice how Jesus tried to find time and space for his disciples to rest and relax after they returned from their mission. Con-clude in prayer together, asking God to help us find time to renew ourselves so that we might be better disciples of Jesus. Pray to-gether the Lord’s Prayer. PREPARES

Holy Family Parish – Camp Hope On July 7, Holy Family announced that the parish has formed a Camp Hope Ministry. For those of you who don't know, Camp Hope is Yakima's Low Barrier Emergency Shelter. This is a shelter where individuals and families in serious need can find a safe place to lay their head, obtain a much needed meal, and most
importantly receive a helping hand on their roads to recovery. The least of our brethren are welcome here. (Matthew 25)
HF has set up a separate bank account where people may donate to 'Holy Family-Camp Hope'. These funds will be administered by HF parishion-ers and will be used to purchase needed items for the Camp, located behind the U-Haul warehouse on east Nob Hill Road.
Because of the generosity of the Holy Family parishioners, we have already raised $6,000 as of July 13. What an amazing Parish!
We have ordered two 20'x32', all-weather surplus used military tents for fami-lies at the Camp. These tents will provide shelter for up to 8 families. With shipping, the tents cost $5,786, and should be delivered by July 25.

This weekend is the Collection for the Special Collection for Priest
Retirement and Seminarian Education. This special and important collection supports our 14 retired priests who have faithfully served our community for many years. We especially lift up the memory of Fr. Thomas Lane, who recently passed away on May 11, 2018. Or-dained to the priesthood on May 23, 1964, he was an inspiring ex-ample of pastoral care with over 50 years as a priest. There will be up to 14 men studying for the priesthood in the fall of 2018. These men will serve us in the diocese. Your generosity makes it possible for them to share in the life of the Church and grow closer to Christ. Please be generous to the second collection! To learn more about the col-lection, please visit www.yakimadiocese.net.

Summer 2018 My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As an abundance of new life breaks forth around us at this time of the year, I take this opportunity to send my greetings to you and your families and to express my deepest gratitude to all of you for your very generous spiritual and financial support over the years of our retired priests and our seminarians in formation.
It has been your continued generosity that has supported the needs of those priests who have served for many years. We especially lift up the memory of Fr. Thomas Lane, who recently passed away on May 11, 2018. Ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1964, he was an inspiring example of pastoral care with over 50 years as a priest. In 2017, your marvelous response to the Special Collection for Priest Retirement and Seminarian Education resulted in the Church collecting a total of $247,017 towards funding these two most important needs. God has indeed blessed His local Church with generous hearts!
We expect the tradition of fine men responding to the call of the Lord, to serve the Church, to continue as we prepare for up to 14 men to be in study for the priesthood in the fall of 2018. The education and formation of men for the priesthood involves annual funding at the level of $50,900 per year, per seminarian. With so many men studying for or discerning the priesthood in the fall, the total cost to the local Church is projected to be $712,200 for the coming school year. The future of the leadership and priestly ministry and service for the Church depends in great part upon your continued generosity, as in years past, to this vital need.
Currently projected financial funding for our retired priests (and for the remainder of us who will retire) for the next ten years is underfunded by $970,000. For our seminarians, the “financial picture” is even more challenging. Currently projected financial funding for the next ten years is underfunded by $6.1 million, leaving the future funding for formation of men for priesthood a grave concern here in the Diocese of Yakima.
To ensure transparency, I should like to advise you that the urgency of these needs is in part due to the insufficient funding of the five-year Capital Campaign for Priest’s Retirement and Seminarian Education, launched in 2005. This campaign has collected $4,816,970 of the $5,250,000 goal set for the Campaign. That goal was based on what the fundraisers suggested we could realistically raise. Despite the generosity of many to this Campaign, we were not able to reach our goal. Fortunately, we continue to receive grants and scholarships, as well as other funds raised in the diocese. That is why this Special Collection is being taken up again this summer, as our once-a-year effort to ensure that the necessary funding for these worthy causes is in place for the coming year.
In closing, while I realize that these are difficult financial times for families and individuals, I ask, on behalf of those who have served you over the decades, as well as for those who will serve you in the future, that you please be as generous as your means allow.
With every best wish and blessing,
Yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph J. Tyson Bishop of Yakima JJT/mgg [signature electronically applied] Fr. Bill Shaw Fr. Tom Lane Fr. John Shaw Michael Kelly Daniel Sanchez William Lane (active pastor) (Nov. 1, 1927 – (senior priest) (Current Seminarians) May 11, 2018)

Christ doesn’t look at His sheepfold in mass numbers; He looks at
His sheep individually and notices when one goes astray. (Mark
6:34) Christ never sees the value of His sheep in the fur on their skin,
the milk they produce, or their lack of blemish. No, He simply sees
their value as a living creature and looks beyond what they do
or have done, and loves them for who and whose they are. We
must shepherd the sheep entrusted to us in the same manner.

In today’s gospel, the people keep coming to Jesus and the apostles for help. Jesus understands that his disciples need a break. He invites the twelve apostles to come away and rest. This is the first and only time in Mark’s gospel that the twelve are called “apostles.” This new title shows that the disciples have been faithful to Jesus. In this passage, Jesus responds to the needs of those around him. He cares for the crowd of people who are like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, begins to teach and help them. Like Jesus, the apostles are to teach and help others too. Family Question: • When do you need time to rest? • Why is Jesus like a Good Shepherd? • How does Jesus show us how to live as his followers?
