• To see if you are already receiving this ex-emption, look at your most recent tax bill.

• This exemption reduces the net taxablevalue by $6,000.

» DISABLED PERSONS EXEMPTION• Must be owner of record and primaryresidence.

• A person with a medically determinablephysical or mental impairment that isexpected to last for a continuous period ofat least 12 months.

• This exemption reduces the net taxablevalue by $2,000.

» HOME IMPROVEMENT EXEMPTION• If you make an improvement to yourprimary residence that results in anincrease in your assessed value you mayqualify for this exemption.

• Addition, New garage, deck, patio, shed orother structural change may qualify.

• This is a four year exemption with amaximum amount of the exemption is$25,000 in assessed value ($75,000 in Market Value).

If you are a Veteran…» RETURNING VETERAN EXEMPTION• Any Veteran returning from active duty inan armed conflict.

• Must be the Veteran’s primary residenceand must be owner of record.

• Only available in the year returning fromthe active duty.

• This exemption reduces the net taxablevalue by $5,000.

» DISABLED VETERANS’ EXEMPTION• Applicant must be a Veteran with at least30% service related disability as certifiedby the US Dept. of Veterans Affairs.

• Veteran must own and occupy as primaryresidence.

• This exemption reduces the net taxablevalue as follows.

• 30%-49% disability is $2,500 • 50%-69% disability is $5,000• 70% disability is exempt up to a maxassessed value of $250,000.

If you are or will be 65 years old or more this year…» SENIOR HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION• Can apply any time during the year thatyou turn 65. Best to do before October 1st.

• Simple 1 page application at the Assessor or County offices.

• Need to bring Driver’s License and Deed if possible.

• This exemption reduces the net taxable value by $5,000.

• Annual renewal card comes in mail each spring.

» SENIOR ASSESSMENT FREEZE• Freezes taxable value of property. Amount of exemption is the differencebetween current assessment and frozen value.

• Must have a total household income of $55,000 or less in the year prior to theapplication.

• Apply before October 1st at Assessor or County Office.

• Must be applied for each year.

after the first of November. Names cannotbe given to potential donors prior to themonth of November. If you wish to participate, you will beasked to purchase a gift for each child in the household andprovide gift cards for holiday meal shopping. Emergency Assistancefor Basic NeedsAvailable to QualifiedWinfield TownshipResidents

Appointments are required and requesteddocumentation must be presented at the time of

application. Proof of address, proof of 30-day income (priorto app date), proof of SS#s, Birth Certificates/Naturalizationpapers or Permanent Resident cards must accompany yourapplication for assistance. Requests for rental assistancemust include a 5-day notice from your landlord for thecurrent month’s rent and a copy of your lease. There must bea Final Notice Prior to Disconnection on a utility bill in orderfor the township to consider it an emergency and thetownship cannot assist with gas or electric bills when theLiHeap program is in effect.

Senior & DisabledBus ServiceTransportation service is available Monday through Friday 8:15 am to 4:30 pm

Ride availability is on a first-call, first served basis the daybefore you are to ride. Cost is $4.00 per round trip per personand you are allowed 3 stops. The bus travels within Townshipboundaries. Please check our website or call the number listedbelow for additional information or closings due to holidays. Mustbe registered to ride the bus.

LiHeap 2017-2018

The 2018 LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy AssistanceProgram) begins on October 2, 2017 for households

which include a Senior (60+) or family members who areDisabled. Disconnected households are also included in thisgroup. The office cannot schedule any appointments ahead ofthe 2nd of October.

Beginning November 1st, families with children UNDERthe age of 5 (not having reached their 5th birthday) may alsoapply, along with Seniors, Disabled and Disconnectedhouseholds.

The rest of the population will be able to apply forassistance with gas and electric bills as of December 1st.LIHEAP will be available through May 31, 2018 or until themoney runs out.

You must make an appointment with the GA office in orderto apply for this program. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated;call 630-231-3591 to schedule. Your latest gas and electricbills, proof of the household income for the prior 30 days, SocialSecurity cards for all household members and if you rent, acopy of your lease are REQUIRED at the time of application. Ifdocuments are missing, your appointment will be rescheduled.An appointment can also be made by calling DuPage County @630-407-6500.
