10:00 PM Thank You and Good Night!

“The HELP$ has meant so much to me! I come from a farm-working

family of seven children and my parents aren’t able to pay for my expenses. I had to handle them

on my own by getting a part time job while going to school full time and dealing with my treatment and

pain.”

Appreciations:This event would not have happened without your help!

Sponsors

Volunteers

The volunteer effort this year was simply tremendous. People procured, made calls, set up, tore down, organized, advised, and delivered at every level. People took on “their size job” and did it with love and care. Thank you, all. We are so honored to have worked with you. Special thanks to Michele Erdrich Gidley of Alfresco Garden Design for her work on the lovely centerpieces, Soulumination for providing their gifted photographers, Barry and Kathy LeMond for sharing their amazing daughter’s life, and Stephanie Punt for a million things--big and little.

Tonight is the culmination of many benefactors. It includes the generous fiscal support of sponsors; the heart-felt gratitude of patients and families; and the love and dedication of the Northwest Sarcoma Foundation community who believes that hope, education, and support should be available to ALL sarcoma patients and their families.

The Board of Directors and staff of Northwest Sarcoma Foundation, along with those we serve, wish to express our most sincere thanks to the following businesses and individuals who made this evening possible.

Table Captains

Tonight is a record-setting audience for Stories from the Vineyard and that would not be the case were it not for our table captains.

Congratulations to Dr. Chappie Conrad. We celebrate your vision and commitment to your work in the field of sarcoma diagnosis and treatment in children and teens. You are truly a hero in the eyes of many.

Honoree: Ernest “Chappie” U. Conrad, III, M.D.Presenter: Jeff Sweeney, Board President, Northwest Sarcoma Foundation

Storyteller: Kristy LeMond, Wake Up and Liveas shared by Barry & Kathy LeMond

Ernest “Chappie” U. Conrad, III, M.D.

We are delighted to honor Dr. Ernest “Chappie” Conrad. “Chappie,” as he is known to most, is the founder of Northwest Sarcoma Foundation. His years of dedicated service, passion, and commitment to his sarcoma patients and their families are an inspiration to us all.

We offered the opportunity to place a tribute advertisement in a book that we are delighted to present to Chappie this evening. Over 50 families sent in personal stories, messages of thanks, and other expressions of gratitude to Chappie. We knew going into this that this recognition was well deserved, but your powerful words and messages of hope confirmed it.

Kristy LeMond, Wake Up and Live

At the young age of 23, while teaching English at a school in Chile, Kristy was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma. She wrote about her experience and view on life in her blog “Wake Up and Live.” This evening, Barry and Kathy LeMond, Kristy’s parents, will share excerpts of her writing, and her inspiring story from Kristy’s perspective on life.

Heart of Jan & Hosmer MorningThese stunning photos are printed on archival paper and professionally framed with archival glass and mat. Perhaps event more beautiful than the photos themselves is the story behind them.

These photos are of nature, captured by Aaron Tani, local photographer and Northwest Sarcoma Ambassador Board Member, who has spent the past year and a half beside his wife Jan as she battles rhabdomyosarcoma. Photography has been a way for him to focus on the world around him, instead of the difficulties facing him and Jan. Serving as his inspiration, Jan, who is currently on hospice, continues to fight this insidious disease. Aaron says that even in the face of death, Jan has always been a shining light to those around her. Both Aaron and Jan really wanted to be here tonight, but due to her health they were not able to make the trip. Aaron said “My hope is that the photos I’ve donated will bring happiness to those who see them and raise money for many that are in need.Thank you to Aaron Tani for this donation.

“The ability to remain part-time at work for another

month of chemo. Meaning I have time to recover and spend time with my kids.

Priceless.”

Since speaking at “Stories of the Vineyard” in 2011, my life has definitely been crazy. In March of 2012, during one of my routine check ups, they found a spot in my lung. After surgically removing the spot, it was confirmed that my cancer had returned. After the surgery I looked into different options and decided to take part in a trial chemotherapy drug treatment at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. I completed the study in a year, then returned to Seattle Childrens’ Hospital. My first appointment back at Childrens’, they performed an echocardiogram, which showed that my decreased heart function had gotten worse. With in the next couple days I saw a cardiologist, and started taking medication for my heart. I have now been cancer free for 2 years. I am taking medications for my heart that allow me to live the life that I want. I am a senior in high school and just finished my last year of tennis where my doubles partner and I finished 1st in the region and we received the all conference award. I coach an indoor soccer team and help out with my high school hockey team. I watch my best friend preform in a musicals, get to see my family everyday, and for that I am thankful. In the fall, I plan to attend college with the intent of becoming a nurse.

James Utzschneider, 2012 StorytellerHello, my fellow members of the Northwest Sarcoma community. It has been 6 years and 2 months since I completed my treatment for Dermatofibrus Sarcoma Protuberans-Fibrous Sarcoma. That treatment included surgery, 7 rounds of in-hospital chemo, and 35 get-togethers with our friendly neighborhood radiation machine. By the time my treatment was over, I was a mess: bald, scarred, overweight, and out of shape. But my cancer was gone.

My wife Jenna and I, along with our children Hazel (born while I was undergoing chemo) and our son Leo, were able to start putting our lives back together again. I went back to work for a few more years, then we quit our jobs to pursue our life-long dream of sailing around the world together as a family. We left Seattle in September 1012 on our catamaran Sophie and sailed across the Pacific, visiting the Marquesas, the Tuomotos, The Society Islands, Rarotonga, Niue, Tonga, Fji, New Zealand, and Vanuatu. I am writing on Halloween as we approach Ghizo Island in the Solomon Islands, where we plan to clear customs and head on to Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Singapore. Malaysia, and Thailand.

My cancer may be gone, but it has never really left me. I still return to the SCCA once a year for scans, and when I see the cancer patients and their families waiting in the lobbies, with the look on your faces saying “Somehow we are going to get through all of this”, I feel like grabbing you, giving you a big hug, and saying “You Will! I did. I was right there where you are. You can do this.” Because hope can make a difference in your lives.
