Dear UNC Graduates,

Commencement marks a milestone in both your journey of lifelong learning and the life of the University of Northern Colorado. As you refl ect on your accomplishments and look forward to new opportunities, know that you are part of more than a centuryʼs tradition on our campus.

In 1890, when civic leaders, educators and citizens from Greeley and across the State of Colorado gathered to celebrate laying the cornerstone of our fi rst building, they spoke of universal education as the foundation for our future. Governor Job A. Cooper told the crowd: “It is the enlightened con-science and educated intelligence of the many that will ultimately crowd back all corruption and an-archy, and harmonize contending factions and dissipate the dangers that threaten our country. Upon this foundation stone laid today will rise an institution to prepare leaders in this great work.”

As graduates, you will leave here today to become the leaders envisioned by our founders. Earn-ing a UNC degree is about more than books and knowledge. It is about nurturing the mind and the heart, seeing potential in the unknown, and preparing to give back to society. If you look at the array of professions — the lives — we prepare students for, many are public service oriented. UNC gradu-ates donʼt just make money; they make a difference.

As you continue your journey of lifelong learning, you can be proud to be part of a distinguished group of UNC alumni who are making a difference across the country and around the world.

Best regards,

Kay Norton

A science teacher I had in seventh grade once told me that as I get older, the school years will seem-ingly go by faster than the previous one. Those words have resonated with me every May since then, but none more so than this year.

My senior year was the most enjoyable and without a doubt the fastest academic year of my life.

I intended on writing this column as a way of expressing how much I love this university and the jobs Iʼve had at this newspaper over the last four years, but fi rst I want to thank the people who helped get me this far.

To Kelly Scott and Diane Schott, thank you for amazing classes my freshman year about what would eventually become

my two majors. To Teresa Sellmer, thank you for making me a better and more confi dent writer, and thank you for always being a professor I could come talk to, even if I was three years removed from your class.

To Lynn Klyde-Sil-verstein, thank you for helping me become the best journalist I can be and for always making sure I did not slack off. To Dr. E, thank you for putting up with me for all the times I bothered you in your offi ce just to talk.

Thanks to Josh Packard for putting up with me, as well. I know it wasnʼt easy all the time, but I think we made it an en-joyable fi rst year for you here at UNC. Iʼm thank-ful I got to learn so much from you in our sociology courses over the past year. And thank you to Angie Henderson for all of your guidance in helping me become a sociology ma-jor in the fi rst place and then an accepted appli-

cant to UNCʼs sociology graduate program. I was made a better sociolo-gist because of you, and I canʼt thank you enough for that.

I also need to recog-nize Kurt Hinkle, my boss at The Mirror, for being a great friend and my biggest critic, both roles meant so much to me.

Lastly, Iʼd be lost with-out my sister Emily and my parents for always being my biggest fans. My grandpa John and my great uncle Jimmy made it fi nancially possible for me to attend college and live comfortably, and their assistance has been one of the greatest blessings of my life.

I probably didnʼt say how much I appreciated you all for always being there for me, even when youʼre hundreds of miles away, but Iʼm saying it now. Thank you so much for everything that you do, because without it I wouldnʼt have enjoyed my time in college as much as

I did. I love you all.I now return to my reg-

ularly scheduled column.This university has

been great to me. I never imagined I would learn so much, academically and about myself, in these four years. Coming to the University of Northern Colorado was the greatest decision of my life.

Iʼve gotten to work with and live with some of my absolute best friends in the world, and I wouldnʼt trade those experiences for anything. Iʼm so grate-ful for all of the wonder-ful friends and professors Iʼve met here, and I canʼt express how much of a better person I am for hav-ing met them.

Itʼs really eye-open-ing for me to think that four years ago I was just starting here at The Mir-ror and at UNC, and now my undergraduate career is over.

Iʼve had the time of my life writing about UNCʼs athletes and coaches and having great friends by

my side as I did so. Those experiences are irreplace-able, and Iʼll always cher-ish them.

Itʼs time for a new be-ginning, though, and I know my future will be brighter because of my de-cision to become a Bear. I grew up and learned so much about myself at UNC, in Harrison Hall and at the corner of 10th Ave. and Cranford Place. For all members of my aforementioned support group, I hope I made you all proud. And I cannot wait to show what I still have left.

So graduates, this is it. After many long years fi ghting through primary and secondary education, you have arrived. For many of you, your formal education ends today.

Congratulations, you are no longer our future.

Donʼt take that the wrong way, thereʼs still a lot for you to do, but now the general expectation is that you are going to be the ones that are doing

things rather than having them done to you.

To explain it another way, consider the fol-lowing quote by former U.S. Navy Admiral Grace Hopper:

“A ship in port is safe; but that is not what ships are built for.”

Up until now youʼve been the ship in port, un-der construction, getting armed and armored, be-ing readied for what lies

beyond. Professors, extracur-

ricular activities, various colleagues and friends have all been a part of this preparation.

Soon youʼll have a piece of paper that more or less certifi es you as someone whoʼs ready to leave port, to act rather than merely being acted upon.

The expectation now lies on you to be in the

present, to take all that youʼve learned and imple-ment it in the world.

Rather than thinking about what you might do, itʼs time to think about what you will do, not in some far-distant time but right now.

So go, do things. Build up tomorrowʼs future leaders, make changes in the world, build empires, lead revolutions, bring a new generation into the

world. Maybe go on and get some more formal education if it strikes your fancy.

Just get about it.Thatʼs right UNC class

of 2013, youʼre not the fu-ture anymore, youʼre the present. Congratulations, now get to work.

2013 UNC SPRING GRADUATION

Israeli expat urges students to consider alternatives to higher educationAlexander [email protected]

For Peleg Rosenthal, Greeley is a long way from home. Rosenthal was born in Israel and moved to Col-orado Springs during his senior year of high school.

“I did my senior year of high school in Colorado Springs, and then it was time to go to college ac-cording to the American dream. I was defi nitely not ready, but I decided okay, if everybody does it apparently I need to do it too,” said Rosenthal.

Rosenthal had to over-come some considerable challenges when consider-ing college.

“I started my search for a college way later than ev-erybody else. I applied to Boulder and UNC. I didnʼt get accepted to Boulder be-

cause I missed the deadline. I also applied to UNC, and I got in. My ACT scores were s***; I barely spoke English,” said Rosenthal.

While many people cow-er at Greeleyʼs pungency, it is a vestige of home for Rosenthal, who lived on a kibbutz, which is a commu-nity farm, in Israel.

“I lived on a kibbutz

for a couple years before I came (to the states). So, the smell wasnʼt a problem. It smelled like home,” said Rosenthal.

Rosenthal was attracted to UNC from the moment he arrived.

“My fi rst impression was great, everyone was so friendly. Everything was pretty, it was green, it was summer, and freshman year was perfect. I loved fresh-man year,” said Rosenthal.

Rosenthal fondly recalls his time as a freshman when he could party often and still maintain good grades.

Today, Rosenthal has fully acclimated to life in America, and his English is fl uent. Rosenthal cites Dr. Joseph French, Dr. Cris de la Tores, and Dr. John Clinebell as specifi c profes-sors who have had an im-pact on him.

Rosenthal is apprecia-tive of the quality of the education he received at the Monfort School.

“Finance at the business school is top notch. I donʼt really have any comparison to other school, but I defi -nitely felt like I was being challenged and I was being taught by the best. All my fi nance professors are really passionate about what they teach and really knowledge-able. I didnʼt feel at any point in time that if I had a question or wanted to go above and beyond the cur-riculum that they would not be there for me to explain it,” said Rosenthal.

Rosenthal wonʼt be tak-ing any breaks following graduation. Next week he will be in New York City beginning an internship in web development at artsicle.com. Rosenthalʼs

internship may not be in the fi nance industry, but it is a testament to his desire to pursue his passions and not be limited by his choice of major.

“My job is not related at all to fi nance, but I am still very glad that I took that path in my education and my career,” said Rosenthal.

Even after success-fully earning his degree and landing a competitive internship, Rosenthal is still not enamored with the con-cept of higher education.

“If I knew more about school when I went into this, I donʼt think I would go and get my four year ed-ucation. I wouldnʼt do my undergrad. I think there are better ways I could spend my money and time,” said Rosenthal. However, he does not regret his experi-ence.

“I did my freshman year right out of high school. As soon as I fi nished my freshman year, I had to go back and serve in the Israeli military. So, I went back to Israel for two years and just fi gured things out, and I realized that I did want to come back and fi nish my fi nance degree, and I donʼt regret that,” said Rosen-thal.

Rosenthal urges lower classmen to consider the educational opportunities that exist outside the class-room.

“College is not right for everyone. Find something that you are passionate about and do it. Donʼt wait. If you want to go to college, go to college, but to be hon-est, I found that things I am passionate about I can learn about from a book at the li-brary,” said Rosenthal.

William Woods loves wolves. He loves wolves so much that he has made it his mission to be an advocate on their behalf.

Woods is graduating from UNC today, and he credits his pursuit of a degree to his proclivity for the majestic canis lupis.

“I went to Yellowstone my junior year of high school, and I saw a wolf for the fi rst time. I had been just dreaming of that moment for so long,” Woods said. “Seeing a wolf in the wild just made me realize I have a purpose. I knew at that moment in time I needed to get my stuff together and get educated. After seeing a wolf in the wild for the fi rst time, I felt like I needed to be a part of their introduction in Colorado and they needed to have a voice to humans.”

During his time at UNC, Woods completed two ma-jors, the fi rst in journal-ism with an emphasis in telecommunications, the second in environmental studies and sustainability. However, he entered college with his sights set on study-ing zoology at Colorado State University. After his fi rst semester at the Univer-sity of Northern Colorado, Woods considered transfer-ring to CSU.

Then, he learned about the ecology program at UNC and decided to plant his roots in Greeley.

Woods studied ecology for two years before enroll-ing in the environmental studies and sustainabil-ity program and declaring a second major in journalism. As an environmental stud-ies and sustainability ma-jor, Woods has had the op-portunity to study under the guidance of Richard Jurin, a renowned professor of biol-ogy at UNC who Woods de-scribes as the Qui-Gon Jinn of environmental studies.

“(Jurin) is a professor that will take any student under his wing and guide them in the perfect direc-tion,” Woods said. “He is defi nitely the perfect men-tor. He is a Jedi knight.”

In his junior year, Woods, inspired by the wisdom of Jurin, collaborated with a small group of his peers in the environmental studies and sustainability program to establish Student LEAF-the Student Leadership for Environmental Action Fund, an organization aimed at engaging the student body in sustainable projects at the university.

In addition to being a dedicated student, Woods is also a bona fi de social maverick. Whether it is spontaneously organiz-ing hundreds of students to produce a “Harlem Shake” video or planning a “Thrift Store Prom” to promote environmental awareness, Woods ̓endeavors have fur-nished him a reputation as a UNC socialite.

Woods says he has always been a free spirit, but he believes the univer-sity has played an instru-mental role in helping him mold his beatnik nature into an identity. Woods likens himself to the university as an underdog on the up and up.

“As a UNC Bear, I feel like I have a lot to prove. UNC is defi nitely under-rated; it is not a well-known school,” he said. “A lot of

people commute to this school because it works for them. They donʼt choose it; is not their fi rst option, as it wasnʼt even mine, but it grows to be something that you are proud to be a part of.

“UNC is on the up and up. UNC is going somewhere, and what this university will be 10 years from now is far beyond what it is today.”

As a soon-to-be alum, Woods has some parting wisdom for the university.

“UNC needs to do two things,” he said. “One, iden-tify with the community. The second thing is that the administration needs to talk with the students. The ad-ministration needs to com-municate. UNC needs to just trust in itself that it can be fun and that it can be worth-while to go here.”

For the student body he leaves behind, Woods has the following advice:

“If the entire time you are at UNC, all you are think-ing about is home or think-ing about going somewhere else, you are never going to love it, but as soon as you call UNC your home, you are going to learn that it is everything you ever wanted and more.”

Senior outfi elder fi nds his place on baseball team at UNCRachel [email protected]

After starting off his college career at Fort Scott Junior Col-lege in Fort Scott, Kan., senior outfi elder Dylan Banach decided being away from his hometown of Westminster was too diffi cult.

“Iʼm good friends with my par-ents and good friends with my sis-ter, so it s̓ nice to be able to see them more often,” Banach said. “When I was out in Kansas, I saw them once every couple of months.”

Accordingly, Banach made the decision to come to UNC, though Colorado Mesa and Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio were other schools that recruited him. Before Banach decided to play baseball in college, he was actual-ly very invested in another sport.

“I was a big fan of hockey,” Banach said. “I loved hockey,

and I thought I was going to be an NHL hockey player, but the prob-lem was I wasnʼt very good to be honest, but I loved hockey.”

Banach decided he wanted to play baseball and said it was his true calling. His decision to come to the University of Northern Col-orado to play baseball has already made an impact on the team in his second year as a Bear.

“Heʼs a hard worker and weʼre lucky to have him here,” head coach Carl Iwasaki said. “Heʼs good at stealing bases because he works at it, and we need that.”

Banach is 12-for-14 stealing bases and has 27 runs this season. He has a .259 batting average and 18 RBIs on 42 hits. Sophomore Ryan Yamane says he sees Ban-ach as a leader on the team.

“Heʼs a good guy to follow and just knowing that everyday heʼs someone I can talk to if thereʼs

anything I need,” Yamane said. “Heʼs someone who will bring that leadership to the fi eld and thatʼs something I look up to. Be-

ing a sophomore, itʼs good to have guys like that because thatʼs what I want to be eventually.”

Yamane and Banach lived to-

gether this past summer, and se-nior Harrison Lambert is living with Banach this semester and next. Lambert is good friends with Banach and appreciates the work ethic of his teammate and roommate.

“He plays hard and he plays the game the right way, and heʼs had a lot of success this year,” Lambert said.

Banachʼs time at UNC may not be over after this season as he has discussed his future options with Iwasaki.

“Coach Carl asked if I would help coach a little bit, and Iʼve never coached, so I thought ʻHey, I might as well give it a try,ʼ” Banach said.

In the event that Banach does join the coaching staff in the fall, the rest of this season acts as a trial run of sorts to see just how well he can lead while he s̓ still playing.

When shortstop Ryan Yamane describes center fi elder Jensen Park, one metaphor readily came to mind.

“He s̓ just kind of Yin and Yang, you could say,” Yamane said. “On the fi eld, he s̓ very in-tense, but off the fi eld, he s̓ very laid back.”

Park becomes a different person when he steps on the diamond. Off the fi eld, the Hawaiian native is calm, cool and as head coach Carl Iwasaki put it, “happy-go-lucky,” but when he s̓ on the fi eld, he s̓ a pitcher s̓ worst nightmare.

“A scout has told me that he s̓ a fi ve-tool player,” Iwasaki said. “He s̓ only a sopho-more, and he s̓ only going to get bigger and better as the years go by. Right now, he s̓ not a vocal leader, but he leads with his glove

and his bat and his actions and how hard he works.”

Park and Yamane grew up playing against each other in Hawaii, went to rival high schools and played against each other throughout their careers.

However, baseball was never something Park particularly counted on, starting at the very beginning of his time on the diamond.

“I played since tee ball with my dad coaching me,” Park said. “My dad just threw me a bat and glove and said ʻPlay, ̓and I loved it.”

He credits his father Michael for being his inspiration to play the great American pastime.

“My dad really has been like a mentor to me,” Park said. “Heʼll call me after all the games and tell me even when he s̓ not here what he thinks is going on, so he s̓ got great

advice. When Iʼm back home, heʼll throw me BP and it s̓ really relaxed, just helps me ease my mind when I can hit.”

Park is hitting .367 this season, not sur-prising because even in high school, he hit at a torrid rate. At ʻIolani High School in Kaneohe, Hawaii, Park was named to the All-State Second Team and First-Team All-Conference team as a junior, the year he led his team to the 2009 ILH Championship. He hit .464 that year.

Last season, as a freshman, he was named to the 2012 Louisville Slugger All-American team, along with the Great West Conference Second Team.

He also earned the nickname “Flyin ̓Ha-waiian,” after Boston Red Sox outfi elder Shane Victorino. The comparisons to Ben Stivers | The Mirror

Sophomore outfi elder Jensen Park pops up after a slide in Sunday’s 4-3 loss to Great West Conference opponent Utah Valley.

Sophomore shortstop steps into leadership position

Michael [email protected]

Kaitlin Flynn is a talker. UNCʼs sophomore shortstop speaks a mile a minute, constantly communicating with her teammates on the fi eld and in the dugout, offering encouragement at every challenge and cracking jokes when the tension is palpable.

“Flynn can talk with anybody,” head coach Shana Easley said. “Sheʼs really good at motivating and cheer-ing and sheʼs also beyond all that. Sheʼs someone in the dugout and on the fi eld if weʼre in a tough spot, sheʼs going to go to them and make them laugh or whatever she needs to do to alleviate that.”

The position of shortstop naturally demands a vocal leader, and Flynn is eager to meet that request with her partner in crime, second base-man Melissa Marcovecchio, a fellow sophomore.

“As a shortstop, I try to get in-volved with everybody on the team,” Flynn said. “I try to make sure Iʼm communicating with everyone. You just try to keep everyone close and have that fl ow together. I think a lot of us do. Me and Melissa, I love play-ing shortstop and second base with her because weʼre always just talk-ing. We make jokes sometimes just to keep each other calm.”

That connection between former summer softball league rivals is vital

to the University of Northern Colo-radoʼs success, as communication up the middle of the diamond can help make a diffi cult play simpler. Marc-ovecchio says the connection began last year when the two lived together, and has grown to function with even just a glance.

“We werenʼt in the same room but we were suitemates, so I got to know her really well there,” she said. “On the fi eld, we have this special connec-tion. Iʼve never had a connection with anyone else like I have with Flynn. I could seriously look at her and sheʼll know what Iʼm saying.”

But Flynnʼs communication doesnʼt stop at her partner in the mid-dle infi eld. Easley called her a “glue” player for the Bears – someone who is an integral character in team chem-istry.

“I think that sheʼs just born with that quality, and thatʼs something you want from a demanding position like shortstop,” Easley said. “I think thatʼs her best quality.”

A product of Roosevelt High School and a Johnstown native, Flynn says she has enjoyed the close prox-imity to home because it allows her friends and family to support her and the rest of the Bears.

“I just like the fact that people from my high school or people I was close to can come and watch us play and sit on the hill,” she said. “I just think people like to be able to come out here and watch us. Weʼve had our good moments, and I think we play really well at home.”

Even at the top of the hill behind home plate, Johnstownians can like-ly hear Flynn chatter with her UNC teammates, but she endeavors to take on an even greater leadership role through a positive attitude.

“I want to become a stronger lead-er,” she said. “I get down on myself—I really want to improve that, just be able to pick myself back up and help everyone else at the same time.”

Athletes provide more than on-fi eld contributionsMichael [email protected]

The classic stereotype of athletes is that they are in college simply because of their physical abili-ties. Three UNC senior athletes in particular are ac-tively disproving that presumption.

B a s e b a l l ʼ s Ben Packard and Brooks Schneider were named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District 7 team while Jamie Pollack was named to the softball version of the same team.

Schneider (3.64 GPA), an infi elder for the University of Northern Col-orado and a sport and exercise sci-ence major, gave an example of that stereotype at work, noting that it was a surprise to him.

“Last year, I actually had a girl come up to me—she saw me walk-ing into the classroom—and she was like, ʻYou actually go to class? ̓ And that just kind of rattled me a little bit,” he said.

Packard (4.0) is a gradu-ate student in the biological sciences program and is hop-ing to go to medical school next year.

Schneider and Packard, who are close off the fi eld, keep each other in check, ac-cording to the fi rst baseman Packard.

“I think just having this friendship and the way we do things, it just helps us in every aspect,” he said. “There are some times when it s̓ like, ʻI donʼt want to go to weights, ̓or, ʻI donʼt want to studyʼ, but the other guy s̓ like, ʻWell, Iʼm going to weights, ̓ or, ʻIʼm going to

go study, ̓ so it s̓ like, ʻAll right, Iʼm going with you.ʼ”

Pollack (3.73) said she s̓ glad to be honored with an award that recognizes her

work on the fi eld and in the class-room.

“Nobody re-ally expects us to do well in the classroom, but it s̓ really nice that there s̓ an award that com-bines both of them and that s̓ a huge honor to be

acknowledged both in soft-ball and in my grades,” she said.

Softball head coach Sha-na Easley said she sees the fi rst baseman Pollack as a

leader and hopes her devotion to her dietetics and nutrition major serves as a model for younger play-ers on the team.

“Jamie is an example of a senior, a leader that s̓ getting what we need to get done in the

classroom to be complete student-athletes,” Easley said. “Her in that senior leadership position is exactly what you want to fi lter down to the rest of the team.”

The softball team has a history of performing in the classroom, as the Bears fi nished second among all NCAA softball teams in GPA for the 2011-2012 school year at 3.603, trailing only Robert Morris University in all NCAA divisions.

Baseball head coach Carl Iwasaki said he and his staff also place an emphasis on academics.

“Weʼre passionate about teaching the game, but there s̓ so much more importance to ʻstudent-athletes,ʼ” he said. “It s̓ ʻcollege baseball, ̓ not ʻbaseball college.ʼ”

Ben Packard

Park looks toward the future, hopes for a career playing baseballVictorino doesnʼt stop there.

“When youʼre from a small place like that, and you have an opportunity to play Division I baseball, or Major League Baseball, you take full advantage of that, because that s̓ representing your state,” Iwasaki said. “These guys take it pretty

seriously, and that s̓ kind of cool.”As for his postgraduate career, Park

says he has a couple of options. If the majors donʼt pan out, he s̓ ma-

joring in athletic training and hopes to open his own fi tness shop.

“I was just hoping to fi nd some-where to work back in Hawaii,” Park said. “Iʼd love to live back home, but

it s̓ pretty expensive, so itʼd have to be a pretty good job.”

He said he wants to try to play pro-fessionally if it s̓ in the cards.

“Iʼd love to play anywhere,” Park said. “Honestly, I have no idea where I stand with that or how people think Iʼm projected to do, but I hope for the best.”

Alexander [email protected]

Soon has never been soon enough for Paige Flores, and to say she is motivated may be more than an understatement.

At the ripe age of 19, Flores will be walking the stage today to accept a bachelorʼs degree in environmental studies and sustainability with a minor in economics after only three years. Graduating early has become a trend for Flores, who graduated from Greeley Central High School at 16.

Attending UNC may have been predestined for Flores, whose collective alma maters from elemen-tary school on are all lo-cated within Greeley only a few miles from each other.

Flores accumulated a

large number of elective credits by participating in orchestra during the hours before and after school while at Greeley Central. Her amplitude of elective credits allowed her to grad-uate early.

“My freshman year was pretty much my honey-moon for college. It was probably the best time ever,” said Flores, fondly

recalling her time in South Hall living with her dream roommates.

Flores is also appre-ciative of her experience working as a guide for new student orientation.

Flores started at the University of Northern Colorado as a business major before switching to environmental studies and sustainability, but a switch of majors did not hinder her rapid procession through college, and she has no regrets.

“I never really thought about sustainability before coming to UNC, and I nev-er thought I would go in to something like that,” Flores said.

In the future, Flores would like to work in re-source management and possibly pursue a career in environmental policy.

Flores is not daunted by the current state of the job market, but she does worry that necessity may force her to settle for a job that is not related to her degree. In the meantime, she is pursu-ing an internship in the environmental department at the Colorado Department of Transportation and con-sidering graduate school.

As a graduate, Flores urges underclassmen to pursue their passions and not to be deterred by parental pressure or the ap-peal of money.

“Go to school for what you want to go school for. Donʼt focus on the money you are going to make later; donʼt focus on what your parents want you to go to school for,” she said. “I had a lot of friends who had problems like that who were miserable.”

Flores managed to fi nish her degree in six semesters by taking 18 credits each of her fi rst four semesters. In addition to her hefty course load, Flores also worked, all the while maintaining an active social life, frequently attending concerts in Fort Collins and Boulder.

Refl ecting on her experience at UNC, Flores expresses a desire to see a stronger relationship between the campus and community.

“Weʼre not a college town,” she said. “Itʼs sad, but I have seen a lot change. It is nice to see that downtown is coming back to life in recent years because when I was grow-ing up downtown was dead.”

After 19 years of fast-paced education, Flores may be ready for a break.

If she does not intern at the Department of Transpor-tation, she would like to take a year off and possibly travel.

Nineteen year old Greeley native earns her bachelor’s degree at UNC

Paige Flores

While at UNC, Flores was a guide for New Student Orientation and worked at the campus book store for a semester.

Time at UNC

She is looking to get a job with the Colorado De-partment of Transportation, otherwise she is looking to take some time off.
