Cont. from p1 Aidan O=Brien and the Coolmore contingent mustalways be respected, and they are represented here bythe lightly raced Adelaide (Galileo {Ire}) in search of yetanother North American Grade I. The bay was secondin Longchamp=s G2 Prix Hocquart on seasonal debutMay 11 before annexing The Curragh=s G3 Gallinule S.by three lengths going a similar distance to this overstablemate and subsequent Group 3 winner MekongRiver (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). He was most recently secondas the favorite with a less-than-perfect trip in RoyalAscot=s G2 King Edward VII S. over an additionalfurlong June 20. AAdelaide is a lovely colt,@ saidO=Brien. AHe's a very good mover with a greattemperament, like many of the Galileos. He's only runfour times to date but has improved with every startand hopefully he'll do so again. He travels well in hisraces so I'd be hopeful of a big run." OTI Racing and Alain Chopard=s Gailo Chop (Fr)(Deportivo {GB}) has won his last four races, includingLonchamp=s Apr. 6 G3 Prix la Force and Apr. 21 G3 Prix Noailles. The bay RNA=d for i425,000 at last month=s GoffsLondon sale, but was subsequently purchased privatelyby legendary Australian trainer Gai Waterhouse, whohas never before had a runner in the States. Cont. p4

Belmont Derby cont. It just wouldn=t be a Grade I turf race without a Kenand Sarah Ramsey colorbearer by Kitten=s Joy, and thefleet-footed Bobby=s Kitten will try to take them as faras he can. Last year=s GIII Pilgrim S. winner and GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile turf third definitely has somequestions to answer at this trip. He proved unable torate effectively going nine panels when fading to 12thas the favorite in Keeneland=s GI Blue Grass S. Apr. 12,but bounced back to take the lucrative Penn Mile withauthority over Global View (Galileo {Ire}) May 31. AHecame out of the Penn Mile well and he's had threebreezes since,@ said trainer Chad Brown. AThe distance

is a question mark, buthe's bred to do it. If herelaxes and Javier[Castellano] gives him agood trip, he should beable to get the extradistance.@ California-based DanceWith Fate (Two Step Salsa) was the beneficiary of thehot Blue Grass pace, anddid not disgrace himselfwhen sixth in the

GI Kentucky Derby. Trainer Peter Eurton has said beforethat the dark bay is probably better over turf andsynthetic surfaces, and if he can see out the 10 panels,he may be America=s best hope.

The Coolmore partners also own Todd Pletchertrainee Gala Award (Bernardini). The $1.55-millionKEESEP yearling annexed Gulfstream=s GIII Palm BeachS. in March before finishing sixth in the Blue Grass. Hebested Flamboyant (Fr) (Peer Gynt {Jpn}) in the localprep for this, the May 26 Pennine Ridge S., by a gamehead. Odds-on choice Mr Speaker (Pulpit) was fifth thatday, but annexed Keeneland=s Apr. 19 GIII CoolmoreLexington S. by four lengths prior to that.

Cont. from p1 "Minorette came to us in terrific shape and made agreat impression in the barn when she arrived over thewinter," said Brown. "From the way she's beentraining, I think she's sitting on a new top and we'revery excited about running her. I like what I've seen ofGoldy Espony. Off her last breeze [five furlongs,1:01.00, June 29] she deserves a spot in the startinggate." Marty Schwartz=s Xcellence (Fr) (Champs Elysees{GB}) is favored at 5-2 on the morning line making herfirst Stateside start for Francois Doumen. A winner ofthe seven-furlong G3 Prix Imprudence over G1SWVorda (Fr) (Orpen) on seasonal debut at Maisons-Laffitte in April, she was third in Longchamp=s G1 Pouled=Essai des Pouliches May 11. Belmont Oaks cont. Xcellence proved she could handle more ground lasttime with a close third in Chantilly=s 2,100-meter G1 Prix de Diane June 15. Juddmonte homebred Flying Jib (GB) (Oasis Dream{GB}) hasn=t yet proven herself at this trip. The lightlyraced filly most recently annexed The Curragh=s G3 Athasi S. May 5 over seven furlongs. Her longestrace, and victory, came in the Oct. 13 Silken Glider S.over a mile at the same venue. "[The distance] has tobe the biggest concern," admitted trainer Dermot Weld."She, as a filly, is very well and she traveled very well, but [the distance] has to be the doubt. She was awinner as a 2-year-old at a mile. This is unknownterritory for her, but she has given every indication thatshe will get the trip." The dead-heat co-winners of Keeneland=s Apr. 5 GI Ashland S. are both here, but they have taken verydifferent paths. Gary and Mary West=s Room Service(More Than Ready) resurfaced in Santa Anita=s GI American Oaks over this same distance May 31, andwas a convincing 2 1/4-length winner. Landaluce EduceStables=s Rosalind (Broken Vow), however, went on tothe May 2 GI Kentucky Oaks, where she did notdisgrace herself in fourth over what is probably not herfavorite surface. The Ken McPeek pupil lost rider KieranFallon at the start of Royal Ascot=s G1 Coronation S.June 20, and looks to atone back on her home soil.

G1 Royal Eclipse S. cont. from p1 Labeled the first Aclash of the generations,@ theEclipse promises a genuine confrontation this time, even if Paul Smith=s G1 Racing Post Trophy winner andG1 Epsom Derby runner-up Kingston Hill (GB)(Mastercraftsman {Ire}) is scratched if the rain fails tomaterialize. Chief amongst the sophomores is SaeedManana=s G1 2000 Guineas hero Night of Thunder (GB)(Dubawi {Ire}), who steps up in trip after his defeat by

Kingman (GB) (InvincibleSpirit {Ire}) in RoyalAscot=s G1 St James=sPalace S. June 17.Successful over sixfurlongs at two, theRichard Hannon traineelooked as if he wouldstay further whencausing an upset in theMay 3 NewmarketClassic, and hissubsequent reversal atthe Royal meeting camewhen he was forced tomake his own running.

AThe fact that he is so relaxed and is very economicalwhen he races will stand him in good stead here, as hegives himself every chance of staying 1 1/4 miles,@Hannon said. AAt Ascot, he was beaten fair and squareby a better horse on the day, and I don=t think youcould say we were unlucky in any way. Hughesie had ajob pulling him up after the line, so that suggests to mehe might be crying out for 1 1/4 miles. My worry is that it might get a bit rougharound the bend, and he=s not massively experienced.@Another set to receive upwards of eight pounds in theweight-for-age scale is Joseph Allen, Susan Magnier,Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith=s War Command (WarFront), who sports cheekpieces in a bid to regain someof the verve that saw him dominate the G2 Coventry S.at Royal Ascot last June. Subsequently successful inthe G2 Futurity S. at The Curragh in August and G1 Dewhurst S. at Newmarket in October, he was onlyninth in the 2000 Guineas before finishing off stronglyto be fourth in the St James=s Palace. He is 11 poundsbetter off than his stable companion Verrazano (MoreThan Ready), who has quickly settled into the Europeanstyle of racing with a third placing in the May 17 G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury, and a second in the June17 G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot. Aidan O=Brienhas won this five times since the turn of the century, and the vibes are strongest for the 4-year-old. AWe=revery happy with War Command and Verrazano, andthink they are progressing well,@ O=Brien said. Godolphin=s Trading Leather (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), whotook last year=s G1 Irish Derby and placed in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S., G1 Juddmonte International and Irish Champion, wasonly third on his seasonal bow in the 12-furlong G2 Jockey Club S. at Newmarket May 3, but JimBolger is expecting a vastly improved show.

ANewmarket was my fault, as I told Kevin [Manning]to hold him up and teach him to settle better, but theypulled up the pace and it was a mess,@ Bolgerexplained. AThis will be a better-run race, so we=rehoping for a good run. It looks a race to savor.@ Theboys in blue also havethe 3-year-old coltTrue Story (GB)(Manduro {Ger}), whois visored for the firsttime afterdisappointing effortsin the G2 Dante S. atYork May 15 and theJune 6 G1 EpsomDerby, when third andseventh respectively.Jockey Kieren Fallonis hoping theheadgear can revive the spark that saw him excite somany when winning Newmarket=s Listed Feilden S. overnine furlongs Apr. 16. AHe=s worked really well in thevisor and is a horse I=ve always really liked,@ Fallon said.AThey did such a good job after he was a bit gassyearly on in his career, but they got him too relaxed andnow we need to switch him back on again. I had topush him to the start at Epsom, which is a good thing--I=d rather that than him be too keen. If he brings his >A=game, he=ll be hard to beat and hopefully he can repayour faith.@Cont. p7

G1 Royal Eclipse S. cont. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum=s Mukhadram(GB) (Shamardal) was third here last year and has sincefinished second in the Mar. 29 G1 Dubai World Cup,but needs to step up on his turf return when fourth inthe Prince of Wales=s. AI don=t think we saw the best ofhim at Royal Ascot, but Saturday should tell us more,@trainer William Haggas told PA Sport. AHe ran in Dubaiin March, but effectively the Prince of Wales's S. washis first run back, and it did not really go as we hadhoped. Admittedly, he was beaten by three of the besthorses around at the moment. He plugged on and in nosense was it a bad run, but we had hoped for more. Ithink this Eclipse is a stronger race than last year--it hasmore depth and the 3-year-olds seem to be a goodcrop. But I also think that Mukhadram is a better horsethan a year ago--he=s much more mature and focused.@

TIZ DARK GETS CLASS TEST IN DWYER Starlight Racing=s Tiz Dark (Tiznow) may have only amaiden win to his credit, but gets the nod on EricDonovan=s morning line as the 6-5 favorite forBelmont=s GIII Dwyer S. Second behind subsequentlystakes-placed Legend (Tiznow) on one-mile debut hereMay 4, the Todd Pletcher trainee romped home by 6 3/4 lengths over track and trip May 25, earning a 97 Beyer Speed Figure. "The colt has shown a lot of

talent in the mornings, specially breezing with someof our older stakes horses, and galloping out with them,@said Pletcher's assistant,Byron Hughes. AWe thoughtthe step up might work outfor him." Kid Cruz (LemonDrop Kid) also earned a 97 Beyer in his last start, butthe 126-pound highweighthas a longer resume than hismain competitor. The former

claimer took Laurel=s Private Terms S. in March andPimlico=s Federico Tesio S. in April, but never lifted ahoof when checking in eighth in the GI Preakness S.May 17. His connections opted for the softer Easy GoerS. AHe needs a little encouragement to getinvolved early,@ said trainer Linda Rice. AIn some of hisraces he was 22 lengths back. LAW AGAINST THE MONARCHYBy James Trotter Though a handful of Grade 1's are still to come onthe South African racing calendar after this weekend, the G1 Vodacom Durban July is the destination towhich all paths lead, and is the climactic pinnacle of thecountry's racing season. As the GI Kentucky Derby isto the U.S. and the G1 Melbourne Cup is to Australia, the Durban July is the one race every owner, trainer, breeder and jockey wants to win. It is the one race that

garners nationalpublic interest--theone race that willsee the winner inheadlinesthroughout SouthAfrica, its nameimmortalized onthe list ofchampions tohave won Africa'srichest race. Nearly 63,000people areexpected to pour

into Durban's Greyville Racecourse today to take part inone of the country's largest and most famous socialevents. Though many will be in attendance more forthe fashion and festivities, those who will have theirattention on the racing will be in for a cracking show. Inaddition to the timeless prestige of a Durban Julyvictory, Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-oldtitles will be up for the taking. The hype leading up to the race has been all aboutthe 3-year-olds, with the top four spots in the betting--and six of the top eight--being filled by members of thesophomore division. This may be partly due to theperceived strength of the 3-year-old crop; however, thetrend has been exacerbated by the fact that a numberof the country's leading older horses are stationedoverseas or are under quarantine to be exported. South Africa's leading older horse Yorker (SAf) (JetMaster {SAf}), for instance, had to begin his series ofquarantines in June in order to participate in next year'sDubai World Cup Carnival. His non-attendance todayhas left the Horse of the Year title up for grabs. Whenthe country's leading female, Beach Beauty (SAf)(Dynasty {SAf}), defected at a late stage to defend hertitle in the G1 Garden Province S. against her own sex,the gates to the July's treasures were opened evenwider for the oncoming 3-year-old invasion.

The 3-Year-Old Invasion... That charge is being led by the two colts currentlyvying for champion sophomore honors--Louis the King(SAf) (Black Minnaloushe) and Legislate (SAf) (Dynasty{SAf}). The former reeled off four consecutive victoriesin Johannesburg, including the South African TripleCrown and two Grade 1's before being conquered byLegislate last out when a close-up third in the G1 DailyNews 2000 May 31. Louis theKing turned for home in lastplace that day and never had aclean passage up the straight, and is certainly better than theresult suggests. 'Louis' hasalready proven that he is astenacious as he is talented. Hehas no stamina doubts, and isremarkably consistent. If anyonebeats him today, they will haveto work for it. Legislate's victory in the G1 Daily News 2000 fueled analready lofty reputationestablished with an easy G1 Cape Derby win Feb. 1 andhis G2 KZN Guineas score May3. After pulling early in the Daily News 2000 and sittingnear the tail of the field alongside Louis the King,Legislate was allowed to make his run around horsesentering the straight and exploded to the front. Once onthe lead, however, he hung towards the inside andbegun to ease down, almost being caught in the finalstrides by the late-finishing Rake's Chestnut (SAf)(Horse Chestnut {SAf}). Whether it was fitness, immaturity, or the jockey's miscalculation that day thatcaused him to gear down is the question that should beanswered today, and that answer may have a majorimpact on the result. The one thing that is certain is

that trainer Justin Snaith'scharge has class in abundance, and his name would not look outof place if it were to join hissire=s on the Durban July roll ofhonor. Counting againstLegislate, however, is that hemust concede weight to all ofhis contemporaries and defyhistory in carrying the mostweight by a 3-year-old to victoryin the Durban July. The next two 3-year-olds inthe betting, Futura (SAf)

(Dynasty {SAf}) and Rake's Chestnut, are both lightlyraced and somewhat unknown quantities. Rake'sChestnut looked out of place coming into the DailyNews 2000, having only one victory to his name fromthree starts. Two-time Durban July winning trainerGeoff Woodruff has made it clear that he sees Louis theKing as his main July hope over Rake's Chestnut;however, this improving son of South African iconHorse Chestnut (SAf) has appeared to improve as thedistances increase, and it would not be a shock to findhim in the winner's circle. Durban July cont. Low weight will be carried by Futura, whose inclusionin the race brought with it an air of controversy.Winning four of his first five starts in progressivefashion, he had been tipped as a likely July candidatelong before taking on stakes company for the first time. The Durban July is a handicap, and so connectionswere taking the shrewd gamble of qualifying for theJuly under the lowest possible weight. The pathchosen, therefore, was to avoid the Classics and slip inthe side door by facing up against older handicappers inthe G3 Cup Trial--a recognized prep race for the DurbanJuly. When Futura lost that race by a long head June 7,it appeared as though that plan had gone up in flames.Last week, however, when the final field was unveiled,he had scraped in. Futura is a colt that has shownglimpses of high-class ability, and is one who will likelyimprove with the extra distance he tries today. Hereceives up to seven pounds from his peers. Experience Over Youth... The older brigade is led by triple Grade 1 winnerCapetown Noir (SAf) (Western Winter), who wearsblinkers for the first time after not appearing up to hisbest form in his last two starts--a third in a Grade 2here May 3 and a most recent fourth in the G1 GoldChallenge June 7. Though the Dean Kannemeyer

charge did win the G1 CapeDerby over 2000 meters lastyear, his best form has looked tobe over a mile, and the July's2200-meter distance still holdsmany stamina doubts for him. Ahorse who should see out thetrip is Gold Challenge winnerKing of Pain (SAf) (Greys Inn);however, in the last 30 years, only three horses have won theJuly with 128 pounds or more, and so a victory under topweight is no easy task. Trainer Sean Tarry has wonthe last two runnings of theDurban July for his primaryowner, Chris van Niekerk, and

the pair have two arrows in their bow this year: Halvethe Deficit (SAf) (Right Approach {GB}) and WhitelineFever (SAf) (Right Approach {GB}). Both horses havewon Grade 2's this past season and come into the racewith form; however, due to his lower weight and betterrecord over the distance, Halve the Deficit, winner ofthe G2 Colorado King S. Apr. 5 and most recentlysecond in the G3 Jubilee H. June 14, is currently thepick of the market. Only three fillies have won the July in the last 30years, and four have the chance to join that exulted listtoday, with dual Grade 1-winning sophomore In theFast Lane (SAf) (Jet Master {Saf}), last year=s TripleTiara winner Cherry on the Top (SAf) (Tiger Ridge) andMike de Kock's multiple group-winning and Group 1-placed Espumanti (GB) (Dansili {GB}) all in withchances. THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS As the sky changed from a murky blue to a pale pink, the contenders for the G1 Vodacom Durban Julystretched their legs at Clairwood Racecourse for thelast time yesterday, in more ways than one. Clairwoodhas been sold, and next year the white paddocks, where impatient Thoroughbreds are now circling, willno longer exist. Clairwood does not have the vistas thatthe Summerveld training center offers, but it has acharm all its own; from the tiny hut, where copiousamounts of coffee and rusks were dispensed everymorning, to the pair of blue cranes majestically struttingup and down the grass hoping to catch some insects inthe wake of the passing horses. Dawn brought the tractors out onto the sand track, and behind them came a steady procession of topcontenders for the Durban July, all vying to be the firstto etch their footprints onto the pristine sand. KarlNeisius isn't a veteran jockey for nothing; hence, itcame as no surprise to see the familiar white blaze ofCapetown Noir (SAf) (Western Winter) stealing a marchon his rivals. The black colt moved easily under Neisius, going at a steady canter while hard-held. CapetownNoir certainly has the credentials to greet the judge inthe premier race, but in the past the short run in atGreyville has been his nemesis. The long-striding coltprefers around 600 meters to build up steadily to topspeed, and the 450 meter home stretch of Greyville hasseen him caught short before. Neisius was confidentthe addition of blinkers for the first time will make adifference, and the colt certainly looked a picture ofhealth. Geoff Woodruff's string were out next, with MasterSabina (SAf) (Jet Master {SAf}), his runner in the G3The tabGOLD 2200 on the July undercard, leading theway under assistant Thomas van Rensburg.

Thomas was next entrusted with July favorite LouisThe King (SAf) (Black Minnaloushe), who he expertlyguided around the track at a steady half-pace. TheTriple Crown winner was pulling hard and flew over thetrack, ears pricked. Beingentrusted with the finalworkout of the rulingfavorite is seriousbusiness, and the look offierce concentration onVan Rensburg's face waspriceless. Louis The Kingticks all the boxes anddeserves to be favorite. He may, however, behampered by the lack ofpace in the race, forcingjockey Kevin Shea to change tactics. He could, though,be helped by the reduction in field size from 20 to 16.This lessens the impact of Louis The King's draw inbarrier 10, and as long as Shea has the colt wellpositioned as the field swings for home, the race couldbe his. Stiff competition is likely to come from pro-temchampion trainer Justin Snaith's two 3-year-olds,Legislate (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}) and In The Fast Lane(SAf) (Jet Master {SAf}). Legislate won the G1 InvestecCape Derby and the G1 Daily News 2000 withconsummate ease. He is good enough to win the July, but a slowly run race would not count in his favor.Richard Fourie, Snaith's stable jockey, has chosen toride Legislate, but In The Fast Lane cannot bediscounted. The filly has a light weight of 119 poundsand the services of Grant van Niekerk, one of SouthAfrica=s most exciting young riders. Woodruff also sends out Rake's Chestnut (SAf)(Horse Chestnut {SAf}), second in the G1 Daily Newsto Legislate. The chestnut is still gangly, however, andhas yet to learn how to settle, fighting race rider AntonMarcus all the way down the track. He should be in thethick of things at thebusiness end of therace, but is more likelyto be a very dangerouscontender next year.Tellina (SAf) (Silvano{Ger}) rounded offWoodruff's trio ofVodacom Durban Julycontenders as the sunrose above the bluegums trees. All that is left is toremember that last year, trainer Sean Tarry shipped inthe day before with a lightly weighted horse calledHeavy Metal (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}). Tarry prefers to flyunder the radar, and Heavy Metal had skirted thepopular lead-up races, coming into the VodacomDurban July on a light weight and without anybodytaking notice. Heavy Metal duly won the Durban Julyunder S'Manga Khumalo. Cont. 15

Trackside with Liesl King cont. This year, Tarry's Halve The Deficit (SAf) (RightApproach {GB}) has followed the same pattern, andwas still on the float down as the morning's trackworkcame to an end. Tarry has ensured that Halve TheDeficit has done just enough to qualify withoutcatching the handicapper=s or the public's attention. The 5-year-old gelding, who was last seen finishingsecond in the G3 Jubilee H. June 14, prefers a slowpace, and while he is not quite in the league ofLegislate or Louis The King, he may just surprise us alland deliver Tarry's third straight victory.
