A number of religious and social activities and blood donation cam- paigns were conducted to Mark the 27 anniversary of the disappear- ance of Upali Wijewardene, the Founder Chairman of the Upali Group on Saturday (13). Asked whether the breakaway LTTE faction, TMVP would contest the polls on the UPFA ticket, Premjayantha expressed confidence that even if Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanasathurai Chandrakanthan contested on its own, he would extend his support to the govern- ment in Parliament. He said that they would adopt a different strategy in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Former JVP heavyweight Nandana Gunatilleke would contest on the UPFA ticket from the Kalutara district, he said. Minister Premjayantha acknowledged that Kalutara would be perhaps the toughest electoral district to contest due to many top seasoned campaigners being in the fray. Among the candidates vying for the Kalutara district represented by 10 mem- bers, are Kumar Welgama, Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Messrs Mahinda Samarasinghe, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Nirmala Kotelawala, Nandana Gunatilleke, Jayantha Samaraweera and the Prime Minister’s son, Vidura Wickremanayake. UPFA sources said that they could comfortably win the district to secure six seats. He said that his party would request the Election Commissioner to introduce new security measures at the poll counting centres for the next General Election. “The Government talks of a two third majority in the next election. This will remain a dis- tant dream. They would not even get a simple major- ity,” he said. Referring to All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general sec- retary Jayalalitha’s description of his stand that the Election Commission should abide by the dic- tates of the ruling party as “anti-democratic,” the Chief Minister said she had issued a statement as if the people of the State had forgotten the instances of ‘gherao’ of the then Chief Election Commissioner T.N. The Mahanayaka Theros have said that they were intervening in the Sarath Fonseka affair in keeping with the tradition that the Maha Sangha of the ancient times followed as regards disputes between the coun- try’s rulers and others. The Mahanayaka Theros have cited as example of intervention of the Maha Sangha in a dispute between King Dutugemunu and his brother Tissa. Similarly Ven. Weliwita Asarana Sarana Saranangkara, Wariyapola Sri Sumangala and Migettuwatta Sri Sumangala Theros came forward at times of national crisis according to recorded history. Similarly, the Sangha had felt the need to come forward at this moment to settle dispute between the government and a former commander of the army, the prelates have said. The Mahanayaka Theros have told President Mahinda Rajapaksa that the utterances by the retired General Fonseka during the election as a rival candi- date should be ignored as the former LTTE terrorists such as Karuna Amman and Pillaiyan who even attacked the Dalada Maligawa and the Sri Maha Bodhi killing and maiming many people had been par- doned and accommodated in the government ranks. He said that the Tamil Diaspora was still trying to revive the LTTE, though the group had been defeat- ed militarily. He said that the Army was maintaining a heavy presence in the region to meet any eventuali- ty. Commenting on the recently concluded presiden- tial polls, he said that the Army would help the police to maintain law and order during the upcoming par- liamentary polls. While being appreciative of the government for improving the living conditions of the forces, he said that the Army would concentrate on training this year as they were fully occupied with military operations over the past three years. He also discussed the steps that had been taken to look after the war wounded, particularly centres at provincial level with the first one established at Anuradhapura.(SF) (Yatinuwara Pradeshiya Sabha member Thushara Swarnathilake), Kurunegala (M. C. Jayaratne) and Kalutara (prematurely retired Flight Lieutenant Shantha Jayathilake). Jayathilake, who had been with the SLAF Regiment, quit the service after receiving injuries in a bomb blast in the Morawewa area. He is on the staff of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Responding to The Island queries, he said that the JHU had nom- inated Ven. Ellawela Medhananda and Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thera as national list MPs. The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) will field a candidate each for Colombo, Gampaha, Kurunegala, Hambantota, Anuradhapura, Kandy, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya and Digamadulla districts. The MEP seeks one national list slot. Over 20 ex-UNP MPs, including Keheliya Rambukwella (Kandy), Mahinda Samarasinghe (Kalutara), Dr. Rajitha Senaratne (Kalutara), Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena (Matara), Milinda Moragoda (Colombo), Mohamed Faizer Mustapha (Kandy), Mahinda Ratnathilake (Ratnapura) and Susantha Punchinilame (Ratnapura) will also contest on the UPFA ticket. But Moragoda is contesting as the leader of the Sri Lanka National Congress. He is seeking two more slots to contest the polls. Veteran politician M. H. Mohamed, the leader of the now defunct UNP (Democratic Group) told The Island yester- day that he was, too old to contest a national elec- tion. The former Speaker said that he might seek a national list seat but indi- cated no final decision had been taken. UPFA sources told The Island that the alliance would not be able to accommodate the number of candi- dates as required by some parties in the five-party Socialist Alliance. Sources said that the call for 11 slots by the LSSP to contest Kegalle, Galle, Kalutara, Moneragala, Matale, Hambantota, Polonnaruwa, Digamadulla, Trincomalee, Jaffna and Puttalam was unrealistic. Sources said the Communist Party, too, had sought six slots to contest Matara, Galle, Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy and Anuradhapura, whereas Vasudeva Nanayakkara, leader of the Democratic Left Front wants two slots in Digamadulla. Nanayakkra wants to contest from the Ratnapura District. Sri Lanka Mahajana Pakshaya leader Ranjith Navaratne plans to con- test from the Kurunegala district. Sources said the Socialist Alliance was asking for over 20 slots to contest the polls and that request could not be met without jeopardising pre-poll arrangements with other politi- cal parties and other candidates. Former National List MP Mervyn Silva told The Island that he would con- test from the Gampaha District, though he entered Parliament through the national list previously. The then President Chandrika Kumaratunga appointed him through the national list after he failed to muster the required support in the Colombo District. Forget... From page 1 JVP...
