Dear Editor,Now we have a fresh topic to

argue about... Organ Donation.I Personally think, it is a very

sensitive topic... very intimate and personal. When it comes to saving our own life or that of a dear one, we bend n break rules. Can we see our child, parents siblings or spouse die? I guess it is circumstances that one is guided by. why are we making this a religious issue? I should be left to an individual. There cannot be a rule. please print this little note of mine, as I wish to share it with our readers and tell them, please do not make an issue of everything. leave it to the individual and his circumstances.Your Sincerely,Af Dastur

Dear Editor,With reference to my last write

up in P.T. on the issue of litigation against a senior citizen Ms. Baghwalla by the BPP since 20 years for a mere inter connecting door from the bedroom to the toilet. In the Board meeting of November 18, 2014. It is learnt that the Trustees of the BPP in their Board meeting by a vote of majority have decided to review all such litigations on a case to case merit basis only. This step will effectively cut down on litigation cost. I hope some Trustees does not become a spoilsport and stop this.

The second safe located in the Board room is also opened by 2 staff members along with a Trustee 2 weeks back and the inventory was in process. I am not aware what is the mahurat date for the other safe to be opened. The police will delay the investigations because this is not a celebrity case. The Charity Commissioner will delay hearing because the Charity Commissioner has a roof over his head and does have any idea of the sufferings of our Community. If only due process was followed and transparency maintained this would not have happened.

What we have been saying since months about the functioning of BPP is now gaining momentum and

how they have been taken for a ride with free food packets and hollow promises. We cannot allow them to waste another year on underperformance. The Trustees either perform or perish. The need of the hour is good governance. This time food packets & shamianas will not work.

Cawas’s resignation has opened another Pandora’s Box which I have been saying all along in P.T. about parroted CEO’s and Executives. Mr. B. T. Dastur was the last CEO who was a thorough professional and did not take crap from any of the Trustees and stood ground on what he thought was in the best interest of the BPP. He had to resign because he refused to play the role of a parrot. The late Mehli - though

because he lacked administrative qualities which are a must - survived because he was ready to parrot what was told, ready to sign what was put forward to him, ready for compromises. Thus the BPP was run by a Trustee and 2 trusted aides, the CEO and the Housing Executive. After Mr. Mehli’s sad demise The Senior Housing Executive continued to toe his line and thus survived had I and another Trustees not intervened. The said senior suspended Housing Executive misused his power and position for personal gains which are on record

Executive was suspended by a vote of majority. Some Trustees made all efforts to retain the Sr. Housing

reached and he was suspended but on a condition that he would sit at home but receive his full salary + perks. The price BPP paid to silence a parrot, thus from July until this day he continues to get his salary delivered at home. This is the Community Funds which the Trustee is blowing up to maintain skeletons from further falling. The Trustees have no inclination to appoint a CEO because they want control and were looking at someone like a acting CEO without powers. Next

option was Cawas who the Trustee thought could be manipulated but that did not happen because he refused to toe the line of Trustees and hence the resignation. The next victim is Aspi Sarkari but rest assured no CEO will be appointed. Can you picture a situation where in the CEO sounds off the Trustees for interfering in his work and with the staff? It hurts their ego badly. There is no team work. It is my way or highway. There is complete, mismanagement and lack of professionalism. Consider this scenario.

report card. Whom do we go to for help, support, solutions? Too much is being written about and it’s time for Trustees to pull up their socks. The Trust was not formed to promote Cronies. Regards,Arzan J. Ghadially

were massive illegal alterations/additions by a certain lady who carried out the work without anyone objecting to her audacity. Were the Trustees sleeping? The building structure has been weakened; so many Parsi lives in the building have been endangered, all because of one arrogant woman, whom the Trustees are favouring why? Can they justify? The same lady and her family members are openly violating clauses 6 & 7 of Bombay Parsi Punchayet leave & licence agreement, and the Trustees turns blind eyes.

I think it’s high time the Hon’ble Donors & Community members come together and remove the corrupt / womanizers Trustees from our Apex Body.

this fabulous and heart warming idea. Find an empty jar and begin the exercise in January…Start writing notes to yourself and putting them in this jar. Each note should describe or remind you about a good thing that happened or milestone for you. Write and jar it as soon as it happens.

On New Years Eve 2016,open the jar and enjoy the memories of a great year. This could also be done in office or with your friends.

If I have to make a mental memory jar of all that 2014 has been it would be stuffed with happy Parsi Times moments with my team, meeting wonderful Readers in my office and covering stories that inspired me and served as inspiration to everyone else too.

2014 has been the year Parsi Times shifted into the vendor system and continued to grow into a much-loved member of the Community. 2014 has also been a year of growth, change and finding strength for me personally, and no jar in the world could possibly contain the millions of moments I am thankful for in the past 12 months!

Take time this weekend to grab your family and friends and head to The Happy Home and School for the Blind at Worli where their Exhibition ‘Inner Vision’ is taking place. Here the visually impaired residents create well crafted items that really make Christmas gifting and presents for your loved ones a tad bit more special. We always say ‘it is the thought that counts’… and good thoughts for those less privileged than you are always appreciated.

Our condolences to the family of Noshir and Nargish Irani who are in mourning because of the untimely and unfair demise of their parents who were living their golden years out on their Chickoo farm in Vangaon. Our hearts go out to them in this hard and tough time.

Freyan.

The Cumballa Hill High School has its origin in the Cumballa Hill

English School for infants in 1940 founded by my mother Late Mrs. Dolly H. Forbes”, said Mrs Bapsy Chubb, the ex-Principal and now, Managing Partner of Cumballa Hill High School. Mrs Chubb has been a part of this school since 1959. She became the Headmistress in 1962 and then the Principal in 1980. She adds, “In 1962 it became the Cumballa Hill High School with the course of studies designed to take students upto the State Board S.S.C. Exam”. Originally situated at Kemps Corner it now has 2 premises Secondary and Primary.P.T.: You have been teaching for more than forty years, what kind of a paradigm shift do you see in today’s generation?

Mrs. Chubb: Yesteryear, life was certainly simpler, texts better and children more family-oriented. The world has changed and everything is competitive. We do not get the same group of young adults who studied in 80s and 90s. This is a different breed, a different culture. Technology is great but it should not restrict reading habits (oh! how we loved our novels and books). Computerized knowledge helps, but should not take over completely.Students must be encouraged to engage with the real world.

This is a crucial part of accepting challenges that enrich classroom teaching. Through involvement comes empowerment so we see that our resources provide good quality education at all stages and at the same time, level

P.T.: “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow” says John Dewey. ‘Technology’ is the tomorrow for our children, so how

does the school make use of technology in classrooms?Mrs. Chubb: Internet is used by every student during their ICT lectures. Students also learn to write programmes and give presentations on the computer. We have special rooms for Information Technology with good trained faculty. In all subjects, students are encouraged to develop projects where information is sought. Teachers also use internet to explain certain concepts on laptops and there are visual aids.

We also have a dedicated website for the school, www.cumballahillhighschool.orgP.T.: Do you have Parsi children studying in this school? Does your school conduct any religious classes?Mrs. Chubb: Yes, we do have Parsi children studying in this school. Although, there are no religious classes are conducted in the school but a few Parsi children get training in their religion privately. Also, we are proud of 7 Naver Martabs who readily perform our school or home Jashans. P.T.: How would you gauge a Parsi child’s performance?Mrs. Chubb: With children of all castes andcreeds the

Parsi parents can be more focused (depending on their background) to add positive social characteristics for an all-round performance. Being a co-educational school, we are normally delighted by the bonhomie that exists in all spheres of school life, and the

P.T.: What part do the teachers play in imbibing values in the students of this school?Mrs. Chubb: At Cumballa Hill we ‘believe’ in teachers and encourage them to use their own diverse methods of achieving excellence. A school must support the Staff to stay abreast of best practices, courses, keen participation-all this improves teaching. Goals are left to their individual creativity. Encourage rather than police! This really rewards a good teacher to be passionate about her job.

The end result is to produce disciplined value-oriented

scholars supporting academic infrastructure. When an individual wishes to go ahead in life there must be a support system that helps him/her to do so. We personalize and enrich learning process conveys concepts, ideas, thoughts and culture.

Mrs. Bapsy Chubb, concluded the interview with a heartfelt message, she said, “We motivate and encourage our boys and girls to project an image that impresses. Students in workshops and assemblies must stand up tall. Basic values of principles, ethics and integrity should be combined with national integration and

Parsi Point06SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2014

Iwas sitting in the middle of a meeting in New Delhi when the news about the ghastly

murder of an elderly couple in Dahanu reached the table. The majority seated at the table were Community members and we shuddered and expressed our sorrow at the thought of this defenseless couple being snatched from life in such a

Of course, when it comes to Parsi elders living alone, there are preconceived notions one just cannot argue with. Prima facie evidence points to an elderly couple living in isolation on acres of prime property,

for unscrupulous builders who circle constantly like vultures, casting dark, looming shadows on old age.

Of course, till things are put in place by the police and investigators, we are in no position to assume this was the handy work of the bullies in the builder world. Besides on speaking with another Chikoo plantation owner, I found out that without the Status of the Land changing from Orchard to Residential, nothing can be done on the hundreds of acres of prime plantation property.

Environmental groups have been working furiously to prevent the builders from

changing this Status in areas like Vangoan, where Noshir and Nargish lived and also areas like Dahanu that offers some green respite smack bang in the middle of the heavily industrialized Umargaon and Boisar. It is Chikoos from these areas which make it to the famous Chickoo Festival each year.

So if it wasn’t the circling vultures of the builder Community that cold heartedly stabbed the old man with a walker in the back and cut off the ears of his wife, we are left trying to struggle with robbery as a motivation for death… or maybe something more sinister like revenge?

According to a grieving neighbour I spoke with as soon as the Paidast was over on Friday morning, Mr. and Mrs. Irani had just spent months in USA enjoying the company of their son Adil, a Cardiologist based out of Los Angeles. They returned recently accompanied by their son, who left a few days ago, only to return this week for his parents’ funeral. Their other child, daughter Tanaaz lives with her family in Mumbai itself.

Alarm bells never went off in Nargish Aunty’s mind when her power lines were cut a few days ago. She called the electrician who informed her that it was a

On the gruesome evening of Tuesday the 9th of December, Noshir was in the kitchen when an assailant stabbed him in the head and killed him. His wife was probably coming home from her walk when she was attacked similarly in the garden area and left to bleed to death.

When her mothers’ phone was not reachable at 7:45 in the

evening, their worried daughter requested the house help to check in on her old parents early the next morning, but it was too late.

According to sources, this might have been an act of pure revenge by a 24 year old local boy. The boy, who 12 years back at the age of 12 had been caught sneaking into the couples’ home and robbing small items and food. The couple had him reprimanded by the police at the time and the incident had been forgotten. The boy may have, as we hear from neighbours, been lying in wait to take his revenge. Police might be scouring areas east of Vangaon, near the Dhabla area where the boy allegedly lives with his Uncle who also works at a Chickoo farm owned by another Irani member of the Community.

All this is just speculation and the police are looking

furiously for him or any other leads in the sad case.

Over 30 years ago, Noshir Irani sold his bakery in Kalyan and came with his wife to Vangaon where they built a house on their Chickoo plantation and settled in to a life of greenery and peace. They have been taken away from family, friends and the world in one horrendous coldblooded act. Whatever the motives, we hope and pray that justice is swift and served well. Till then let us all make arrangements for better security for those who live alone and in sparsely populated areas.

Over the next few days, newspapers across the Country will follow the story and relay it to Readers. Each one, I hope shall take from it not only a sense of loss and sympathy for the Iranis but also a thought and genuine concern for the safety of their own loved ones.

God brings us together. Religion breaks us apart.” Quite

meaningful. The world is right about the fact that there’s only one God, but they’re mistaken if they believe there’s no real religion.

The precise date of the founding of Zoroastrianism is uncertain, but an approximate date of 1500–1200 BCE has been established through archaeological evidence. Zoroastrianism being the oldest religion founded by the prophet Zoroaster shows evidence that other religions are just a mirroring image of this ancient religion. Zoroaster spread the ideas of the mighty Persian God, Ahura Mazda. From Zoroaster’s preaching and Zoroastrianism came Judaism, Gnosticism, Christianity and Islam.

According to Religious history several events, sculptures, and virtuous prophets and their views have a very strong co relation with those of Zoroaster and Zoroastrianism. Zoroastrianism was founded in Persia (Present day Iran) which is situated in the Middle-East and so were Judaism (1300 BC), Christianity (1st century C.E), and Islam (622 CE) came from the middle east.

Zoroastrianism is uniquely important in the history of religion because of its formative links to both Western Abrahamic and Eastern Dharmic religious traditions. For example, one of the popular strains within Zoroastrianism considers both good and evil as creations of God. Christians have also adapted the idea of respect and kindness towards all living

things and condemnation of the oppression of human beings, cruelty against animals

Zoroastrianism. Hard work and charity is essential. Laziness and sloth are frowned upon. Zoroastrians are encouraged to part with a little of what would otherwise be their own. Many religions, especially Christianity follow this concept in the form of various charities.

Zoroastrianism is thought

through the Prophet Daniel’s close association with the Achaeamenid kings (Cambyses I, Cyrus the Great, Cambyses II and Darius the Great).

In addition, Zoroastrianism

eastern Dharmic religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. This is expressed through the Vedic texts of Dharma. Like the historical Vedic religion, which is the historical predecessor of Hinduism,

Zoroastrianism a l s o derives from the religious principles of Indo-Iranian times. As such, and although Zoroastrianism is not considered a Dharmic religion, it is not

concepts similar to dharma in the Gathas as well. The very common concept of good and evil was generated by Zoroastrianism and is adapted by every lasting religion.

Zoroastrians recognize evil as “Angra Mainyu”, Christians identify it as “Satan”, and Islam

Another adaptation by other religions from Zoroastrianism is their faith in guardian angels. There are Guardian Angels of a sort in Zoroastrianism. These

are known as the Fravashi. Every human being is born with a Fravashi to help him distinguish right from wrong.

Zoroastrianism is an ancient religion which is the roots of several other

religions. It’s as deep as England. All other religions only

pure qualities.

to quote any religious scriptures, I personally feel the learned Ervard Saheb has goofed up by confusing dead body with Urvan (Ruvan). In my humble opinion the Urvan is Amarg (amar) and remains ever young. It is the body which is perishable and dies at the old age. The Hindu scripture also tells the same story. When a person dies, the Urvan is freed from the body and the body remains

to be disposed off in different manners depending on the beliefs.Rustomji F. Daruwala.

It’s the time of the year when all the Navjotes and Weddings start taking

place or are right round the corner.

Here are some tips on how to prep your daughters or sons hair before their Navjote.1) Firstly, you need to choose a look that you prefer to work with- short, medium or long length of hair.2) Then you need to book in a trim for their hair around a fortnight before the ceremony so the ends look healthy and not dry. Make sure you specify to your stylist what’s

the look that you want to achieve. Picture reference always helps.3) Then comes the home treatment to maintain softness and shine. Now the best thing to do to maintain softness and shine is just 3 days before the ceremony apply a strong conditioner on the hair generously and put a shower cap over it so it traps the heat inside the cap. If oil suits you then apply it on your scalp not your hair and massage slowly.4) A slow massage stimulates the scalp and inturn makes the hair shiny and cuts frizz if any.5) Girls and boys who are getting married the best thing to do is stay of heated styling like driers & irons and strong gels that can cause harm for a couple of weeks before the wedding this will give the hair an all new shine all together when you use it on your function day.6) Apply a strong conditioner once in a week and leave it on for atleast 5 minutes so the hair starts to feel and look

considerably better.7) Trim your hair 15 days before your functions start.8) Applying a shine colour to the hair just to induce some shine which is temporary is also a great option. It’s a clear colour that contains no colour just shine. And also has no ammonia so is temporary and washes out of the hair in 2-3 months.

Dear Mamaiji,

You always make me read the Gujarati calendar date from the front page of the Parsi Times. Today is Zamyad Roj. What does that mean?

Dear Dikri,

Today is Zamyad Roj. The day dedicated to the Angel, the Divinity, the Yazata who presides over the Earth. The Earth is not just a physical planet but a living organism in every way, including in Spirit. Many cultures refer to her as Mother Earth. Dedicate yourself this day to take care of her. Connect with the Earth by simply expressing love and gratitude to Her for all that She has been providing since aeons. Ground yourself. Take a pledge not to defile, corrupt, pollute, spoil the Earth. Also, thus, strengthen your bonds with your own human mother. Cherish her with unconditional love. Isn’t it interesting that the day preceding this one, Aasman, stands for (Father) Sky? Thus, we see the subtle indication of the Male Female, Yin Yang Principles that pervade the Universe. Salutations and Love to Zamyad Yezad, Dharti Mata. Love You.
