At the Monfort College of Business, we know our students spend an enormous amount of time and energy studying, taking exams, working on projects, participating in student clubs and preparing for life after college. The faculty and staff applaud your efforts and congratulate our 2012 graduates. May you go on to have stellar careers!

www.facebook.com/MCBAlumniandFriends

To us, you’ll always deserve the star treatment.

COLLEGE of BUSINESS

Dear Graduates,

Congratulations on earning your degrees from UNC this fall. Your degree servesas validation of your hard work, dedication and, in a way, is a contract with yourselfthat indicates your commitment to lifelong learning.

Before you walk up to the stage, I’d like to ask you to participate in an exercise. Notanother test, I promise. I’d like you to think back on your first semester here. Whatdid you take away from those 16 weeks?

As I reflected this fall on 10 years serving as UNC president, the answer tothat question for me was reinforced inside pages of scrapbooks my mother hadmade for me.

School memories and achievements, from childhood to college, were tuckedinside those three scrapbooks, which included the requisite report cards, newspaperarticles and programs from awards assemblies.

What particularly struck me about my foray into college wasn’t the grades — infact, I wasn’t all that thrilled with those first-semester results — but the discovery ofwhat we talk about here as transformative education.

It was a true education — an education in the positive and liberating sense —when I gave myself permission to figure out the things that were going to matter mostin the long run. My education continues to this day at this exemplary teaching andlearning community.

As you start the next chapter of your life, I wish you continued success on yourjourney as a lifelong learner.

Commencement represents a milestone on that path. It’s a real treat to celebratewith you the feather in your cap — that tassel on your mortarboard, as it were — thatmarks your transition from student to graduate.

You’ve certainly made a wise investment in advancing your education at UNC.What you’ve learned here, the friendships you’ve made, the faculty who know yourname, the opportunities to learn inside and outside the classroom combine to forman experience unique to you.

Know that the university is still, and always will be, here for you. By graduating, you’re a member of the Alumni Association, which offers a range of benefits andactivities to keep you connected.

Once again, congratulations.

Sincerely,Kay Norton

Grounded by the rootsof her experience at UNC,Emily Dake, a senior arteducation major plans tofoster her voice by develop-ing personal narratives instudent art.

The Lee Summit, Mo.,student began her collegecareer on the Universityof Northern Coloradocampus in the fall of 2008,and she concludes it thisweek as she strides acrossthe stage to receive herdiploma.

Originally a graphicdesign major, Dakeenjoyed how using thecomputer as a creativemedium allowed one to seea range of possibilitiesbefore choosing one.

“When painting, there isno improving,” Dake said.“At least not as fast. I guessI like the speed of (comput-ers), and I like typography.”

An artistic twist thatpays special attention tothe creation and arrange-ment of fonts and lettering, typography is a key factorin the design of logos andposters that can create, manipulate and deflate aseries of aestheticattempts. Invested in theways that words can bemade visually pleasing, onemight say that Dake’s per-sonal narrative as a fresh-man whom came into herown, also replicates herteaching philosophy andartistic interest.

A lonely freshman uponarrival, Dake quickly begangetting involved in thecampus community by

playing clarinet in the UNC“Pride of the Rockies”marching band andbecame a leader in YoungLife, a non-denominationalhigh school mission pro-gram that’s dedicated toteaching kids about Christ.

“(Young Life has)changed my life in a way Inever expected when I gothere because I was a fresh-man and became a leader, but today I can’t imaginethat not being a part of mylife,” she said. “Just meet-ing all of those peoplechanges you.”

Dake knew she wantedto switch her major fromgraphic design to art edu-cation after she came backfrom her summer experi-

ence as a coach for a sum-mer league swim team inMissouri.

“I realized that I lovedhanging out with (the girlson the team), and I realizedthat I wanted to be in thatkind of setting the rest ofmy life,” Dake said. “I stilllove graphic design, and I

still want to do it, but I alsoknow that I am supposed towork with kids. Art educa-tion is K-12, but surprising-ly I want to do middleschool, and I think that isbecause I was a middleschool leader in Young Life, but I think I could go any-where and be happy.”

Coming into her own asa leader, and recognizingwhere she would like todraw her focus and skills,Dake’s college journeyillustrates a student whowas courageous enough torecognize that she had topursue what type of workwould be truly satisfactory

on an everyday basis, which shines through inDake’s desire to facilitatestudents by providing themwith a outlet to share theirpersonal stories.

Believing that this typeof pedagogical approachcreates more ownership fortheir art, Dake wants stu-dents to have the freedomto make those choices thathelp them have an opinionthat they, as a person, canstate what they feel, and itis OK, even appreciated, when those opinions arenot all the same.

Next year, Dake plansto substitute teach inthe Windsor, Lovelandand the Greeley schooldistricts.

Five years is the maxi-mum number of years onecan participate as a playerin the continuous cycle ofcollegiate sports.

When an impact playergraduates, it takes only oneplayer to stand up and takeon that role.

The University ofNorthern Colorado hadsenior wide receiverDominic Gunn as an electri-fying player on specialteams and on the receivingcorps during the year, andas Gunn graduates with hisdegree in business manage-ment, someone will have tostep up. For now, however,Gunn has pro day on hismind and NFL dreams he islooking to achieve.

“That’s something I’mstriving for,” Gunn said.“I’m going to continue toworking at that. That’s defi-nitely my goal.”

Gunn is not the firstBear to try his hands at theNFL. Last season’s starwide receiver, PatrickWalker, was one of them, but Gunn’s biggeststrength has been seen onspecial teams.

“We had a big hole miss-ing with Pat Walker gradu-ating,” UNC head coachEarnest Collins Jr. “Pat was(quarterback Seth Lobato’s)security blanket. With Patnot here, somebody had tostep up and be that guy, andwe challenged Dom. It wasthe third or fourth game ofthe year and we said,‘You’ve got to step up andmake plays for us.’ And he

did that, and he didn’t justdo it in the role of widereceiver. He stepped upwith everything.”

Stepping up has led toGunn being recentlynamed to The SportsNetwork All-AmericanFirst-Team and theAssociated Press Second-Team All-American.

Gunn had a stellar yearon the field, totaling 1,563all-purpose yards, aDivision I school record fora single season and thesixth-most single seasontotal in UNC history. Gunnalso scored nine touch-downs during the season, six receiving, two puntreturns and one kick return.

“It just goes down to thedetermination of the individ-ual,” Collins said. “When youget awards like that, it’s just atestament to the hard workthat he put into this season. It’s a testament to the mentalattitude, mental focus thathe put into this season.”

Offensive coordinatorJon Boyer said more thanjust Gunn’s physical abilitywill be key to having anedge over the others lookingto fulfill pro-ball ambitions.

“That’s something he’sgoing to continue to growon and to understand that itmay be one rep, and if hedoes take that off he’s notgoing to have that opportu-nity, and I think that’swhere he’s going to gainsome advantages on theother guys that he’ll becompeting with for rosterspots,” Boyer said. “I thinkhe’s aware of that, and heknows that his advantage isgoing to be not just the

physical piece of it, but he’sgot to win in the meetingrooms as well.”

The UNC football teamhas grown in Gunn’s timeon the team, culminatingin a 5-6 record this season— the program’s best wintotal since 2005 when ithad four wins — and Gunnhas been a contributingfactor to the progressionthe program has seen.

“I think I’ve had a bigrole in it,” Gunn said. “Justmaking plays, just beingthere when the time’s right. As we know, I’m a specialteams guy, and I sparked afew plays and sparked a fewdrives and keep the guysgoing, keep them motivated.I’ve been a big part and I’vealways played my role, always being positive andkeep the guys going.”

Gunn looks to pro day in post-grad plan
