Dealing with Demons We hear in this weekend’s Gospel that Jesus has no problem in nuking the faulty logic of the scribes “by the prince of demons, he drives out demons”. But he does say something interesting afterwards. He says, “But no one can enter a strong man’s house to plunder his property unless he first ties up the strong man.” What

Jesus is saying is that even though the house of Satan, may be strong, his defense can be breached by tying him up. Jesus has done just that.

Jesus accepts life as a struggle between the power of evil and the power of God. He did not waste time speculating about problems no one can answer. He did not argue about where evil came from. But he dealt with it effectively. We spend too much time on why there is evil in the world and not enough time working on ways to tackle it. Suppose we wake up and find that the house is on fire. We do not sit, read, and speculate on what causes house fires. We grab what we can in order to deal with the fire. Jesus sees the essential struggle between good and evil, and dealt with it, and gives us the power to deal with it.

The defeat of demons did not show that Jesus was in alliance with Satan. In defeating demons, Jesus showed that he desired to save bodies as well as souls. There are several evils in the world that invade both body and soul. Let us be mindful to not wring our hands about it, but to do what we can to defeat it.—TB

Kinship Then we hear in this Gospel asking “Who are my mother and my brothers?” I truly love my mother and my brothers and sisters. They would never intentionally do anything to get in my way in following what I believe God is calling me to do or be. But if that ever happened, I would have to make a decision on who my mother and brothers and sisters are.

When it comes to doing the will of God, what is true kinship? I realize that bloodlines may have a role in it, but Jesus seems to intimate that there is more to it than that.

People can show true kinship when they share a profound common experience, and that experience bonds them together. Even though I have not seen most of them in over 30 years, I still feel a certain bond with the people I served in the Army with. I certainly feel a certain bond with the men I was ordained with more than most other priests.

I think true kinship also shown common interests. People bond that way because they can relate to each other on a different level. My dad had the same guys he played golf with, and that is the way they connected.

True kinship can be found in our leadership. There is a kinship among coworkers on the job working for the same boss. There is a kinship among players on a team following the coach’s game plan.

True kinship can also be had with a common goal. I think what binds us together as Americans is when there is a crisis to be solved or when we are called to support our troops.

As Christians, we have true kinship. We share a common experience from our baptism, show our common interest by sharing in this meal, we all are disciples of Jesus Christ, and our goal is to bring about the glory of God. Who are my mother and brother and sister? At this moment, it is the people I serve.—TB

We have been blessed with a pledge of $25,000 from the Catholic Schools Center of Excellence (CSCOE). However, in order to receive these funds, we need to raise our own $25,000. Please consider a donation. More information can be found on the school website at sjb-school.org. Checks can be sent to St. John’s School at PO Box 50, Vermillion, MN 55085. Thank-you for considering a donation. Please also consider visiting the school. We’d love to show what we’re doing to build on the excellence that you established in each of our parish schools.

Celebrating our Catholic Marriages and Families

Father’s Day is an important time to celebrate and promote the role of fatherhood within the Christian family. Fathers, by their word and example, pass on the faith and reflect the image of God the Father within their homes. Christian marriages reflect the relationship between Christ and the Church and have the Holy Family as their primary model. As devoted Catholics, members of the Knights of Columbus nourish, support and strengthen Catholic family life through parish-based programs and charitable works. Next Sunday, our parish’s Knights of Columbus council invites each couple present to affirm their wedding vows. We hope that by doing so you and your spouse will again experience the grace received on your wedding day, when you gave witness to the union of Christ and the Church. We pray that your marriage continues to be strengthened through the example of the Holy Family and the love that comes from Christ.

The "Giving Tree" is up in the main entrance for items we need over the summer for the Lock In, VBS and Totus Tuus. Please look over the tree, take a tag for something you can donate and check back often- it will be replenished. Give where you can! Thanks for supporting our youth programs!

The youth Lock In is Friday, June 15! Starts at St. Pius V and then we travel to Camp Victory in in Zumbro Falls and then back to St. Pius V. Registration forms can be downloaded on our website under the Catholic Formation tab or can be picked up at the entrances.

Three Rivers Community Action is in need of Volunteer Drivers for our Home Delivered Meals program. Contact Home Delivered Meals Volunteer Coordinator Nicole Pelzl at 507-732-8588. See posted flyer for more information.

We have received “FREE” publications this week for the month of June. Please take one home for daily scripture and reflections.
