Dear Delegates,

The objective of the SEMSEP programme is to provide additional educational opportunities in the new specialty of Sports and Exercise Medicine to our Fellows and Members, but also to medical practitioners and other allied healthcare professionals who are interested to learn more about Sports and Exercise Medicine.

The modules are delivered during the academic year, and address a number of topics. Our first 3 modules (Anti-Doping & Pharmacology in November 2013, Concussion in February 2014 & Disability in Sports & Physical Activity for Health in March 2014) were well attended, and we hope that today’s module, will be as popular!

On behalf of the Faculty Board, I would like to welcome you to RCSI this morning for the SEMSEP Module 4 on “The Mountain Environment & Mountain Rescue”.

As beautiful and enticing as our mountains are in good weather, it only takes low cloud to change a lovely walk into a different and dangerous environment.

All our speakers today are members of the mountain rescue teams in Ireland & Scotland, where weather is more extreme and rescues therefore more challenging. These are very skilled people who put their own lives at risk doing what they do.

Please note that additional CPD activities will come out from the SEMSEP modules next year, and we hope to advertise them in the Autumn, together with our new SEMSEP schedule for the academic year 2014 / 2015. We look forward to the various modules being delivered by our team of SEM experts and guest speakers, and we value your feedback after each module.
