GREEN MAN DAY BEGINSUp with the lark are the committee and their helpers to set up PiltonStreet, Rotary Gardens and the stages. Bins to put out, marquees to erect,participants to be directed to their positions for the day.

Bacon butties and a cup of tea wouldn’t go amiss!

THE PROCESSIONThe procession begins at Barnstaple Square at 11.00am and makes its wayalong the High Street and Pilton Causeway to arrive at the bottom of PiltonStreet by 11.30am. Processing up the street and turning into Pilton Housegrounds. Look out for the large Green and Red Masks leading the way.

THE PAGEANT(Rotary Gardens 12 noon and 3pm)

The Green Man is an ancient Pagan symbol of nature and fertilityfrequently depicted in carvings in old churches as a face sproutingfoliage. A splendid green man carving can be seen in St Mary the VirginChurch in Pilton.

The Prior of the Benedictine Priory of Pilton lived in at The Bull Housebelow the church until the reformation. The ritual enacted at Green ManDay is believed to represent the initial antagonism of the two characters,Prior and Green Man, represented by Red and Green masks and thesubsequent inclusion of the Pagan figure within the church. Under thedirection of Bev Neighbour and Pip Cartmell, it takes place in the arena atthe top of Rotary Gardens.

Pilton & Green Man Day

Pilton is a self-contained community within Barnstaple which enjoys a uniquevillage atmosphere. The celebration is in the tradition of the legendary chartergranted by Edward III in 1344 for a market and fair in Pilton and today itcontinues to provide a great spectacle of fun, festivities and feasting for peopleof all ages. It also serves as a valuable platform for local charities to raiseawareness and funds.

The day could not take place without the skill and dedication of a hardworkingCommittee. This band of unpaid volunteers gives its time for all our enjoyment.

The event is non-profit making and we are eternally grateful to the generosity ofeveryone who has sponsored and supported the committees fundraising.

Please support our advertisers throughout the coming year as without them wecould not produce this programme or put on the day in Pilton for you.

Central to Green Man Day is PiltonStreet, with the hustle and bustleamongst the stalls, the arrival ofthe procession and a day of musicfrom the three stages.

In recent years, festivities haveexpanded into the comfort ofRotary Gardens, a splendid settingfor family-based activities withchildren’s soft-play and free-playareas and a hand-crankedVictorian merry-go-round.

Dotted amongst the trees,arts and craftsmen willdemonstrate their skills andlocal interest groups andcharities will ‘set out theirstalls’. The hugelyentertaining Wyvern Taleswill be performing

throughout the day with story-telling and interactive workshops.Look out for Matt Lemon with his juggling, yoyos and balloon art.You might chance upon DJ Magician pedalling around on hisunicycle. As if that’s not enough for a cracking day out, Uncle Tacko isreturning with his amazing flea circus and Dave Hendy will performhis Punch & Judy at 2.00pm and 3.30pm

Should you wish to simply chill out,just pick your spot, and stretch out.You might even want to bring apicnic along, or if Mum or Dad want abreak, there’s a huge range of streetfood outlets, Monty’s CaribbeanKitchen, Seasonal Samosas, Lola’swings, Andrew Gratton’s locallysourced Hog Roast and many more.Don’t forget the Pimms tent.

On a more practical level, along theNorth Road side of the gardens willbe the portaloos, a facility not to besniffed at.

STAGES 2017Pilton Green Man Day has evolved over the years, and we have been luckyto have some amazing bands to entertain the crowds. This year we haveagain sourced our acts for the bottom (main) stage from the musicalsupport we enjoy locally. It gives us a chance to showcase some of ourrich local talent, whilst giving the performers an opportunity to play intheir own community. There will also be some local buskers playingthroughout the day in Rotary Gardens.
